Dragons Dogma Review. In this review I hope to make a case for a game with flaws but so much to love. Is Dragon's Dogma worth playing in 2023? Is Dragons Dogma worth it? Hell Yes. This review is based on my time with Dragons Dogma Dark Arisen. I missed the game completely until 2023!
Dragons Dogma Dark Arisen is available on PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS3, Xbox One and Xbox 360. You'll also be able to play if you have the PS5 or XBox X/S.
If you would like to pick up a discounted version of the game for PC (Steam key) and support the channel, there is a link below.

There is a POLL active in the description to let you vote on which game I cover next - votes are open. If you want to buy the game on Steam, check the link in the description - you may be able to get it cheaper from here vs. Steam directly (prices change, so no promises, but worth checking)

You can pick any class and switch at any time in either Gran Soren at the inn or in BBI with the lady that brought you there. When you level you stat will go up according to what class you are playing at the time and those stats will stay with you. You can also use equipment and augments to boost stats.

There is a page you can use to help plan stats. I cannot remember all but... Fighters and warrior gain most health and physical def. For strength assassin but little def For magic and magic def. sorcerer then mage Magic archer and mystic knight have mix magic def stamina health For stamina I think it’s ranger then strider. For those who want pure strength go fighter first 10 lvls then assassin rest of way Pure magic mage first 10 then sorcerer It all depends on how you want to play

There is something about the atmosphere of this game. The darkness, the physical things such as having to use a lantern after nightfall or getting more shock dmg if soaked, the wizards and warriors casting a skill for almost 30 seconds... it just feels very real and old school. One of my all time favorites if not the favorite RPG. I hope we do get a DD2.

You will need to play through the story multiple times to get all gear though so u can rush through the first time and set up portcrystals in specific locations to make your second playthrough much more convenient for fast travel. Ive perfected this strategy lol. I know how to skip complete questlines by just going to the right place that instantly completes the quest. Basically you only need to do like 10 quests overall to beat the vanilla game. Just choose the right ones lol.

They had the choice to make a sequel or DMC5 and they knew DMC5 would make more money, DD was a huge passion project for the team. But the suits would obviously be happier with higher sales than an amazing passion project. If we got a sequel, I'd imagine it's already in a planning phase now that it (DD1) is finally getting more recognition. I really hope it does get a sequel. This is coming from someone who mostly plays movement shooters like Titanfall 2, Apex Legends, and occasionally Dark Souls which is I'd assume why I was drawn to this game.

I agree, this is a great game. It's not your typical Dragon Age styled, so there's very little hand holding like you've mentioned. What I found great about this title is that it conveys very well the feeling of adventure when travelling from place to place. Capcom did a great job on this one. Well no, it's nothing like Dragon Age. Dragon age (origins) is a story and role playing driven game developed for consoles by industry leading veterans of computer role playing games Bioware. A lot of things were lost in translation and quite rough as they attempted to transition onto consoles and appeal to console gamers with Dragon Age origins. Dragons Dogma is an action focused open world game made by Capcom who are heavily experienced in making fighting games and brawlers but who've no experience at all in making role playing games. Capcom's inexperience in making role playing games shows. I agree with you on the experience of adventure.

The feeling of adventure definitely! Just yesterday I was fighting a cyclops on a cliff and my pawn fell off. I jumped down to rescue her and right into a chimera. And all that simply on our way to a quest. The variety of monsters really keeps the game fun even after 200 hours of playing

I think it is the focus on detail, as well as the fact this detail is just hidden in the game, so ot feels great when you doscover it. Things like fat characters exhausting flying enemies quicker, skeletons being very weak to explosions, pawns being able to mimic and learn tactics against specific beasts, and the game making the NPC you interact with the most get kidnapped by the dragon. It all makes so much sense, yet you rarely see it in video games, so when you notice these things it immerses you in the game that much more.

@@boianko What I'm about to say may seem like I'm disagreeing with you, but I do believe the 'Beloved' system is great... almost. The 'Arisen's Bond' ring should always lock the chosen NPC into becoming your beloved no matter what, but Grigori (or The Dragon if you prefer) somehow manages too steal this ring from my beloved Fournival Frescobaldi, and then proceeds to kidnap the last person I talked too, Caxton... @@-Nihilus- 'When all the classes are unique' So combat which for Dragons Dogma means action. Which leads back to Dragons Dogma being a good action game. For the record though, Dragons Dogma doesn't even close to compare to other role playing games in build diversity, control or depth, just compare it to Pathfinder Wrath of the righteous which is currently in beta. Obviously the comparison is even less favourable comparing Dragon's Dogma to hack'n slash games and MMOs which are games completely focused on builds and combat rather than role playing like Path of exile. Dragons Dogma being a bit of a middle ground between console action brawler(devil may cry(, hack'n slash(Diablo, borderlands) and Role playing game(Baldur's gate). Leaning especially towards hack'n slash and brawler. But no, Dragons Dogma doesn't really stand out for it's progression and character builds system. This is a very good review! One complaint that lots of new players make (including me) are the unexpectedly strong enemies along the way to some quests. But if you listen to your pawns, they always tell you to retreat and that's what you need to do if underpowered: simply run past all the monsters. I've played this game for about 250 hours already, and still haven't discovered a half of what it has to offer. The real issue is the lack of vocations balance when it comes to stats, especially Warrior and Mage are underpowered.

