Late comment is late, but about Soarin's nickname 'Clipper' and Rainbow's comment about him 'being as fast as a ship', a clipper is a fast yacht-like vessel from the 19th century and it was considered one of the fastest of its time
@TennoWolf
@TennoWolf 6 жыл бұрын
I think 'Clipper' is more of a video game reference to clipping something and going of course. It's possible that he clipped on one of the obstacles and flailed around, probably close to the ground, and crashed.

@@TennoWolf Clipping isn't necessarily a video game reference, especially when it comes to flying. When aircraft clip things, it's usually a tip-blow but it's catastrophic. Clipping in the videogame sense is about models, hitboxes and collision boxes phasing through one another. Model clipping happens all the time and most people learn to ignore the less egregious examples. Hitbox and collision box clipping is when things get freaky.

I feel this episode would've covered more bases (maybe even made it slightly better) if the writers included a scene where Rainbow goes to have a private talk with Spitfire, and explains that she has negative impressions of "Rainbow Crash" because of personal reasons. Spitfire reads between the lines, realizes that Rainbow was bullied, and explains that EVERY Wonderbolt goes through hazing. But she also adds that there's a line between hazing and bullying, and Spitfire does NOT tolerate the latter. This doesn't fix everything. Rainbow still flubs at training, the other Wonderbolts still call her "Rainbow Crash", and being called that name still hurts. The rest of the episode follows unchanged. But it does shed light on the bullying/hazing issue early, and could put past episodes in a new light.

I served three years in the Israeli air force and I always find Scorchers descriptions of the U.S military so interesting because our military cultures are so different. For example, we didn't have nicknames, people were usually calling each other by their surnames. Second is that there was a lot less machoism. Part of it was due to the fact that most of us didn't really wanted to be there so boasting on what a great soldier you are would not make you look good, another part was that being a team player is a huge part of the IDF soldier ethos, and then there was the fact that at least in the Airforce we had a pretty equal ratio between man and woman. The fact that none of us could quit (barring forging a diagnosis for physical or mental disability ...Or taking the permanent way out, but I don't want to get there.) also meant that people really needed to respect others limits and boundaries, keep all your mental fortitude for the job itself, you can't get out of doing your duty just because you don't feel like it, but that doesn't justify pulling more bullshit over it. So if someone is an introvert and needs his pesonal space or is really sensetive about something, you respect that. I did get to work closely with fighter pilot in my time there, and while they were cocky and boastful and macho, and teased each other a lot. So yeah they acted a lot like the wonderbolts, but when we got three newbies to the squad they didn't act like Rainbow Dash but took some time (and encouragement from the veterans) to open up and pick up more confident attitude. If I'd critic this episode from the point of view of my experience, I'd say that Spit Fire should have picked up that things aren't right sooner and had the talk she had with dash in the end of the episode by day two if not day one.

That's nice, but at the same time, your government, especially the current one is brainwashing you to think that murdering people from another town just to illegally steal their land, German Nazi style no less, is immediately ok because they aren't you and that apparently makes them less than and that the natives of this stolen land deserve to die, and yes Hamas is no better it seems as if he too relies on hate to stay in power

Okay, I'll admit, I was bullied a lot when I moved from my original hometown to where I am now and even in my old hometown, I was bullied. Once in sixth grade, just a few months after I first moved to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, I was called a troll, because some kid in my class back then thought that I was from Lower Michigan. It hurt my feelings so badly that I ran to the girls' bathroom, bawling my eyes out. I have since grown from that and just recently, I realized who I sympathized with the most from MLP: Fluttershy. She and I are both introverts, we both are afraid of not pleasing people, and we both like animals a lot. The main thing about this monologue, however, is that Flutters and I both hold a lot of hope in our hearts that things will get better. So, there's what I've gotta say, hope you don't mind that I said all this.

I think the army's method of training can sometimes go a little too far. They expect people to be complete turn off their emotions and become mindless killing machines when needed. It's understandable since you have to get used to seeing some pretty messed up stuff and you've got to be able to deal with the worst human kind has to offer, but expecting people to just completely forget what they've seen and be like machines is wrong. There's a reason why vets are a higher risk of PTSD, traumatic events have a tendency to linger in the mind for a long time, you don't just get over it.
@tylerharris7081
@tylerharris7081 8 жыл бұрын
Trust me, that is false. I assure you that Basic Training is neither difficult or dehumanizing. We re encouraged to use our heads and think independently. The army just expects you to be wise enough to do as your officers and NCOs tell you and resilient enough to handle the difficult parts maturely.

