My best tips: Always keep your OC's to a limit. If they are good at one thing, say fighting, say they aren't very witty or fast, as for muscle for a bulky dragon can slow it's movements down. During all times of a roleplay, take turns. (This avoids people with fast typing skills to have a huge advantage in fights and complex interactions that requite a lot of back-and-forth wordplay. This makes it so that you both get an advantage, in fact, as for you can both get to think about what you want to say before you do.) Say you say that your OC is fighting your friend's oc. You'll say, "-They slashed across the other dragon's snout.-" and the other person, for example, says "-They roared furiously, holding their snout and clawing the other dragon's stomach.-" You can take turns, and every other time something happens, it'll be your actions. For characters with manipulative powers, always have a weakness for it. Say you can dig yourself into other peoples minds, you can make it so they can block you out like any other voice. If you're not quite sure what's overpowered or not, try to compare it fighting a battle with one of your good characters (who aren't op or up), and try to estimate if the fight would be long or short. If your character kills them in a near instant, try to fix some of it. If the battle lasts a long time, then your character is probably perfect. (Also they should be friends so they don't have to fight :>)

Yup, that's how I do arena fights as a prisoner. Usually I'm paired up with a little kid ( man do I love little kids ), and I always let them type- Unless they're power playing, then I kindly just say to the kid, " power playing doesn't make the fight fun for the other person, can you kinda do what I'm doing? "

My definition of a Mary Sue is someone either overly OP or someone where the world around them bends to their needs. OP-ness doesn't make someone automatically a Mary Sue. Darkstalker was the most powerful dragon, but he was able to be defeated. The world bends to the Mary Sue by giving them unexplained abilities and powers. If a Mary Sue has no experience in fixing ships, she shouldn't be able to repair a steam ship better than someone who's job is to work on ships. She shouldn't be able to suddenly develop amazing fighting skills and beat a highly trained enemy, if she has little to no actual training. Thank you for coming to my Mary Sue ted talk :3

Role playing can be scary at first, but just test it out with a genre you like! It’s weird at first and sometimes you can feel scared by it, but the fun and reward of having a good role play is quite rewarding! If you’re afraid to start alone, you can find people in game/in the lobbies that want to start up an rp. If you’re unsure how to start an rp, just check out chat, create an oc, and figure out how to do it as you go! I’ve rped for about 5-ish years now and I understand the feeling of being afraid but most people won’t actually shred you to bits for asking to rp with them, in fact, they’ll usually let you into their rp! If you do come across the toxics ones however, report them and be sure to block them if you can.

Another thing to add on to Mary Sue: it’s okay to have powers such as animus, flamesilk, night’wing powers, or fire scales as long as you have a weakness that fits your character. Even Darkstalker had his own weaknesses and he was above powerful. Don’t play the main character in rp it’s very annoying

I usually just put firescales on my SkyWings so I can see without torches, so if it's not in the bio, they technically don't have it. I do this with my Sea Wings too, but just because all SeaWings are supposed to have wing patterns in the books.

I give my firescales characters weaknesses to put them don on the OP list, such as easily manipulated or unintelligent. But that’s a cool trick, it’s easier than firebreath everywhere!

I had an OP oc, like many. Half NightWing, quarter SkyWing, quarter SandWing. In short, had much, much weaker versions of the normal abilities. She could not breathe fire (which is weird because ALL THREE TRIBES BREATHE FIRE-) her scales were hot to touch, but would occasionally flare up (hence her name), burning anything within proximity. Had a barb but much, much weaker poison than a SandWing, possibly rivaling that of a black widow in terms of danger, rather than a Dragonbite viper. Was a prophet. She gained all of these due to being hatched at the exact moment a huge solar flare occurred. This is also why she has pale yellow-orange scales, despite being half NightWing and part SkyWing. Was deathly allergic to water. Touching water causes the touched scales go cold and huge nasty blisters form. Has one eye due to a fight near a river. Was dyslexic and not book smart, but was incredible in fighting, being untrusting and being able to spot anything that might assume the dragon a threat because her scales can't really burn anyone, they're as hot as a dark plastic bench in the summer noon (unless they flare).

