Another season of Drag Race UK has finished up, but the reception to this season has not been nearly as positive as the first two seasons, and I'm here to solve the mystery as to why!
Double shantays, double eliminations, two winners, no winners, no season of RuPaul's Drag Race has been so twisty and turny. And not many have been called into question for its riggory like this season has. Should Choriza and River both been sent home? Should Krystal Versace have won the season? Were Charity Kase and Vanity Milan treated unfairly by RuPaul and the producers? We're going to dig into every episode of UK3 and figure out what was rigged and what was not.
Let me know what you think of the season overall and what moment had you the most enraged at your TV screens in the comments below!

I don't think you meant to offend anybody and it seems to be quite a common mistake in the US. For reference, spanish actor Antonio Banderas was labeled "POC" at the Oscars. But you took the comments into consideration and addressed them, which shows will to learn. I encourage you to look into Brexit and the xenophobia inmigrants in the UK are facing if you want to learn more about Choriza's situation. Who knows, maybe you could use it for a "The mistreatment of Choriza May" video.

Thank you for your videos. You’re very entertaining and interesting. But you didn’t do anything wrong and tbh this sensitive can’t say anything without having to apologize is taking the fun out of everything for me. It’s sad because I’ve been a fan of drag race, your channel, and the drag community for years. The whole point of drag is to push limits, make people laugh and be yourself, and I’m sorry but constantly censoring and apologizing for jokes or mis speaking because everyone is super sensitive is not enjoyable and not letting people be themselves. IMO. I’m sorry but I think this is the last video I can watch for the reasons I mentioned. I’m sure you disagree and that’s ok. Thank you for the content I watched for years. Best of luck with the channel :)

The Snatch Game episode still makes me upset because 1) RuPaul asked almost every queen to change the character they chose, regardless of how well they were able to portray their decision; 2) the only 2 queens that didn't take RuPaul's "advice" were punished with a double sashay and 3) Scarlet was given a high placement for literally only making RuPaul laugh. I like Home Alone as much as the next person, but there is nothing drag about portraying a character like that and it was extremely irritating to constantly zoom in on Scarlet's face when she would do the scream. I want more moments like Gigi Goode where RuPaul told her the robot wouldn't be funny and then she wins the Snatch Game as Maria the Robot.
@AngryCandy89
@AngryCandy89 3 жыл бұрын
This! To be fair, Scarlett didn't prepare for Mackaulay, so she had no option than to go with the obvious. But I feel they saved her from the bottom just because she did what Ru said. I mean, I can't blame Scarlett for following the advice of the person that chooses the winner. If anything, blame Ru, because some of her suggestions were "choices" (Choriza as Cher, WTF?). Also, I feel like Ru isn't doing that great with her replies in Snatch Game. In earlier seasons she would still try to get a joke out of the queen that was not doing so great, now she just watches them bomb.

@@AngryCandy89 Oh, I 100% blame RuPaul. Not only were the sugguestions questionable, like you said, but the job as host is to make a show the audience will enjoy. And she's not doing her job if she's asking the queens to do characters only she will find entertaining.

Also they’ve put so many queens in the bottom for doing the same thing, such as Jaiden Diore Fierce playing Raven and them saying her seeing a vision got old but i also understand that Scarlett just didn’t have time to prepare some actual jokes other than the scream. It was also this episode where Krystal did really bad but RuPaul made sure to give her the pep talk on the runway about how she was born to do drag and no one can do it like her. Just to really rub it in the audience's eyes that she will be in the final even if she did bad on any episode like this one.

I have a real problem with people saying Lawrence and Kitty have a similar drag aesthetic because THEY HAVE NOT. Kitty is all about sexy funny glam popstar when Lawrence has more of an opulent drag energy, their fashion are not the same... they just are both plus size, white and funny... I find it baffling that production would've thought "we're not crowning Kitty, because people reacted poorly to Lawrence winning". People reacted poorly to Lawrence winning because while Lawrence dominated the first half of the season, we were literally coming off of 4 Bimini wins in 5 episodes (or something to that effect) and it felt like their momentum was unstoppable but led to an anticlimactic finale. In terms of track record, Krystal is obviously the Lawrence of the season, not Kitty: won early on, but then faded into the background, while still being favoured by Ru, even when doing mediocre. Just thinking of the producers sat around the table after the finale going "I don't understand! Why aren't they happy?! They wanted a skinny fashion queen to win last season, and that's what we're trying to give them!!!" is almost enough to make me laugh out loud... Are they that clueless?