To add to it, this is for the hating viewers out there. Rainbow Dash is not a bad character and I can list reasons why. 1. She wants her dreams to become reality and she has goals in life. She has the will to get it. 2. As a member of loyalty, she is willing to give up her dream to protect others. She is kind of a childish saint. 3. She is a girl of great confidence and she is not afraid of too many things. She will fail, but try again to succeed. (It's almost as if many of you hate those who won't give up. People love Fluttershy, and she is a humongous sissy of a scardy cat. Love the weak and hate the strong.) 4. She does have a hard time learning what is right or wrong, but maybe she got hurt and she basically forgot her lesson that day. No one is innocent because you all do the same thing. But that is my own piece I said. Don't take this too seriously.

I may of find the scene about Dahs intimate her friends criengey, but I feel like Will and Josh easily trumped Toon, Fox, and Keyframes problems with the episode. Kinda odd since after watching the episode I stay optimistic til I hear what others think of it and then judge from the perspectives to tell if it was a episode that was favorite, great, good, ok, meh, bad, worst, or awful from what I have seen in it. and Newbie Dash was either meh or just ok in my taste. at least it was better than Scare master and Bats.

Keyframe Productions I understand Key. and I'm sorry if my comment sound offended on ur guys opinion. I actually liked this portrayal of Spitfire in this episode. It was actually a lot closer to my head canon of Spitfire. She appears stern and focused with a very dry sense of humor. But when she can tell something is bothering a member of the Wonderbolts or if one of them is acting strange, she confronts them. Telling them either to knock it off or cool it, so that they don't cause danger to the team or themselves. Like an actual Captain should act.

I thought this episode was ok. The slap stick was good and the cringe wasn't bad. There's only one point I didn't like. Spitfire said they all had nicknames, but no one was referred to by their nicknames except Dash. If the point of the nicknames was to bring familiarity and camaraderie, then they all should have been called by their nicknames. The way it was, it did seem like they were just picking on her. I know why they did it, so Dash could learn at the end after she'd been stupid, but still.

One thing I found with more time, is how the cringe can work in it's favor. Like say, I can't believe I'm saying it, with max from parenthood, the cringyness works when you see how it could be 'you' who's the cringey one, and makes the impact all the more stronger as the individual realized how they may spud in RL.

For those wondering what Spitfire's nickname could be, it's most likely "Skid Mark". Why? Because skid marks can happen when you poorly handle your brakes or stirring on the Runway. May be I'm not deep enough in the fandom, but I wish I could hear someone talk about Pinky Pie's tendency to say hurtful things. It always seem to be that she was to self absorbed to consider other ponies feelings in the moment. This seems like a major character flaw that should get its own episode, but everyone seems to blow it off.
@7Seraphem7
@7Seraphem7 8 жыл бұрын
It's not being 'self absorbed' it's that she is simply very oblivious at times. Gets a bit to lost in her own little world to realize what her words and actions are doing. Combined with, when she's excited, she tends to forget that not everypony thinks like her, and so tends to say and do things she would see as harmless, forgetting how others might feel.
@Tinkatube

Fans have addressed it once or twice. Like, it all really depends on the writer to get that trait in-character. The time she drove Fluttershy to tears when she was clearly backing away and upset by what she said? Incredibly out of character, and it's the fault of the writer. What was this, season 2? Yeah, I think so... But the time she talked with Twilight in her castle? When she accurately named all of Twilight's misconceptions, and then REALIZED her mistake and later helped solve the problem? That's closer to how Pinkie ACTUALLY is.
@7Seraphem7
@7Seraphem7 8 жыл бұрын
Boxman Jones It was season 4.. and that was freaking AKR, the writer who has proven time and again to be the one to truly GET Pinkie, and by far the greatest Pinkie Writer they have. No that was not OOC for her, that was perfectly in character, just a combo of all her worst traits coming to the fore at the same time.
@Tinkatube
@Tinkatube 8 жыл бұрын
7Seraphem7 Every writer has a low moment. It's not in-character for Pinkie to be THAT oblivious. Oblivious, yes. But she isn't STUPID or IGNORANT to the feelings of those around her to the point where someone RUNS AWAY CRYING and she's just like 'What?' That isn't in-character. Being a bit slow can be part of her character but not to that extent.
@7Seraphem7
@7Seraphem7 8 жыл бұрын
Boxman Jones Except that was in character, she CAN be quite oblivious, and have trouble realizing when she is over doing it, she understood that what she had meant it to be was a compliment, and did not get how Fluttershy took it the wrong way, or why she was reacting so badly to it. Everything there made sense and fit Pinkie Pie, it was just her worst aspects coming to light. But, noponies' perfect.