You know, I'm fine with firescales actually! The trait is mostly negative except in battle. After all, you can't touch anything or anyone, cause it'll burn up into basically a crisp. You can only really just..... Sit there and maybe fight. You can't do anything normal, and can't have really any physical touch with anyone.. But you want to know what I want to see? The other twin that comes with flamescale dragon. You could make a very interesting character with them actually! (I'm actually planning on making flamescale/weaker fire twins in my last two Skywing spots) It's just an interesting idea. If we have so many flamescale, there's bound to plenty of weaker fire twins who've managed to survive.

I really don’t understand why people create characters that have firescales on only part of their body?? I’m pretty sure that’s not at all possible in the canon universe?? Also, firescales can be op in roleplays, that’s true. But judging by Peril, firescales are much more of a negative trait than a positive one. Basically, firescales are good for fighting and struggle with literally everything else, so if used properly they can definitely make good, balanced characters.

I only control other characters if they are not an actual player. I usually only play roleplays that are small, 1-3 people and we take turns controlling the other characters. I like to give my dragons flaws or mental issues that are caused because of something that has happened in the story. (Whenever I play as a firescale (not much) I usually make it something bad about the dragon.) Usually when I do roleplays, I just make up a dragon on the spot and grow the backstory according to the story so they pretty much end up with a blank bio. I'm a fast typer (66 wpm is my best) but I never use it to an advantage. I like to wait for the other player to respond. Also, 1 dislike. Now we know that Kestrel has been here.

I do read peoples' bios to get to know them BUT I don't use it to their advantage in Roleplays. I also use animus and firescales but not much and always a way to counteract it. I try my best to not be too OP, and in the RPs I host I say u can't be supa OP. This RP will help me be a much better gamer now. Thanks! Keep up the good work! :)

I think that what people should do with the special abilities thing is limit the special ability to one dragon. Like, I only gave one of my skywings firescales. The exception to this would be stuff like the moon globe for the icewing, because it doesn’t actually make your dragon stronger, it’s just a cool little thing to have.

The “attacks” I was trying to do were vital for the continuation of the role play (the character in question was to be injured) but we didn’t realize they were a power player. We tried to explain to them that this was what was happening (they agreed before hand) but they just power played, and so the role play was called off

I am what you would call a generous speed typer. I am sonic on the keyboard but I won't add to an attack till the other person responds. Also tip for ocs with aminus abilities or firescales: Just don't mary sue it. You can have your oc be a completely normal dragon, they don't have to be afraid to make friends out of worry of burning them or they can use their abilities sparingly. Another tip is dont have the parents hate or use them, that trope's been done to death and is really hard to pull off well without being seen as a mary sue/gary stu/charlie loo

My character, Flicker is a firescales. I do not kill without perm and I also only give slight burns. This makes the fight less boring and last longer! :D She also isn’t allowed past the arena, to allow enemies to escape. She can’t burn the chains off prisoners or herself becuz that’s just plain unfair. Venom boils on her and turns into tar, chemically burning her scales into a black color. Sand wing stingers DO paralyze her, but get burnt in the process. (Only 1 sting allowed per battle, no overusing.) She has to eat her armor to survive during battle. (You break off the armor, then get rid of it, her firescales will dim and she will be weak, allowing you to attack easier.) So she has her pros and cons, but it is VERY weighed out. Not all firescales are bad, my friends!

