The problem of this new Dragonlance is the fact that it's official WotC material, that meaning it's mediocre at best, this might be the best official module yet but you are better off on adapting something from the Dragon lance module from older versions or something from the OSR scene, our group is really good on making good stuff so I prefer to having them write their own stuff instead but if I have to chose a module one thing is certain: nothing from WotC (d&d stuff from before the acquisition is good tho)

Coming in over a year later, as I'm prepping Shadows of the Dragon Queen and wanted some more ideas: this is basically how I view all the pre-written campaigns. I used to HATE the idea, and refused to do it. A few years ago, during a depression and ADHD meltdown, my partner convinced me to run Curse of Strahd. I was really taken in by the quality, even as I immediately added a lot and then took other fan made stuff to add which really enriched the game. Having now read Light of Xaryxis (sorry my friend, Spelljammer was rushed but it was still good), TUrn of Fortune's Wheel, Shattered Obelisk, Rime of the Frostmaiden, Shadows of the Dragon Queen, and bits of others, I see exactly where I would add my own things. They did the grunt work and some of it is beautifully done, though some (definitely the early 5e stuff) isn't.

I like the new format. And I agree, books that give you tools to tell your own story, add your own details, give the player-characters agency, is ultimately a superior RPG product!

Dragonlance is better than Forgotten Realms just by virtue of not being a bland, one size fits all scenario with no dicernable theme and aesthetic.
@yellowbeard12 жыл бұрын
I use the area as a place to put in adventures that can stick to certain themes with those themes being dependent on what themes the players want. Right now it’s domain management and an anti-slavery crusade while introducing more gunpowder weapons to the setting. I don’t know if this is a strength of the setting or because my players are interested in interesting things
@VengefulJarl2 жыл бұрын
I like both. But I don't see how you can sat that when thusbis literally the what 3rd or 4th (5th?) Edition telling of the same war.
@shamanspointofview80832 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t say it doesn’t have a theme, but I can’t disagree with the sentiment of it being a one size fits all for different settings, but to me that’s a part of it being the forgotten realms. For instance, waterdeep is built upon a city, that was built upon a city and so on and so forth, but he settings on it he surface aren’t as much settings as different realms of culture and types of fantasy, but what makes Toril o e of the best settings, is here are always while areas forgotten to the history of toril which are built upon older cities which now have active cities running upon the ruins of the forgotten realms of old.
@avengingblowfish96532 жыл бұрын
I think FR’s generic aesthetic is good as a “default” setting since most one-shot adventure modules will fit well into it. It’s a super convenient setting for DMs like me who wants a published setting where they can concentrate on story building without worrying about lore conflicts since none of the FR lore is critical to the setting.
@dlewdm2 жыл бұрын
FR is anything but a generic setting. I can see you thinking that if you have only seen the 5e supplements - but it is a large well storied entire world. The histories of the different places are what makes it great. Dragonlance has always been my favorite setting though - I love the theme, the despair and struggle against an overwhelming force. A never ending tide of draconians followed by undead armies led of the one and only Lord Soth! Such a badass villian

We are on a similar path as DMs for this. My Dragonlance campaign starts on Sunday (I preordered and have the advance copy on DNDBeyond). A barbarian, rogue, cleric, two sorcerers, and one undeclared... we'll be sidelining to actually do the tests of high sorcery, I'll keep their milestones for convenience but we're already announcing the "go ahead and do what you find interesting" thing and if they wander away from those milestones I'll make up some more, and we fully plan to move on past dealing with the initial invasion of Kalaman then move on to find a way to participate in the summit and then influence Krynn in new and unique ways. I'm a lot more satisfied with 5E Dragonlance than I was with Spelljammer, but I think more because they set expectations properly. I was very much under the impression that Spelljammer was going to be a full campaign world and not just.... well, what we got. With Dragonlance I went in expecting a "Dragonlance story campaign" and a board game tie in and didn't even have a whiff of "This is going to be a deeply developed version of Krynn to run a home game of Dragonlance".

Between WotC’s release patterns for 5E, us already having the release roadmap for 2023, and OneD&D coming in 2024, I don’t think we will receive follow up books for Dragonlance but rather will leave it up to the DMsGuild community to expand on the setting. Thankfully DMSGuild has some talented creators, some of which have written official material before.

I use dnd official adventures as a framework that I heavily modify based on my player's backstories so I change and add Chapters, locations, NPCs so that the players feel that their PC's are actually part of the world and of the story. This is why I am usually ok with an adventure that is not very well written because I will change it anyway and I believe sometimes these adventures by WotC are loosely written in order to stimulate the DM to invent and continue the story and not just run it as is ( at least I hope so since many many times you can see that the authors could have easily done a better job) but still sometimes...sometimes you just want a specific mechanic to be written thoroughly so you don't have to think of your own or change it you just need it to work. I guess this is a mix of both but compared to older edition it seems better based on Guy's review which I found very very useful as I now know what I will find in the book. Thanks again!

Possible solution to the akward hook to bring everyone together for the funeral. Have everyone create their characters and then run mini session zero's with everyone individually and then include this character somehow. Maybe a family member or friend, maybe a mentor, maybe someone who took interest in something they were doing as a child and working on and complimented on it and stops in town time to time to check in on them so on and so forth. This would add a bit more weight to this for the players, but don't tell them it starts with a funeral until the very first session so it will still be a bit of a shock, as news of death all to often is.
@ItsJustN82 жыл бұрын
So glad this book is better than Spelljammer from your perspective. I'd really love to see your take on what other side adventures you think would be interesting and where in the book. I always struggle with that kind of thing. The only time I've felt comfortable doing it is in BGDIA because the players just have this big unlimited fluid sandbox so anything can kinda be anywhere and I just threw so much fun homebrew sidetracking and story point thread connecting into it with no issue.
@TheCJJeep2 жыл бұрын
I'll get the book. Storm King's Thunder had a great section fleshing out the Forgotten Realms' "Savage North". There were adventure hooks and NPC basics to cannibalise for one shots or a mini campaign, tho' it was a well built adventure in all. If you haven't, give it a read. Your video sounds like Dragonlance has similar content. Add in a chance to play a role in the War of the Lance, even if it is a tangental?
@HowtobeaGreatGM2 жыл бұрын
I can see the PCs being critical the war efforts eclipsing anyone else. Or was the war of the lance the first war that banished Takhesis. In which case - nope. It's a paragraph or two mention. But the book is set AC - after the cataclysm of Istar.

How I would fix the problem with the funeral of someone important to players: I would run a session prequel without they know that is a prequel, in which the players have a quick action invading a hideout and have a super tought fight, with lot of roleplaying and the npc being super likeable and engaging all players. After that fight, I would pass a 6 months when they heard about the death. We would have some background to roleplay, maybe friends, lovers, family and start the game right on action with some crazy location and enemies like a episode of suicide squad or band of brothers.

I like the sound of this dragonlance book! I do like having another character there. Near the beginning middleish area, there were points where some explaining of stuff was happening and I wasn't sure who was talking (while my eyes were elsewhere) without looking back at the screen. Towards the end I feel like the parts solidified a bit more and it was good.

As someone that likes to take what is interesting and modify it this sounds perfect, sadly I'd love that they'd have introduced the war aspect inside 5e instead of having to play another boardgame. I'm DMing a campaing around lvl 14 and like to introduce a big war as finishing arc, I asked my players the thought of playing a boardgame for the war aspect and everyone said that it would not be optimal to break the game to play another one.
