Here's the thing, though, and he even included this near the beginning (and I wished he addressed it more): Trump supporters *don't care.* Their definition of 'the swamp' is 'people who look down on me,' not 'people who are shady and corrupt, who accept bribes from special interests, who waste government money, who work against the purpose of their office, etc.' *Being a millionaire (even if by shady means...) is regarded as a virtue.* These same people often think that concerns about the environment and global warming are either hoaxes or at the very least, overblown, and standing in the way of jobs and the economy. I wish John would have focused on how these people are bad for Trump supporters self-interests--that might be a way of actually convincing people who support Trump that this is a problem. Otherwise, this is primarily just red meat for people who dislike Trump. That's fine, and not unimportant (it is worth pointing out all the crooked things the Trump administration and appointees are doing), but it's not very productive if we're going to try to convince anyone to think and vote differently. Anyway, that's my two cents.

Another important factor is tribalism. Everything is so politicized that the position a person takes on these issues becomes a way of signaling group membership and that tends to override whatever evidence and arguments are offered for and against a position.

Michael you have spoken the truth like a god. The millions on the right with their unjust or irrational views don't want to be questioned. For them elites are the college educated free thinkers who question or even mock them. That is their swamp. The rich folks who promise protecting their way of life in exchange of power or money reap huge benefits because of their shaky ethics. This is the reason why Trump doesn't speak a coherent, well structured and meaningful sentence because he doesn't have to, his support base doesn't listen to what he speaks, they already trust him. So while Jesus spoke in parables, Trump speaks in meaningless catchphrases.

Those educated Trump voters who are full of fear of loosing their status, these are the enemies of every conscious human. Not just for americans. @@shivamshukla6359 haha, thanks :). In general, I agree with you, though I would be a little careful, because it seems (and forgive me if I'm wrong here) you're implying people on the left don't have similar biases and faults. I think a lot of people in either 'camp,' tend to oversimplify things, tend to like slogans without having solid reasoning to back up their views, or even have times when they're hypocritical. For examples, we can look at things like students on college campuses trying to shut down speech they disagree with, the antivaxxers, and many people who can't defend their views when presented with counter evidence (here on KZbin you can find plenty of examples). I think everyone would benefit from examining their beliefs more closely and engaging more with people they disagree with in a constructive way.

Michael Reyes - If Fox presented logical and factual talking points that could be discussed point by point without denigrating, demonizing and disdaining others, it might be worth a listen. Except for the actual news, all the other shows are misleading and, ofttimes, outright lying propaganda machines. But their methods are those labeled by psych-social pros as closed channel thinking errors. This is the type of behavior used by those with narcissistic, anti-social, borderline disorders. It’s what bullies, abusers and those with criminal personalities use. It is purposely crazy-making, gaslighting to opponents and incites mob-like mentalities in adherents. If one was to break down the techniques, arguments and rhetoric of the respective hosts, the pathologies of each would not be that of a healthy individual. It is difficult to hear because the hosts are arrogant, indignant and appeal to the “good guy” (hence all others are bad guys trying to tear down all of us who are good) mentality in it’s viewers. They stir up this sense of self-righteous anger and it is a power feeling that’s difficult to let go of once one has been hooked by it. So I get why she wrote what she wrote. To listen to Fox for any amount of time makes you feel crazy because they pack so much garbage together and it rains down on your head with such emotion, it’s destabilizing. So many Dems either won or lost by a small margin. Even ojeda closed a large gap. He lost by 11 points but Trump had won his district by like 30 points. And the longer this goes on, the more unlikely it becomes things can be mended. Not to mention what might replace him. Everytime you think you hit rock bottom a new depth is bound to pop up.. Trump probably is the best thing that happened to the world in while. I do however feel for the group of people in the usa that is victim of all this. It's called anchoring. It's a basic part of human physiology. More or less Trump supporters feel like they are part of a group and when in a group humans tend to be more lenient towards fellow members and more harsh towards those who are not. This goes double for when a group leader tags another group as the enemy or in Trump's case, anyone he doesn't like. This is the reason you see a lot of double standards in this administration. It's a waste of time trying to convince these people of anything. They have to find out for themselves that the group they are a part of is hurting, not helping them. To be honest that might never happen as republican presidents Reagan onwards have all exploited a similar demographic which mostly includes those of low education in rural areas. The power of the smaller states in the US has only grown as bigger states like California continue to increase in population. In fact only 20 senate seats out of 100 represent high population states. The rest are low population that either lean or overwhelmingly lean republican. The recently passed midterms had 14 million more votes for democrats then republicans and they still lost 2 seats (so far). This really just drives home the point that America isn't a democracy, it's a republic first and a democracy second. My vote is worth much less then someone in Georgia. There hasn't been a republican president that's won democratically is some time now, reply on exploiting the republic based systems that favor minority rule. The only thing you can do is vote, everyone has to vote. The system needs fixing and this administration is a symptom of this. Potentially the worst we had so far.

