My issue I have is people saying “Drake is too old to be rapping about this” All while listening to 45 year old Pusha T or 50yr old Hov rap about selling drugs. Durk is 30 with god knows how many kids rapping about goin on drills. Future is almost 40 still rapping about being toxic. All these artists still have the same topics they did 10 years ago. They make music for people in their teens and 20s because those are on the ones who pack shows and stand in lines for new merch.
@Matthew-cx9gj2 жыл бұрын
Rapping about your past is not the same as rapping about your present. Pusha T and Hov are obviously over that period in their life. Lil Durk is not making his means off of drugs or organized crime anymore. It is in the past. Push is married and has a kid, Hov is married too. They have matured and progressed beyond that, and especially Hov has come to grips with misogyny and objectification topically. The issue is that Drake is rapping about his present. It is not about his past, it is him currently doing so. And yet, there has been zero progression pertaining to his lyrical content about his current life. There hasn't been a separation nor a shift in his present or past actions yet. There is no reflection, there is no new narrative spin or framing. It is just the same stagnation of not only his music, but his character as a person.

The thing is, and this isn't specific to Drake, is that there will always be a market for this kind of music. As a musician's fans grow out of a certain group of feelings, newer fans will grow into them, so there isn't really an impetus to grow, change or improve if the musician doesn't want to.

Drake’s best run was 2011-2015. You could even argue 2011-2016 from a pure success standpoint, due to Views, even though I personally don’t like that album and never have. However, TC/NTWS/IYRTITL/WATTBA was easily Drake’s hot streak. He was virtually untouchable despite his beefs, his features killed, and he controlled the industry in such a dominant way that he was the leading tastemaker in hip-hop’s sound and had a major influence on a lot of upcoming rappers’ careers in some form or fashion during that period of time.

I’ll say it like this, even if you’re not a popular rapper/singer/painter anything, it’s hard to recapture a certain period in your life , that made you write or sing or paint a certain way. You see life different based on the experiences you’ve been thru. The proof that drake realized this is that last tape Honestly, never mind and when he had that Jamaican phase. He felt he needed to reinvent himself and step outside the norm to get his name back out there. I’m not a drake Stan but I remember being a rapper in high school and hearing older kids from hs rap and I thought they were so talented and wondered why they eventually stopped rapping. It wasn’t just life taking priority, it’s the things you were going thru and the people you’re around that help me make the songs hot. When you’re no longer in that exact environment it’s harder to recapture that feeling to give to your fans. I’ve had people from hs surprised me and tell me how cold I was in hs and ask what happened. I try to write nowadays but I don’t have the same feeling. It just feels like task, like something I have to do, like hw or something. It’s just not the same anymore and that happens to all of us. Nobody thinks 4:44 hov is better than Reasonable doubt hov. Although his mind may be sharper, his knowledge base expanded and his rap skills improved people don’t resonate with the music as much. You need to be a certain amount of dumbed down for the masses but witty enough for them to think you’re a genius. It’s a hard place for any creative person to be in. This tape was exactly what I expect from drake. Not the best but not the worst…I mean he’s no Lupe level of rapper at all and has never been, he just creates experiences for us and drake’s experience has gotten old by now. I agree with comments saying he should drop some grown man music

Ay bruh the advice I’d give to you from one rapper to another. Stop trying to recreate a feeling from years ago in your art THEN in your art NOW. It can’t work. Never will. Like you said, the way your art sounded then was dependent upon where you were at in your life at the time. But you gotta move forward. The problem with us (as humans really) is that we’re always trying to go back instead of move forward. We’re always chasing nostalgia. And that’s the problem. That’s exactly why people prolly think 4:44 Hov isn’t better than RD Hov when if you look at the music honestly and objectively, he really is better and more mature, at that lol. We gotta stop chasing what once was and instead start chasing what’s to come. Gotta enjoy where you’re at now for what it is. So when you write, make sure you’re encapsulated in where you’re at in your life NOW. Cuz thas where your best art comes from anyway, where you’re at in the moment. Why you think Kendrick’s music always feels fresh and can draw you in every time time he drops? Cuz he’s never going back to chase an old feeling. He’s always creating new ones based on where he’s at currently in life. So basically stop tryn rap from the perspective of the old you. Be the new one and embrace him in your art.

Drake was actually putting some thought into the writing this time, that's why anyone is paying attention. You can't tell me he wasn't going off on some of these verses. Maybe that was a calculated move because 21 has some pretty good bars across the album. I feel like there were a lot of good elements put together on this album, it's more a patchwork collage than a cohesive album. You get these harmonies between some trap beats that don't really fit together but you get the sense they could have been their own joint. As far as the content criticisms, I'm not sure what Drake is supposed to be rapping about at 36. I don't really want to see the next phase of Drake because I really think it's going to be some kind of Pitbull arc where he just farms mainstream pop music and calls it "maturity". Do we really want to hear Drake rap about his personal life the way Kanye does? Do we want him rapping about drugs like Pusha T? Drake knows his lane. He's the guy who keeps his shit together. It's funny because lately, a lot of drake's old music (from if you're reading this as far back as so far gone) has been popping up on my gym playlists and to Shauns point about just playing old Drake is fucking true. It's LITERALLY the same content but everything from what a time to be alive (I'll begrudgingly include some cuts from views and more life) back to his first albums are all we really need now, and that's the unfortunate reality of being a Drake fan.