I think the problem with having Ru Paul, who is very loud and proud about being American, judging international seasons is that he shows very little interest in actually engaging with that country's culture and references (outside of corny British stereotypes). British drag has very different origins from American drag...it's not so much about the glamour than it is about the performance and comedy. Each countries version of drag is valid of course but if you are having a UK based season then as a judge it should be your job to learn and appreciate that cultures drag or have a local talent do it (btw I think Michelle does have more of an appreciation for British culture and drag then RuPaul so it isn't as bad). River and Choriza were punished for not going with RuPauls American references and alternate queen's like Ginny Lemon, Joe Black and Charity Case are treated badly by the show. Drag race is sadly homogenising drag into RuPauls idea of drag (ironic for a show that is ultimately about inclusivity) and it's honestly so exemplified in Krystal's win....

@@LILFOC1 I totally agree. I wouldn’t want to discredit Krystal’s achievement either, she’s obviously a real talent but she definitely exemplifies a newer generation of UK queens whose main reference point for the art of drag since childhood has been RPDR. It’s a very Americanised style of drag - “fashion queens” were never a thing when I started going to drag shows in the gay village in Manchester 20-odd years ago! It was all about the performance. I grew up watching people like Danny La Rue and Lily Savage who are true examples of British drag, and I think both Kitty and Ella stay truer to that tradition than Krystal does. Which probably explains why RuPaul favoured her so much 😉

I do understand her winning with the idea that she did outperform both Kitty and Ella in the finale, but still this seems a little bit anticlimactic for me.. what does that mean for the franchise? does a queen who slays every single challenge lose against another who one ended up 4 times in the BTTM2 for example? i just wish they crowned whoever did the best for the whole season, not just one episode...

I just have to comment to praise some of these queens. First off, congrats to Krystal. She's a talented queen with an amazing future. Kitty was so lovable and fun T.V. I did want to take a second to speak on Ella though. She is perhaps one of the strongest queens we've seen in any franchise. She is one of the few queens to have won 4 challenges, and not only that but not a single one of them were forced by production. She simply did so well that she won nearly half the season. And even then was underestimated by the judges. Ella is a force of nature and if her edit hadn't been 'I'm boring', in order to make other queens stand out she would really be one of the fan favorites of the entire franchise.

The thing is, her story was not even that. I guess I am not the intended audience for this but I find someone who struggles to accept their sexuality until later in life and then revels in it far more empowering and relatable as a message than young people who were really always comfortable with their sexuality and had relatively accepting environments (in Kitty's place, very accepting).

My theory for one of the production stunts is as follows: both the spice girl and the commercial challenge needed an even number of queens. Spice girls are a 5-girl group so they probably wanted to make a girl group challenge on the top10 episode, but because of victorias injury they were forced to go from 11 to 9, so thats why they made the design challenge first, and then the number of queens was even - 8. But now they have two group challenges one after another both needing equal number of teammates, so the production was kinda forced into the double save of Scarlett and Charity.
@handsoaphandsoap
@handsoaphandsoap 3 жыл бұрын
Would also explain why they were okay with losing Veronica, they probably wanted her around for either of those challenges so they could give her a top placement or a potential win (as I’m sure she’d do well in either), but then she flops the design challenge and they have no choice but to eliminate her.

Starting to get the feeling that being a good dancer is a death sentence on drag race, just an excuse for production to throw you in the bottom to assure another girl goes home (ex: Electra and Vanity). Or save a girl who would lose who is a weaker performer by taking her out of the bottom.

And also I don't really get why they had to put Vanity in the bottom against Electra. Couldn't they just choose a different song, which would not be in Electra's wheelhouse so she wouldn't be able to perform it with just her dancing ability or stunts? Also, how clueless are the producers that they thought she would even do good in ,,moving up"? They knew she would pull a lot of stunts and they don't really go with the song so to my mind they could've really put anyone who deserved it in the bottom and not ruin Vanity's track record and give her the Tayce edit.

@@plokijm22 yeah, people do assume they are all the same race due to them all being hispanic. People can be straight-up ignorant about it, but I also think some non-intentional ignorance could be out of a place of not wanting to be offending someone. Calling a Hispanic person a white caucasian seems out of place if you aren't thinking about how Hispanic people from Spain are indeed white and caucasian, but I think that's only because the majority aren't, so I can see where people make that mistake, but I also wish people would think about it a little more than lobbying everyone that is the same type of way into only one thing.

So, I’ve said this before, but I’ll say it here too: I almost compare the 3 seasons of Drag Race UK to the three films in the Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy, in a way. The first season is like the 2002 Spider-Man, in that it's a good origin for this franchise in the UK, sets up a lot of great characters and storylines that we can follow pretty well with and relate to, and it also includes a lot of what we already love about other iterations of this franchise. It's not perfect per say, and some aspects of it haven't aged as well as others. But quite a lot of it still does hold up, all things considered. The second season is like Spider-Man 2. It continues a lot of what made the first season work so well, while including a number of its own elements that cause it to work pretty well too. There are new challenges thrown in there, new characters that we grow attached to and relate to in similar ways that we did the original season. Plus, just like Spider-Man in that movie, there's a bit of a stretch where our heroes are out of action for a bit, but they come back for more fight and save the day in the end. And as a result, we get what is probably everyone's favorite of this trilogy. And then this third season is like Spider-Man 3. There are a number of enjoyable characters and parts of the previous installments that are part of this one too. That said, it seemed like there were too many twists and turns that were thrown in this, a feeling of the whole thing being rushed together to give us so much of what we want without letting things happen organically, and too many obvious decisions by production that gives us a storyline that doesn't work as well as the other two. And as a result, we have a season that tried to be too much at once and came off like a jumbled mess in the end. So this film, just like Spider-Man 3, is often regarded as by FAR the weakest of the bunch. At least that’s my analysis anyway.