Woman in power have been called sluts and whores since the beginning of time. It’s 2018, check yourself. Our president has been shown to cheat on his wives MULTIPLE times yet I’ve never heard him called a whore or slut, but hey he’s a man, so I guess it doesn’t matter.

All of these right-wing ideologies have nothing to do with cleaning out any bureaucratic swamp. If you listen closely, they are about values, conservative and deeply heritage based values versus progressive and science based direction. The guy being interviewed at the beginning gave you the biggest clue to their thinking. He said it is about removing the elite, so the conversation revolves around the working-man. By elite, he is referring to progressive thinking that challenges his dogmatic beliefs or values and because he can't keep up intellectually with the pace of this "elite", he calls for their demise. That is the quintessential reason for the uprising of nationalism and the far-right. They feel they are forgotten, because they refuse (or are incapable of) growing up intellectually to the standards of progress and enlightenment. It is essentially a child refusing to follow reason. Unfortunately for the rest of us, democracies are not yet protected against such things, so quantitatively these rotten ideologies can end up causing tremendous damage to the internals of societies through legitimate elections, hence Brexit, hence Trump, hence all the populism.

Never underestimate stupid people in large groups.
@AidenIlkhani6 жыл бұрын
@@plainlake Oh I never underestimate anything identifying as a group. The greatest intellectual accomplishment of any mind is to remain unsubscribed to any ideology or group - thus truly secular. The moment one subscribes to a group ideology, is the moment the individual is lost and democracy loses its integrity, because a healthy democracy depends on the individual maintaining its critical mind in opposing group-thinking and mob-mentality.
@drphdmd70646 жыл бұрын
@@AidenIlkhani I wholeheartedly agree. Once you say you belong to this or that, you have to do what they say and believe what they believe to maintain membership of said group. Unfortunately, political parties take advantage of the human need to belong to a group, it's programmed into our brains to forge groups and politicians on both sides use that to squeeze the people into groupthink.

They never made a secred about it. Rightwingers and leftwingers due to their opposing world views have opposing definitions of words like "the elite, the establishment, the swamp good/evil". I've been saying it and warning people from day one, but I was instantly attacked and silenced by an endless barrage of trolling, by people who from what I can tell just pretended to be leftwingers in order to manipulate as many leftwingers as possible into voting for Trump or at least to abstain from voting. To these right wing deplorables, liberals are evil. They voted for Trump because they knew exactly, by draining the swamp he meant getting rid of liberals in power, and turn the US into a right wing shithole. Same shit as in Brazil and other countries all around the world. People didn't just lose their freaking minds. No, the deplorables just played a long game, blaming liberals/leftwingers all the time, convincing people that they haven't become millionaires thanks to the "liberal agenda". The anti-PC movement was basically a collective effort by deplorables all around the world to fight against decency, empowering psycopaths, sociopaths, nazis, bullies and all the shitty people in the world. This shit that led to Trump has been going on since way before the refugee crisis. The Anti science movement convinced idiots that they know better than experts, after all they have all the conspiracy blogs to quote from. The nasties in the world just realized thanks to the internet that they are no longer alone and felt like they can now let their masks drop and show the world their ugly faces, because they are convinced that they are the silent majority who has been silenced by liberals for decades. These people just pretended to be nice, just because they thought society would punish them, but now that they see that they aren't alone they no longer feel afraid. The nazis have always been hiding amongst us, and every time a victim claimed to have had negative experiences people would always downplay it and act like they don't exist anymore. I'd even bet that many of them can in fact see that Trump is an idiot, they just love the fact that he's giving them a free pass to show their ugly side.

Those by the way were real swamps. 'Drenare la palude' ('drain the swamp') referred to the Pontine marshes on the outskirts of Rome. And the Italians succeeded in turning that 'swamp' into fertile ground. So the comparison to Trumps 'drain the swamp' is not very kind to Mussolini.

Love the red hat joke. Similar thing happened to me. My company's color is red, and I was wearing a company hat the other day, eating at a nice farm to table restaurant. When I put it on after standing up at the table, the waiter paused his conversation with my colleague, looked directly at my hat, and said, "Oh God, for a second there, I thought it was one of those red hats". We both laughed. My S.O. has told me not to wear any red hat when we are out.