My best advice not to be a Mary sue is to have equal amounts of disadvantages and advantages personality wise or any other. For example, for a personality, you could have "Caring, nice, bold" But also have "Insecure and flat" So it's like a real person, nobody's perfect. Power-wise, "NightWing mind reading" for example plus "Weaknesses: Sometimes overwhelmed by power" is equal. Sometimes you have to ask questions about your characters backstory and how they got to where they are, like, "How did my OC get NightWing foresight?" and come up with a reasonable answer. I'm a very fast typer- but I'm also awful at remembering fighting moves. Also some recommendations from someone who isn't important but has been roleplaying for many years- I recommend if you're going to make a firescales character to make them not a full firescales. What this means is they are not immune to fire and can still be damaged by it. Or you can make them be burned by their own firescales from time to time, albeit it is not a cannon downside. Always give powerful characters defects or make them infrequent. Or, make them have a uncommon role they can use to their advantage! My firescales OC, Col, is usually a chef or royal chef as the job, and by the way, that role is actually VERY fun! Or, if you're going to make an animus OC, maintain it to the known tribes, or give them a direct parent/grandparent/ancestor etc. that can carry that gene. I, myself, have an IceWing OC that is an animus because one of her ancestors was a royal SeaWing. Of course she doesn't know but, she's a very shy character that doesn't like talking, and is afraid of importance, so in a roleplay should she ever find out she is, she will fear herself and hate it. Anyways remind me to edit this comment later I have a chat I want to attend to prove I'm active in it. Things I hate in roleplays, I don’t play this but I bought the game to test it out cause why not -^- however, I rp mostly on neon district, highly recommend it as long as you read the story line and roles 1. Being immortal, it ruins the fact it’s a cyberpunk rp game, there can be mutant creatures or humans with paranormal abilities sure, there’s a testing lab near by, but being immortal makes it impossible to have fights, not to mention there are rp weapons for you to shoot people with. 2. Dodging *EVERYTHING* it ruins the whole fighting premise, and I’m pretty sure a normal human being can’t dodge a bullet unless their lucky. 3. At random attacking, and growling (if your in a nonhuman rp game), punching sound effects, and gunshots are ANNOYING. It ruins rp effects, So don’t do it ;-; 4. Specifically attacking someone who is OOC, or aka out of character, it’s unfair to that person, not to mention they aren’t even roping right now, so there really isn’t a point. 5. And finally number five! I’ll come back and edit in some extra slots for annoyances, but it’s the morning for me, and I’m tired and want breakfast. An annoying thing that happens is these, frp fights: *Makes tsunami killing everyone* *jumps really high over tsunami* It makes no logical sense so I don’t like them at all, however you enjoy roping like this it’s completely fine :)

Well, let’s Compare a bit. When you’re saying he would smile and contrast with his smile, or in contrast with smiles, it’s a bit too plain. For example, let’s say the characters name was Rex. There isn’t any other way to establish it unless it is Rex would smile (well, other than establishing it as ‘Rex smiled.’) It is used very commonly in the role playing community. Since your technically saying what your character is doing, your usually into that Author mode.

Seeing as firescales are an in-game feature, people should ask for permission before burning someone, but they're still allowed due to being a part of the customization. Same is true of mind reading Nightwings. Permissions needed, but probably still should be allowed in my opinion. But you can void special abilities if you want to.

Also, I have some tips on how to avoid these! First, if you want to roleplay a specific plot, talk it over with the people you're role-playing with first. Second, if you type fast, it doesn't mean that you're a speed typer like shown. Simply make sure that you give the other person a turn to attack or defend.

Great examples! Luckily I RP in a small group on Insta and always start out with young or weak characters, that way there’s no danger of accidentally overstepping. But I have seen someone do multiple things on this list all at once and it really screwed w our little dynamic. Luckily that roleplaying quit soon after, and took their drama with them (they did NOT take kindly to constructive criticism). A big part of role playing is letting other ppl help shape your character. It can be frustrating when u have an idea and something goes completely in another direction, but that’s just part of the deal, and it can be fun if u open yourself up to it. For example, I had a character that existed solely to introduce conflict into the rp and to further my main character. I fully planned to kill off this dude once he outlived his usefulness. But then another roleplayer came along and started interacting w him in a way that no one else had yet, and slowly he began to change. Now his redemption arc is one of my favorite things I’ve ever written. Roleplaying can completely surprise you, and that’s okay. If letting other ppl have a hand it building your story bothers you, that’s fine, but it also means that roleplaying probably isn’t right for you. Being a bad roleplayer doesn’t make you a bad or selfish person, it just means you either need to adapt or you have to explore other hobbies, both of which are good things to do anyways. I've dealt with speed typers before and they kept attacking without letting me respond. It was in a warrior cats game and I tried confronting them about it but they wouldn't listen so I ended up just leaving the roleplay all together and left the game. (It was a hostage situation where I had kidnapped a kit and they were sent to retrieve it. They attacked my OC and I wasn't able to do anything because I was too slow at responding to all the attacks. Please give people a chance to respond when you are fighting, roleplaying is supposed to be fun for everyone, not just the fast typers!)