I can also relate to this episode (even though I'm not in the military (there is still the possibility of joining through selective service)). I spent four years in my high school marching band. And learning a full show takes a substantial amount of time. Side note; people in marching band should be admired (I freaking HATE the stereotype that says that marching band is for nerds), because marching band is actually a lot more challenging than it looks for a few of reasons. 1.) You practically get your butt handed to you during practice (it also helps you stay in shape) 2.) During performances, you have to maintain proper marching technique, playing a memorized set of songs, maintain complex formations, and march to the correct rhythm all while facing the audience's general direction (there is a lot more that goes on from a marching band member's perspective) So there are a few reasons why people in marching band should be admired. Not a lot of people can do that. ... Wow. Just typing that makes me miss my high school Marching Band (East Lyme High School). I was with them since I was a freshman. At first I didn't like it. In fact, I was considering the option of leaving. But I ended up staying, and boy, am I glad I did. I made a number of long-lasting friendship bonds. In the East Lyme Viking Band's prime, it was HUGE! So big, in fact, that it rivaled the UConn Marching Band in terms of size. Then, over the years, their numbers slowly dwindled down. This year, the band is at 20 members altogether at most. I'm afraid that this may be the last season for the East Lyme Viking Marching Band.

I still can't shake this feeling like the episode implies that you can treat you friends/teammates however you want and if they don't like what you're doing its not your problem, especially if you can wright it off as a tradition. In the end Rainbow Dash succeeds at the air show, except for the terrible decision she made at the end of it, despite the apathetic and/or oblivious nature of her new team that only served as an obstacle that increased her chances of failure. If It was for that sake of testing her emotional strength then it was done at the worst possible time since they all seemed to want the performance to go well, but only reduced there chances because apparently nicknames are a non-negotiable requirement no matter the situation.

I love this episode. Did people really say that she regressed? Not at all! It was a huge step forward for her to be able to take a disparaging nickname, laugh at herself a little, blend in. She's always needed to build herself up constantly and never let anything in that hurt her ego, and really, it left her the most insecure member of the group. This was a real step toward actual self-security.

To be fair to Rarity and Twilight, they aren't military. Especially Rarity. She probably hasn't the first clue how military or even para-military groups operate. As for Twilight, her brother was captain of the guard, sure, but I somewhat doubt she paid much attention to his social experiences as a recruit. P.S. I mean, I love the lesson given at the end along with the plot idea and was glad to see Rainbow Dash finally becoming a wonderbolt, but this episode was so cringing to watch. It's a weakness of mine, I can't stand scenes in any TV show or movie where a character makes a fool out of him/herself, I just cringe at it the whole time.

To me, it all depends on how others use the nickname that's important. If they use it in a playful manner, then it shouldn't be a bother. The Wonderbolts and Flight Camp fillies however, were using her nickname in a demeaning way. Doing that doesn't help you become better. All it does is hurt your confidence

I think my major contention with the episode comes from them putting the reveal of the other names at the end of the episode. I'm sure most would agree that had that been shown earlier rather than just mentioned, a lot of the hate would have been left behind. But because of the placement of the reveal, it also does put the appearance of military culture in a negative light. Especially for kids who have had bullying issues, it could make, in their eyes, nothing more than another extension of that trauma and put them away from ever joining the military or even worse, denouncing those that do take volunteer. I just think that if the episode was handled a little better, it could have been greater than what we got.

