And in his first generation (PS1 games) he was still a likable character who was setting out to save his kind. Second argument: Most dragons in Fairy Tail offered their power to some humans in order to help put an end to a Dragon Civil War over sharing the world with humans or just eating them all.

But out of 3 separate episodes (Owl's Well, Secret of my Excess, and this one) where dragons are portrayed, they were all seen very protective of the riches they had, and like you said, the teens in Dragon's Quest were jerks like dragon's have been portrayed. Spike isn't a jerk. So I agree with you better than this review. I watched Secret of my Excess and Dragon Quest. Dragon Quest proved only a group of dragons are jerks. There can be some good dragons like Spike. While they may grow from greed, greed is not the same as being a jerk. Rarity loves diamonds but she's not a jerk. Mr. Krabs from Spongebob isn't a jerk, but he's very greedy. So the dragon can live on greed without being a jerk. And Fluttershy has The Stare which she once used on a Cockatrice while getting Petrified.

Pinkie grew up on a Rock farm... that rockslide just reminded her of home.. Not enough is really known about dragons... FS does this.... it's effective partly because she's usually so meek, unconfrontational etc. and what ever, the dragon has mother too, I guess... Dragon Greed is one way dragons grow. Not necessarily the only one... Maybe some Dragon Lord had ordered to pay heed to FS or something... because he was scared of Angel Bunny? or how Fluttershy-Angel dynamics really works. The things Angel does, well, often Angel decides FS needs to face some fear to overcome it and acts up to motivate her. Like ridiculously detailed salad... either stand up to Angel or stand up to shopkeepers/other customers to get the ingredients!

TO be honest, this is the episode that got me back into the series. After terrible episodes like "Griffon the Brush Off" and "Boast Busters" this episode made me continue to watch the show. It's not the episode that made me a brony that goes to Lesson Zero my favorite episode, but it is the reason why I watched the rest of the show and here I am. So I owe this episode for keeping me in this community and it's in my top ten favorite episodes for that reason and that it's a great episode. Thanks Megan McCarthy and DHX, I owe you for keeping me in this fandom and I will continue to watch MLP :)

One other thing you forgot to mention is that Fluttershy didn't open up to Twilight when they first met until she saw Spike, she was outright attracted to him (but not in a creepy way) and was well aware he was a baby dragon. We were given no indication whatsoever that she was scared of dragons, some people could even read that scene as especially liking him because he was a dragon if later episodes hadn't stated otherwise. Seriously, her being scared of dragons just sort of came out of nowhere this episode. Something else I noticed that no one else seems to mention is what was up with the treasure? That dragon wasn't a problem in previous episodes, so we can probably assume the dragon had only recently arrived. However, we saw the dragon had a sizable horde of gold in that cave. Was that the dragon's personal horde that he carries around with him? Was that horde already there and he just happened upon it? Did he only recently collect it? If the former-most, how does he carry it all with him when he flies (he didn't seem to have it when we saw him departing). If the latter-most, where did it come from? Are there a lot of bugled ponies we never hear about? For that matter, why is so much of it gold? We know Dragons collect gems for food, but they don't eat gold do they? That has never been explained, all dragon hordes we see in later episodes consist exclusively of gems (I presume to avoid having to answer the question why they have gold too). So many questions.

I've been on a sandy cliff, I got stuck for roughly 15 minutes do to my feet losing grip, I had t o remove my shoes to compinsate, alternativley I could rock climb with my shoes on no problem, it was my hands that were slipping that was the problem. There was nothing scientifically wrong with ponies, who have hooves (hooves that have the dexterity of shoes, but stil) sliding down a sandy hill when sand can shift unexpecticly more often than a steep mountianside.

I can actually explain the apparent inconsistency with travelling up steep slopes. I first got this idea with Josh's suggestion that it must be magic. Perhaps there's a spell that makes a pony's hooves work almost magnetically (or glue or tape for non-metallic surfaces like rock or wood), bonding to any material, thus allowing them to move up steep slopes (such as mountains) with relative ease should they have enough physical stamina to hold themselves up. This could also explain the problem with sandy slopes--the first few hoofsteps would cause sand to stick to the surface of the ponies' hooves, rendering the spell ineffective and causing them to slide down the rest of the way. Edit: Given the episode where unicorns can walk on clouds wtih a spell, I think this makes a lot of sense. If not clouds (which aren't even solid), why not a steep hill?

