I think there were some other motivations behind it though. in my forensic science program, and i’m pretty sure every fsci program around the country, they mention the csi effect in virtually every course. how forensic science is displayed in the media and how media portrayal of physical evidence may sway jurors or other concerned parties to rely on just physical evidence (in this case the public), was particularly concerning in this case. not only was there a lot of bias from media bloggers, but even then the amount of people who didn’t bother to look up what the word “inconclusive” meant was quite impressive.

Even if Tory wasn’t guilty (and he is) he’d still be an accomplice for not turning Kelsey in to the police. So regardless of who shot the gun, both Tory and Kelsey deserve jail time because one of them shot Meg and the other one stayed silent. But I believe Tory shot her and the mountain of evidence +his conviction validates that opinion. Hopefully Kelsey gets hit with a perjury charge and is locked up as well.

Guns are notoriously difficult to get prints off of. They often have ridged surfaces that don't take prints well. Also, cleaning solutions used on guns makes it difficult for prints to stay on a gun. Unfortunately, CSI is just tv. It's not how forensics actually works. The thing about court is that jurors are allowed to draw their conclusions based on who they believe. They are instructed to bring their common sense with them. We've all been lied to. We know what that looks like. They clearly sat and listened to Meg and believed her. They also believed the defenses own witness, who said he saw Tori shoot. They also believed Meg's friend's initial statement, you know, the one from before Tori went on an intimidation campaign. Tori literally tried to bribe the women, and you just don't do that if you're innocent. The inconsistencies in their stories actually lend some credibility. If everyone was lying, it would be the same lie. You never get the exact same story from 3 different people who witnessed a traumatic event. That's not how human brains work. Regardless, one key fact was the same: Tori shot Meg. The end.

There was no doubt in the jury’s (collective) mind that he shot her. There’s doubt in *yours* but you weren’t on the jury. Personal opinion on if there was reasonable doubt or not is inconsequential to the case outcome. Personal opinion differing from the jury’s decision to convict doesn’t mean the law wasn’t followed. That’s it.

@Rap Philosophy The case law in most states is that an individual can be convicted based on the testimony of a single witness - if the jury believes that person beyond a reasonable doubt. The reason for that is that a lot of crimes happen in secret. Think of child sexual abuse cases. Those are rarely reported when there's still viable forensic evidence and there are rarely eye witnesses. But if a child comes into the courtroom and describes the abuse in detail and you fully believe her, the defendant can be convicted. Jurors are allowed to take and discard any testimony they see fit because they are the ones in court who actually witness the testimony. They can see the body language and hear the tone of voice that you can't if you aren't there. For instance, if a victim comes in and testifies that nothing happened, but the jury can see that the victim is cowering and clearly afraid of the defendant in court, then they might convict based on the victims demeanor in court, her prior statement to police that she was strangled by the defendant, photos of the injuries which look like fingermarks on her neck, and the fact that no one else had the opportunity to do commit the crime except the defendant. They also may not. None of this is ever as clear cut as anyone tries to make it.