I want to point out that Choriza is white, but she's an inmigrant, which means she can experience xenophobia, but not racism. The whole Brexit thing has made it super hard for inmigrants in the UK and she did get a few xenophobic comments when the cast was announced. Her drag name is a pun on Theresa May who was very pro-Brexit. I think the show missed an opportunity to talk about this, just as they've talked about other social issues on different seasons and franchises. But instead, she was asked to use her accent as the bottom of the joke, which rubbed many people the wrong way (rightfully so). I really encourage you to look more into the whole Brexit thing. I feel like you didn't get the full scoop on Choriza's situation, but I do appreciate that you aknowledged that she was in a situation of disadvantage.

The inclusion of others only confuses the art form and creates division and unnecessary conflict. Sadly, the very toxic and radical transactivist community intimidated and harassed and issued countless death threats against Ru and the producers until they caved to this type of toxic behavior. I guess you don't know because you seem to be from North America, but in Europe Spanish people are not considered people of color: they're caucasian same as everyone else who's ancestors are from Europe. Sure, Choriza is an immigrant in the UK, but a white immigrant, same as Krystal who is Greek (although Krystal seems to be maybe second gen). It didn't even cross my mind that some people would see her as a person of color, and I know for a fact Spanish people don't see themselves that way.^^

Even queens that aren't my favorite, and even queens that are on the bottom alot or get sent home first. They have balls. Theyre tryng to change things for the better, trying to change gender sterotypes, making their art, etc. 🤷🏽‍♀️

I think Krystal deserves her win to like 60%. Honestly when RuPaul held this entire speech of "you were born for Drag" on Snatch Game I said to my friend "Oh she won't win, they can't let her win now, it would be too obvious setup" and she won... I think she had a very similar storyline to Lawrence and Bimini. Lawrence was really strong in the beginning of the season and fell off towards the end while Bimini was weaker in the beginning having to lipsync but had a better Trackrecord by the end of it. Same with Ella and Krystal. I just really disliked that it happened again

Technically, Victoria Scone is the first Cisgender Woman on Drag Race herstory, but not the first AFAB contestant. The tittle of fist AFAB goes actually to Gotmik since Kade is a transman and was assigned female at birth. But I totally get that people use AFAB all the time to refer to Cisgender Women who do drag, so it fits as well

I think Drag Race has less of an issue with PoC queens (they had several PoC winners, at least in the main US seasons: BeBe, Tyra, Raja, Bob, Yvie, Jaida, Symone and Sasha C.) and more an issue with queens whose first language isn't English, particularly latina and asian queens.
@andrewlocke6103
@andrewlocke6103 3 жыл бұрын
Y'all please stop using AFAB wrong. Yes, Victoria was AFAB, but she is a cis woman, which is more to the point here. Gottmik was also AFAB, but he is a trans man. Both identities are important to note, but the first here for Victoria Scone is that she's the 1st cis woman on Drag Race, not the first AFAB person.

Unpopular opinion: Victoria was heavily favored in the few episodes she was in. I'm a firm believer that she was going to be in the top for the first episode and that's why they had the top 2 lipsync. She was also safe in a dancing challenge where she sat in a chair the entire time.

I feel like the reason why the first half was so bad was because of UK2 like you said earlier. I believe that the production for the first half was trying to recreate the magic from UK2 for this season, and the season probably ended halfway thru filming. Think about it, why else would they put more time in the stories for the second half if they have no other content from the previous season to use? If they wanted to keep using UK2 as a crutch and use the feedback from that season, they’d continue this throughout the entire time if they had more content. Production either had no more feedback or just didn’t want to use it anymore in order not to risk making the season any worse.

I think what probably happened is that Ru might’ve seen the parallels between Charity Kase and Sharon Needles especially during the branding challenge and maybe acknowledging the surrounding drama around Sharon the past couple of years that have come out, gave Charity the boot once she got her moment. Plus she wanted a fashion queen like Raja to win the season although ironically Charity IS Raja Gemini’s drag daughter.

As much as I love Ru, this season showed again why he should stay out of european drag. Spain and Netherlands are so enjoyable because they have a host that gets the national specifics and the regional scene. If he really needs to still take over a european drag show, he can have Queen of Drags (somewhat the german drag race), because everyone would do a better job than Heidi Klum and her Toy Boys - but keep Conchita.