Drake reminds me a lot of Marvel and is a good study in Art vs Commerce. At some point Drake chose the money over the art and within the system we are in it's easy for that to happen. There is a conflation between something making a lot of money and being popular as a marker for high artistic quality, when really, it's more a thing where SOMETIMES those two things coexist within a piece of art. I'm sure the budget for Her Loss is bigger than Take Care, but is there even a discussion about which one is better? I think it's interesting to look at Drake's contemporaries like Kendrick and The Weeknd. Kendrick on every album is taking some kind of chance, he doesn't need to because his rapping ability is so good and interesting that he could just coast on that, but he doesn't. The Weeknd is closer to what would probably be ideal for someone like a Drake, where you still want huge popularity, but you aren't just looking at a template or an algorithm and are finding ways to combine mass appeal with artistry. Drake should be recognized for making HipHop the number 1 genre in the world, but in terms of artistry he has stagnated, and I would be surprised if he can hold on to his relevancy through the 2020's.

Her Loss is a breath of fresh air after the releases of CLB and HN. Take Care, NWTS, and IYRTITL are classics and anything that came after those drops were mid at best. We’re at a point in time where there is a potential major shift to occur in hip hop and mainstream culture. With YSL facing an indictment and what that entails for major music corporations pertaining to whether or not they are funding criminal enterprises as well as the violent deaths of the likes of Nip, Take, PNB, DOLPH etc. Drake is a pivotal piece of that potential shift. He chose to continue to indulge in placing heavy real violence on records with savage going as far as claiming he’ll “spin his parents” if he can’t get “him” .. at this point this content is redundant and real life dangerous to continue to push. We should pay more attention to Kendrick Lamar who is addressing family trauma and choosing peace over chaos. IMO.

In all honesty this just doesn’t matter and solely applies because he’s Drake and there really isn’t much to critique him on. Future is also old but nobody mentions his age while making similar music. Another thing, musically Drake released three really good albums in a short space of time. In all honesty, there might be a minute population that thinks CLB, Honestly Nevermind and Her Loss are mid at best. However there is an even larger portion that enjoys music for what it is with no desire to have an opinion on it that genuinely love these albums. That is why his streams are so high.

it’s not that it’s terrible. shawn even says he liked the album. it’s that it’s been the same old thing with drake for YEARS. keeping to the same subject matter, album after album, mix tape after mix tape, leaves the impression he hasn’t evolved. there’s got to be more going on in his life for him talk about other than his money, sexcapades, and disappointment in women, something more on his mind. at least, i hope so. it’s lacking depth and getting boring. i want to believe drake is so much more interesting than these stale topics he’s been on forever. he has the talent (and intelligence) to go beyond the surface level shit and create music with more substance that’s about more than sex and money. it sucks to say this and i will anyway: this is why he doesn’t get quite the same type of respect as j. cole and kendrick - he stays shallow. and i adore drake!

Y'know.... Drake is a tough artist to love. I personally think 2 things limited his potential as an artist (not as a money maker because he obviously has that on lock): lack of growth and not taking enough time between projects (maybe leave the cringe and creepy bars on the cutting room floor). I think this album was a rush to cleanse the taste of Honestly Nevermind from our palettes. Bringing in 21 was on line with KZbinrs who bring their dog out when they have to apologize for something. I've been listening to hip-hop and rap from about 2014, being a white dude from Australia I was super disconnected to the scene and had literally no personal stake in any of it. I was 14 years old listening to biggie, that evolved into people like MF DOOM, Aesop rock and now mainly listen to griselda, JID and contemporaries. I've tried listening to Drakes older projects, and honestly I really don't find much enjoyment from any of his back catalogue, maybe it just wasn't from my era? Her Loss is the first Drake project I'm genuinely invested in, listening to the songs that go hardest on repeat and forgetting the rest of the album. I would venture to guess that because of his status of a legend, the songs that go hard will be remembered until they grow stale, and the rest of the albums lack of substance will fall to the wayside once the production has stopped carrying the songs. Bitter is a bad look on most people, the only reason it doesn't seem so ugly on Drake is because he can cover it up in the millions of dollars he has made from his industry.

I fw Shawn’s videos heavy. He stays consistent with hitting topics without bias and being the real/gray character.

The albums have got better and better bro - people just falling into the cycle of not liking later albums because of how many have been released, nothing about production , flow lyrics, otherwise you would agree with the first statement. Drake is drake is drake

As I get older the way I view rap culture ig has slowly been doing a 180, like shit like rap beefs and or the lifestyle used to looks so cool to me, it even got to the point that I started to do dumb shit cause I thought it was cool, drugs, scamming, selling weed. But now after experiencing a lot of negative things in my life, for example, one of my friends got stabbed and bled to death over a girl. Experiences like this have really soured the feeling that I have towards a lot of rap music nowadays. I Just hope at some point these negative parts of the culture gets addressed by everyone, cause I only see it getting worst.

i’m starting to think drake has been hiding behind the weeknd, quinton miller, partynextdoor, the entire ovo camp and god knows who else this entire time.

I thought I was the only one that thought this album was ok at best. When I first heard it, I was like "meh, it's ok". Then I saw some people praising it so then I thought to myself that maybe I was just bugging so I gave it another listen and I must say it's still just ok at best lol. The thing I disliked most from the album were the lyrics. Gawd, IDK how to describe it but they were so basic and "corny", my goodness. There is only 1 track I like, which is Middle of the Ocean.

You turned on Eminem due to his age turning his lyrics outdated. Now drake. Wow.