That's why we love this show, characters DO remember their lessons, perfect example is comparing Season 1 Rainbow Dash to later episodes like Sleepless in Ponyville or Rarity post Sisterhooves Social. The lessons and development usually stick and when they don't you get the less popular episodes like Mare Do Well and A Friend In Deed.

Well technically the only info we have ever received about dragons are biased from pony's point of view. So in reality all that future episodes tell us is that puberty makes dragons into monsters, which could apply almost anywhere; and that teenagers are jerks, which again can be applied to almost anywhere. There are still a possibility that dragons can grow and develop into different kinds of personalities instead of all being jerks. Depends on his/her personal growth and surroundings.

I think the reason why the dragon in the episode Dragon Shy was not a jerk was because he was clearly an oddball compared to the other dragons found in later episodes, and that is why he lives alone. The dragon from dragon shy is an outcaste and a rouge dragon.

The whole thing about dragons being greedy and jerks by nature may just apply to the ones who haven't grown out of it yet. Ponies know next to nothing about them, and Spike isn't a good candidate because he was born and raised differently. This dragon being actually lax and bothering to listen to Fluttershy's lecture may be a way of saying that the contrary is just as true and it's very ignorant to think that they're ALL like that. Also, this dragon is how old? He's clearly years older than the ones we see Spike interact with. Who isn't to say that he grew out of his or realized that being greedy and a jerk isn't a way to live life? Exceptions do exist. P.S.: From a writer's standpoint, this was pretty risky to write as it's been "confirmed" that dragons are very selfish by nature. If the writers didn't have the whole "the contrary is just as true" in mind while having this dragon listen to a creature he could easily destroy, then it does cause problems. If the whole dragon = selfish thing had more context to it before this episode, then it would feel less jarring. Plot holes like this one only feel less jarring if you put your own headcannons to it, but even that can go so far.

Okay, I need to say this: I HATE this show treatment of dragons. First of all, we cannot say that "all dragons are jerks" because, as Twilight herself admitted, ponies know squat about dragon culture. The dragons that Spike encountered were clearly, based on their personality and size, meant to be teens, and more preciselly, obvious stand-offs for one of those "gangs of obnoxious teenagers" we all had to deal with at some point in our highschools. How do they say anything more about dragon culture then your average obnoxious teenager says about human culture? The episode on which Spike starts rampaging and stealing all treasure he can find also makes zero sense when compared to ANY other episode featuring dragons: Although dragons do hoard treasure, we never see then activelly attempting to pillage pony villages: And, granted how big and fearsome they are, I think it is pretty fair to say that, if there were hordes of dragons pillaging pony villages, we would KNOW. And it is not a puberty thing either: The teen dragons from "Dragon Quest" may be obnoxious, but they dont show any sign of being greedy or seeking treasure. If anything, it is a trait that only Spike has, what is the only logical explanation as for to why we see no other dragon doing that. But that is not the main reason I hate the show portrayal of dragons: The main reason is, they are clearly triyng to make dragons come across as a entire race of assholes... And looking really racist while doing that. Why? Well... Replace "dragon", with, say "black", "Mexican", "Canadian", "Arabian", or really, just ANY kind of nationality or ethnic group, and then you tell me it doesnt come across as offensive. And no, I dont think the show meant dragons to be a stand-off for any ethny in particular, but it is really, REALLY easy to look at it that way, and I dont want to be thinking about racism while watching MLP. ... Sorry... I love this show, but this is the one aspect of it that angers me.

The argument of horses shouldn’t be able to climb a mountain get a bit overruled when you see them hold cups, drink cider, bake etc... Actually considering that Hannibal managed to have elephants climb in the alp in *winter* nonetheless this is one of the most realistic part of the show.

Fluttershy has a natural talent with animals, which explains the situation with Fluttershy and the dragon. Nopony else could have done the same thing, but because it's Fluttershy, it still works.

NO! Josh, I am not aware if you are aware of this now, but this episode showed the first case of Fluttershys Stare! It was hinted at it by the way that she stared at him so intensely, a way we continue to see her stare at other animals and even gets named The Stare! The scene with her and the dragon still holds up AND makes sense!

From what I took the explanation about dragons in season two, I assumed that dragons who grow only due to hoarding become monstrous and that dragons that grow naturally are simply greedy but rational.

I was planning on giving them a more jagged appearance, if that makes any sense, and make their scales more dark. I think the big problem with the dragons in this show was all the bright colors Spike and the teens were given as their complexion

I guess the reason the avalanche zone was the safest because in mountains they have hawks, snakes, lion, etc so maybe there were some of those on parts of the mountain and that's why Twilight avoided going there
