Saw this 1972 Ford Pinto with a 2.3L 4 Cylinder Motor and a Turbo at Street Car Takeover, Martin Michigan, letting off around the 1/8th mile, and still giving a couple V8s a good run, including a Mustang, Turbo V8 240 and a C7 Corvette Z06

That's my car and I wanted to give a tremendous amount of thanks to whoever it is that did this video! I remember talking to you there but was busy with other stuff and didn't get to talk more. Also, not a Ford fan, but I can appreciate a cool car when I see it. The silver paint works well on this ripper. I'm really loving the big/littles hotrod stance, and the non conformist turbo four (Who doesn't like an underdog?) is the icing on the cake. Tastefully done, mate. 👍🏾

@@gavinvalentino1313 Well..perhaps ...from an idiots point of view, but the Pinto has a very good weight distribution. The driver is slightly rearward of the center of the car, if he has installed a racing seat its probably even back further than stock. The back seat pretty much sits on the rear axle. At launch even more weight bares down right on those rear tires adding bite.

I had a 1971 Pinto in 1975. It was my first car. My brother and I competed in everything from bicycles to cars. My poor little Pinto received a cam, headerrs, DP distributor, cold air intake, traction bars and of course some wheels. My car had the 2000 cc engine which was a beast. It was such a sleeper I have raced several cars with V-8's and buried them. The lightweight car would leap off of the line like you see in this video and everyone was trying to catch up all the way. I called it the "Mean Pinto Bean"!

@musicauthority674 Terrible street cars? 195/50/15 wheelset, a front sway bar, and KYB shocks and you have a big gocart that pulls nearly 1 lateral G. Very stiff unibody design, very light, near perfect front to rear balance, they are outstanding road cars. I built a 2.0 in the late 80's 160hp and I was eating V8 cars right and left. My early 71 was one of the original cars with the swaged fuel filler neck that was recalled and fixed. Those were the cars that caught fire in a rear end collision, the lack of rubber gasket between filler neck and fuel tank would tear loose and spark, that my friend is what the whole issue was. Anyway, this early 71 car has the clock spring hatch lifts and the light weight doors, this car weighs 1995 pounds.

@insolentstickleback3266 You are dead wrong, many Pinto's were recalled but ultimately not fixed. and there would have to have a ton of work done to the engine compartment because it was way too small both length wise and width wise. if you wanted the V8 to fit inside the engine compartment you needed to cut the dog house around the bell housing out. I remember seeing one without a grill so as to make room for the radiator. unlike a Vega where everything fits under the hood yes you needed to hammer the dog house out a little bite but no cutting required unless you wanted to install a big block engine. Had fun in the 70's with those little cars

I built the 2.3 in my '93 Ranger XL. Went from 97 hp to 435 hp and 410 lb/ft tq. I use it as a stoplight sleeper. It looks completely stock, other than the 17" 2003 Mustang Cobra mags I put on it. Trying to run it on the 14" tires was not happening. Edit: I'm in my mid 40's and I have a V-8 in almost all of my vehicles, and they range from 1938 to 1993, and that 2.3 was the cheapest and easiest build I've ever done.

@@tg2963 Chevy is now putting a 2.7 liter 4 banger in their 1/2 ton trucks in lieu of the 4.8 v8 which they used for years as well as the 5.3. The new 2.7 High Output is turbo charged and is putting out over 300 hp and 400 foot pounds of torque. Better HP than the 4.8 and better torque than the 5.3. Our company just bought the first one of these this week. Has a bit of turbo lag on take off compared to a v8 but still snippy after launch, haven't pulled a load with it yet and also interested to see if it will be a 250K engine.

They been doing it for a long time. there was a HOT ROD magazine. that had an article in it called 1000 HP for 1000 hours. where they built a 2300 2.3 L Pinto engine they balanced the rotating assembly and used forged Pistons put a cross flow D port head on it, with a high lift Long duration cam. and used a mechanical fuel injection from a Mercedes Benz and fabricated on to it and a turbo charger and ran it on the Dyno at 1000 HP for 1000 hours it was the cover article in the magazine. I believe that was in the late seventies, or early eighties. you could probably research it though HOT ROD Magazine and where Is live there are guys that build these engines. to use on the local NASCAR sanctioned circle track. they only allowed to do certain things to them per NASCAR rules. they can do light m machine work, they can use the D port head, they can raise the compression ratio. they can use an intake manifold with it certain part number. and a certain camshaft. and a 500 CFM Holley carburetor and a header. and they can get 300 HP out of them they are unbeatable on that track. and they have been doing this for quite a years. the 2300 2.3L Pinto engine is a hell of an engine. they are durable and make really good HP. they are one of the best four cylinder engines ever produced.

Back in the mid 1970's I worked in a shop where we did more than a few engine swaps. The V8 Pintos were just to front end heavy and the suspension couldn't handle the small block Fords very well but there was one swap that was outstanding. That was a V6 out of a Ford Capri. The V6 pumped out 128 HP compared to the Pinto 4 that was 89 HP so a stock Capri motor moved them along at a fairly brisk pace for the time. We did one owners car up with a V6 that was tweeked with a cam, pistons, intake, some headers and a few other goodies and it was cranking out around 170 HP. That little Pony was very spritely and took down more than one unsuspecting Corvette owner. Another nice swap was a Buick 230 aluminium block out of a Rover TC 2000 in a Vega and it was probably the simplest swap ever because the Vega had been designed to accept that engine from factory. With today's technology those cars would have been absolute killers yet still completely streetable.