Well, my theory is that you can be a firescales or some other op dragon if you sacrifice some of your other abilities. Ex. Say a rainwing firescale (I know not lore friendly, but for the sake of the example) if a rainwing has firescales, you could perhaps take away their venom. Or they can’t camouflage. Something like that.

With my characters I tend to have them either be super stressed or have horrible self care. Like me. My Ice-wing is an insomiac and the pressure placed on him because of his circle resulted in that. I tend to add small issues with my character. At least two weaknesses so that they are not Mary Sue.

Silvia Valiente Silvia Valiente it depends. If you go around enchanting people every few seconds and making them do things against their will like Darkstalker but much more obvious and worse, then yeah. It’s bad. However, if you are using it in a manner as to allow players to use their characters and keep their differences then that’s alright. Such as I somebody gets hurt then you can use your magic to call out for help, as the player specifically if they want the injury to scar or they want a heal, or if they want to die. It is better to stick with the whole “animus magic erodes the soul” thing as otherwise people may think it’s jut normal magic. But you could just use it sparingly if you don’t want to go down that route. When you do want to take the “hyper controlling animus” path, get a few friends together and plan things out roughly and make sure people on the server realise this. Don’t drag them in. I do use animus OC’s sometimes but I usually keep to these rules when using them. Other than that though your OC doesn’t seem that bad. Maybe try to place in some personality “weaknesses” such as a short temper, or overly shy to give some suggestions. These can also apply outside of Roblox roleplay as well. As an idea and something I use it’s a good idea to base aspects of your OC’s behaviour roughly on yourself as a reference point. This helps with continuity and means that you don’t have to keep reminding yourself about how your character should act. Just don’t make them the perfect you. Flaws make your characters interesting but too many makes them boring and depressing to be around. Sorry if it waffled on, and got sidetracked.

a quick recap or if you want to know everything beforehand for some reason. i don’t know if this was done yet 1. God modding -using the other person’s character. for like, no reason or something -solution: do not make other people’s characters yours 2. Power-playing -pretty much able to kill you without even knowing your existence. also a lot of those characters dodge everything, yet the other ones can’t dodge. -solution: do not just **dodge** every single attack. also do not kill everyone with the blink of your character’s eye. 3. Mary/Gary Sues -a character that is flawless, the world bowing before them. often associated with 2, aka power-playing -solution: put some flaws in them, big or small. at least ONE big flaw (maybe a phobia or something. ALSO RESEARCH IT!) 4. Meta Gaming -your character having knowledge they shouldn’t. kinda like a fourth wall break. -solution: do not make your characters op and know everything about the other character. 5. Forcing Plot -basically making the other person’s character obey your plot even if they don’t like it. -solution: let the other person type out the response. plots are usually just the setting of the story by the way. 6. Speed Typing -typing fast and not letting the other character type a response. -solution: let the other person type out a response to maximum 2 of your lines. some things that you can slip away with (this is for general characters, not WoF. also might add more): -your character is written to kill everything they touch. usually like a personification of death or something (to 2) DO NOT MAKE THEM ALL-POWERFUL THOUGH. -your character is psychic and can read minds. BUT, this does NOT mean knowing a character’s weakness when they’re NOT thinking about it. (to 4)