You failed to mention that pawns actually learn from your behaviour. If you actually have the same vocation as your pawn, and outfit them with the same skills, they will observe how you play and repeat your actions. That’s the best way to “teach” pawns, but they can still learn more basic actions even in a differing vocation. For example, they’ll catch you if you fall from a great height, Jump over sweeping attacks (like death’s instant-kill scythe) if they see you do it, etc.

At least it exists, so few of the d&d style games come out because companies don't want to do the work they require, skyrims been out for over 10 years and not one company has tried to follow its success, imagine if elder scrolls had competition, it'd be great.

I came to fallout 4 way too late as well but unlike you, I abandoned it after about 15 hours as I just couldn't get into it, the game didn't resonate with me at all. I have dragons dogma sitting waiting for me to play it along with a few other giant rpgs, I'm deciding which to play next and I think dd is the one so hopefully this will be enjoyable.

There are two things you missed that only adds to the depth of Dragon’s Dogma. 1. During character customization, your height and weight have an impact on gameplay. Short and thin means youre faster, lower sprinting stamina consumption, but you cant carry as much. 2. your build can drastically affect your game, If you play ten levels into mage and the rest of the levels into sorcerer, you will have a max Magick built, things like that

I love Dragons Dogma and I cannot wait for the sequel. I think the reasons why it wasn't as successful as it should've been is because at the time when the game first launched it wasn't the prettiest game to look at graphically and the audio syncing was off when speaking with npc's. Also I believe people were turned off because the game didn't have a traditional co-op system outside of borrowing other players pawns. But none of that bothered me and I spent a ridiculous amount of time playing the Dark Arisen expansion.

I've finished the game dozens of times and disagree with everything you've said. I completely understand why the game turned people off. IT DOES NOT START STRONG and while there's a lot of game elements we all learn to overlook or enjoy, it's SUPER ROUGH when you start up. Presentation, story and characters are quite poor as well. It did itself a disservice marketing itself as an RPG because there's expectations that come attached to that label both from fans of JRPGs and WRPGs and Dragon's Dogma fails to satisfy either. 'Skyrim is overrated gameplay wise'. If all Skyrim did was 'combat' I would agree with you, but Skyrim isn't quite as limited and focused as Dragons Dogma is.

Most cinematic moment I ever had in ANY game was playing magic archer and using those arrows. I was trekking through the wilderness at night when my lantern ran out of oil -- then I got surrounded by undead. I kept firing my holy arrows to kill the undead also light my way. Using those explosions of light, we managed to find our way back to Gran Soren, emerging from the forest just as dawn broke -- only to be attacked by bandits. It was awesome -- just like a movie, and totally unscripted. This game is brilliant.

Bruh, I just started yesterday and the bandits on the way to Witchwood forest were traumatizing. 😆 I've been mad hooked to this game that it's reawoken my night owl self. 😅 I don't know if it was a glitch but there was this one bandit that was so strong that he could 1v4 my party like it was nothing. Sometimes, though, he would not show up or something and I finally got through to my destination. lol I just finished the first(?) Everfall investigation and that was also traumatizing. lool Good luck to me and my future quests, haha.

I think there's no one who's played the game and did not get his ass handed to him by that bandit with the horned helmet. 😆 He's there everytime but you can run past him, if you're quick enough. The great thing about this game is that you gain experience and additional powers so naturally that you don't even notice how strong you became. At some point you will likely return to Witchwood Forest and once again meet this clown and his friends. But then you will just casually headshot this guy with your bow skills or one-hit him with a claymore and it will make you feel like the biggest badass in all of Gran Soren! Fantastic game, can't wait for DD2! 👍

Oh, the systems regarding the pawns go INTRICATELY deep if you're willing to take the time to learn about them. For example, your pawn learns how to behave by watching you. Tend to pick up every item you see along the way, even while a battle is raging? Your pawn will start to do it too, and become almost an auto-loot mechanic for you. Do you tend to focus down archers and mages instead of the melee characters? Your pawn will begin to catch on and start prioritizing long-range enemies. Do you tend to switch targets mid-fight to protect a pawn that might have gotten knocked down or stunned? Your pawn will start coming to your rescue when the same happens to you. You can even have them fight enemies alone, and they'll learn how to take that enemy down better with their current skill-set. There are other ways to teach your pawn and change their behaviors as well, such as items and a "knowledge chair" which basically gives you a set of choices each time you sit down with them that can help shape the pawn to your liking. How you customize your pawn matters too. Smaller pawns have less carry weight and can get knocked around easier, but they're far more nimble and agile than larger characters. Fatter pawns move slower. The length of your pawns arm dictates their reach. Same for your main character, actually. But how you design your character's minute features such as how long their legs are, can determine if they are constantly struggling to keep up with you or if they're outrunning you everywhere. When your pawn gets hired by a different player, and then sent back to you, that pawn will have learned new information regarding the enemies, locations, and quests that they helped with when they come back to you. Their inclination (their behavior) is tied only to you though, so other players cannot change how your pawn acts. So it's important to become a teacher for your pawn, because that's how they'll behave in their world. This only scratches the surface. One of my favorite DDDA youtubers has a lot of info on the pawns if you want to deep dive into the system. The channel name is Nihil0.0 A quick link to a quick rundown of some of the lesser known mechanics regarding pawns from that channel: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f4DYp6Rji9Gbf7s I could gush more over this game, but I think I'll go fire it up on Steam instead. Have fun!
