I will say this about Canada's Drag Race: for as many problems as the first season had, it really seems like they listened to the complaints viewers had with this season to make the follow-up season better. I don't mind Season 1 per say, but Season 2 is an improvement on it in my eyes. Let's hope that continues when it comes to Down Under Season 2.

Same thing happened with Art Simone when they randomly brought her back on Drag Race Down Under and she got a lot of flack for it. I'm pretty sure even she said she didn't ask for that to happen, that's just what the show did with her. Same with Rita here. Was she favored a lot and won quite a few challenges she probably shouldn't have? Heck yea. But do I really think she asked to be favored in this? No.

That isn't Art's fault and she shouldn't have been crucified for taking another shot at a competition she clearly cared about very much.

I liked both seasons of CDR but you can DEFINITELY see the riggory and favoritism in CDR1. A couple of Rita’s wins should’ve went to Jimbo IMO (Jimbo’s denim outfit & pageant performance vs. Rita’s…#Choices). I’m glad that Jeffrey spoke out about his treatment on the show. I completely understand where people come from with their critics. But I also think that people that aren't specifically French-Canadian cannot understand how Rita Baga is pure comedy genius to us. The critics towards her are fair, because you could say : she shouldn't be genius just to one group, she should have tried to broader her drag. But for me, I'm so glad she stayed true to her culture. And I think that's why she's become a level A star in Québec since Drag Race (doing Big Brother, becoming judge and animator on multiple other variety shows, she now has her own show too, she's invited everywhere, in publicity of big companies, you literally see her everyday on your TV) I just wish that when people did these video they'd say that. Okay 5 mins into the video and first of all, my condolences for miss Lap Top, may she be well in the digital multiverse of heaven. Canada Season 1 is just a gift that keeps on giving, even just you squirming at the decisions and the placements is still proof that this season is TV gold. But despite the many ru-mixes of the season, the reaction from fans and the memage and pawnage of the judges that are two years later still fueling my love for the season, let's all fucking agree that each queen on the season got to showcase themselves 100%. That is the ultimate badge of honor for me, cuz NOTHING anybody from Canada season 2 did matches season 1 showcase especially in fields of outfit creation, snatch gamery, acting talents, mini challenge gaggery (seriously Canada season 1's teleprompter and national anthem mini challenges are clips i can watch forever). And the cast felt way more organic, bitchy and dynamic, like BoBo and Ilona fighting over nothing, Jimbo eating a sandwitch, I mean name one thing anybody did on season 2 in the workroom that was memorable. Give season 1 this, we will never forget it, and half of the audience still hadn't watched season 2 cuz it was the 10th in a row of much better seasons in one damn year.
@danielyavin74983 жыл бұрын
I agree that season 1 was more iconic, and the cast was more memorable (honestly one of my favourite casts of all time). But season 2 had great talent, some jaw dropping looks, a pretty enjoyable acting challenge which is rare, maybe the best rusical, no annoying drama (I Stan Eve, and except for her the only storyline was the brat pack who weren't insufferable) and no blatant rigging. It worked like clockwork, not an iconic mess. Also saying it was drowning in a sea of better seasons - Canada was pretty much the 3rd/4th best season this year, especially running next to UK3 and Italy, somewhat less iconic trainwrecks. This year hit some high highs with UK2 AS6 and Espana (which only has it's predictable win against it), and some of the worst lows in history. Canada was def on the high part of the scale.
@pyrolusite_d3 жыл бұрын
@@danielyavin7498 agreed on some parts, but idunno, watching queens like Charity, Choriza and Vanity Milan, three of the most exciting new artists I got to know, and on the same time airing queens whose even names I didn't got to know, nor cared much to do so, was the major factor of disinterest for me personally. And the cast just felt like going through the motions, the ones that I did care for, like Ocean, Stephanie and Suki, got booted literally the first few weeks, and I didn't get the hype for the brats dolls or Eve, to me it was Ice Sis' season all the way through. And compared to the first season, the design looks were nowhere as polished or creative literally from the first episode, the snatch game barely had one good contestant whereas on first season they had only two real flops or maybe three, and speaking of flops the song challenge was the worst in Drag Race history, whereas I quote 'sorry aboot it' lyrics all the time, especially KiKi's verse. The lip syncs were also disappointing, I mean Kamora Amour (my fave who got shat on by everybody for being a goofball, now I know how it feels to be a Jimbo stan) summed it up best in her lip sync. My thesis: just because the judging was better does not mean that the talent on display that got judged was better. Not even only talent, season 1 felt like drag queens in their natural habitat just being filmed. We will not forget the untucked drama, the workroom drama with Lemon and Pryianka and Ilona. The moment season 2 ended all chances of redeeming itself in my eyes was when Ice Sis won the design challenge and Synthia just said 'gag' with a stone cold face and a glassy expression, like a robot or something. It just felt like all seasons of Drag Race analyzed by an AI and that is what came out. No shade to the queens, they are awesome, but I will take a messy season with a ton of character over a polished season with none.

I just finished the season and I am actually baffled by the mistreatment of Jimbo. She was denied three to four wins that she clearly deserved while also bringing the drama. Her critique about using the time better when she was the one who put the most work in her outfit was absurd. Maybe they didn't think she would be liked in the fandom? Also Rita got two wins she didn't deserve and two bottoms she didn't deserve either. Scarlett and Boa got a lot of passes for absolutely no reason. Kiara, Starzy, Tynomi, Ilona and Kyne didn't get highs when they deserved, but got lows or bottoms without deserving. Also, Priyanka is a very weird winner because she was not the best in the eyes of the fandom (Jimbo was), did not have the best track record (Rita did), was not the best in the finale (Scarlett was) and even her wins were not indisputable (speacially makeover), but at the same time they didn't give her a winner edit, they also didn't give anyone else.