The "everyone gets bad nicknames in the military so they're all the same" argument doesn't hold water to me when the nicknames become personalized. "Newbie" is fine because everyone's the newbie at some point and everyone's on even footing there, but do you really think Soarin's going to be as hurt by his wing-clipping nickname as Dash is by the one she has a personal, painful childhood memory for? No. I realize the Wonderbolts weren't aware of that, but that's why you don't give mean nicknames to people you don't know. I've got plenty of friends and a mother who were all in the military, and they'll be the first to tell you that the way the military does things is often not the best. Most of them say it's done irreparable things to them that they wish they could take back. There are people who get stuck with nicknames they hate for YEARS, and some of the Wonderbolts were just being mean-spirited. I've yet to see an episode that makes me get why Dash looks up to them so much.

The big problem with how Newbie Dash and how it uses Hazing as a plot element, MOST people don't know or really understand the concept of Hazing....But EVERYONE knows what Bullying feels like, and the line between the two is VERY easy to blur. We only find out LATER that the Wonderbolts meant no malice or spite by constantly calling her "Rainbow Crash", and if you're not familiar with the nuances of Hazing, you're not going to see it as anything other than malicious teasing. It didn't help that they used the "no we were just giving you the standard newbie treatment" explanation as a TWIST at the very end, so they were expecting you to not see it for good-natured hazing and to see it as cruel bullying. The fact that we're seeing this from Rainbow Dash's perspective, know her backstory, and have no reason to doubt her experiences, means 99% of viewers won't be able to relate to the Hazing experience and won't enjoy seeing it happen to Rainbow Dash.

I think the reason Spitfire was "acting uncharacteristically" was because that herself in the military. When in the military, you have two sides of yourself, your soldier side and your civilian side. Actually, the same could be said for almost anywhere; your school side and your home side, your work side and your vacation side, etc.

Intresting that you pointed out that the other mane six was´t helping. That´s like a invisible lesson. Know when your friends don´t know what you can do. None of them knows how the wonderbolts works. 18:36 - 18:42, I laughed so hard :p I'm a bit two-way about this episode for personal reasons, but I liked the idea of it being about Dash fitting in on a team where the performances are meant to be uniform and in sync, rather than a team (Mane 6's Elements of Harmony) where it was a team of individual traits. Neither team is the best or worst to be, and it was good to show Dash's growth to that. As for the hazing...ehhhh it hovered on the line sometimes of being pure mean, but it was also good to see that come to a close too, and calm down.

This was one of those episodes that I totally understood where Rainbow Dash was coming from. And as strange as that seems, I liked that the writers explored this side of her. I may not come from a military background, but I remember there being times in school that I was bullied because of my... well, "dynamic" personality. I would be so excited, with new ideas to better the group, and ready to provide everything I could, that the line between me being being bullied and walked over like a door mat, and me being bossy and a spotlight hogger, was a difficult one to see sometimes. It's tough when your normal behavior (previously accepted by your friends and family) does not fly within this new group. Especially when that new group is made up of your idols. Rainbow just expected a lot from herself, to be able to seamlessly fit in on the first day. She really does find herself at the bottom of the totem pole, and she doesn't know what to do about it. And Spitfire did handle it pretty well. Rainbow did need a bit of a reality check, as salty as it was. But all the name-calling, and pointing out her mistakes, blinded RD into thinking that the Wonderbolts didn't feel she was included in the group at all! It's ironic, almost. As soon as RD lets go of her pride and admits what was wrong, the Wonderbolts answer her by basically saying there wasn't a problem to begin with. They called her "Rainbow Crash" because it was, like Josh said, a term of endearment. And as soon as RD finally understands this language, she sees that she already was accepted as part of the group. She didn't need to do crazy things to prove herself anymore. She now just had the responsibility of being part of the team. Anyway, that's my take from it. Like it, hate it, whatever. Spread the positive vibes on the Internet, people! ;D

Ah, poor Josh at the end. He and Willstanator (is he the guy who was the original voice of Ed and The Cape in Ed+'s Adventures, it sure sounds like him) brought up some good points. I just think that this episode was trying to tackle something way out of its comfort zone (a show about friendship is probably the last place you'd expect to find talking about hazing and newbie shaming) and as a result of picking a brand new writer to do the episode it ended up sort of overslimpifying a very complex real life issue that's still being questioned and debated to this day.