IMO I like when the queens and the season is a little bit messy, it's reality tv of course, but I felt s2 was a bit too clean and rehearsed for my liking whereas s1 had those messy moments that made me remember why I liked early seasons of the show (of course the judging in season 1 is still an issue I have don't get me wrong). Lastly, the cast of season 1 is easily more memorable than 2 for me as well, although there are some standouts for me like Synthia Kiss.

I recently rewatched the first episode of this season and one thing I noticed was how they edited it so the two black judges gave all the negative criticism. Like Juice Boxx and Lemon’s looks were objectively bad and the white judges were edited to say “oh darling but you were so cute” while the black judges gave all the actual critique like “the hemlines are unfinished and the look is messy”. Just an interesting observation I had.

Yup. The mistreatment of Jimbo is without a doubt one of my major complaints. The first time I watched this season it was PAINFUL with the judging. Lemon was robbed too. However. YES, one of my all-time favourite seasons. 💓 Idk, maybe some things just translate differently across cultures and languages, but the judging in CDR1 didn't bother me at all. I understood their reasoning, even when I didn't agree with them. Did I stan Lemon and Jimbo? Obviously. Did I want Priyanka to win from the very beginning? Also yes.

I actually agree with all of this. I LOVED CDR1. I picked Priyanka from episode 1. I also couldn't get enough Lemon. Sure some girls went home way too soon (Starzy) and some stayed way too long (BOA) but I really enjoyed how good everyone was. Even the judging didn't bother me. I didn't get "mean" so much as "these judges haven't figured out how to judge properly yet." Also, Brooklyn was never know for personality in her season. She was a look queen so OF COURSE runway matters when she's in charge! Such a great season!

the main issue with the judging was the structure. The US version has a panel structure that works: Ru (the host/head judge/decision maker) Michelle (sassy secondary host, knowledgable in pop culture and fashion, seems to care about the queens a little bit) and Carson/Ross (recurring tertiary judges that alternate every week, one fashion oriented/one pop culture oriented) (NOT SANTINO). All three of them in the first season tried to act like RuPaul giving their best one-liners. It was exhausting, and Jeffrey/Stacy took their roles a bit too seriously and it seemed like they were playing the snatch game as Ru. Brooke should've been the "Ru", Stacy should've been the "michelle" and Jeffrey should've been the "Ross/Carson" role. Luckily they fixed this in Season 2. Also I feel that the only one who actually understood the assignment for the "Sorry about it" thing was Lemon.

I honestly love DRCAN1. it’s got so many amazing personalities, some of the funniest and most meaningful workroom moments, some incredible challenge performances, amazing lipsyncs and runways, and despite the judging I think they really did give almost every queen a chance to shine and endear themselves to the world. it’s one of my favorite casts ever. I know the judging makes no sense, but everything outside of that is so good that I’m willing to look past it. it’s not even quite so bad on a rewatch when you know what’s coming each week and it’s not a surprise. if you pretty much fast forward through the judging each episode then it’s a top-tier season (and quite frankly, I enjoyed season 2 a lot less - the judging made way more sense, but there was a lot less that drew me in and made me excited to see what would happen each week. I had no strong feelings about half the cast, including some of the “main characters” of the season”, whereas on season 1 I was excited about all of them. it was just a less interesting season)

@oncetastic3 жыл бұрын
If I have to say one of the biggest positives on the season, it’s that it got better over time really well due to the likeability and talent of the queens to a point where the season aged like wine. During airing everyone said that jimbo should’ve won every challenge or episode she was in (that honestly could’ve happened) but some wins felt more deserved with time (The pageant, the first acting challenge, etc) and those are some examples about how a season for me personally got more enjoyable with time passing by, this season is so good due to the queens and even with the production messing up as much as they can. I can tell the people who casted queens and editors who picked what to showcase from each queen did a wonderful job (and I’m so happy they got hired again for S2)

The real problem with Canada's Drag Race is that the French Canadian queens compete in their second language - in case of Adriana in the second season, she did it in her third language after Spanish, French -, which is English, and all the other English Canadian queens do it in their first language. The competition could be more fair if the French queens could also compete in French, or the English queens do some challenges in French, which I doubt, they could do it.

Kiara’s verse was also legendary/absolute _fire_ in “Not Sorry Aboot It”!! And while we’re discussing that episode,it will always drive me crazy how Tynomi revealed into a _much_ better hair look during the lip sync. (Now, yes the look she revealed into _was_ pretty simple/boring buuuut, aside from the colors, her “main” hair outfit was _also_ pretty simple/boring, however, it was also ugly AF and hella messy. Thus the choice seems like a no-brainer _to me._ But, of course, I’m not anybody! lol) And, now, speaking of decisions that drove/drive me crazy, Starzy not only not _winning_ the Week 1 design challenge, but _NOT EVEN PLACING IN THE TOP_ for the truly _incredible_ jacket she made not only still _baffles_ me, it also still _pisses me the F off!!_ lol. Oh well. It’s just a reality competition show centered around Drag Queens. I’ll be just fine! lol. (If only every other “fan” could think/feel this way!!)

IN the house ball challenge, the Paper team actually looked like they were delivering a Ball. You had like the head of the house Jimbo in this case that has the royal look and then the other queens are part of the house playing like the warriors protecting the royal. And if the outfits were made with actual fabric they would've looked amazing, the plastic team definetly was better on the "desing with this materials" challenge but Paper had an actual story that could be seen on a ball
