Glad Elliott is seeing the light. His frequent bouts of bitterness had become wearisome and unpleasant. That said, most of the people who hate him for it have NEVER been where he is. To go from a trailblazer and a true architect of a major industry to someone that is barely recognized by newer movers and shakers must be a helluva knock to his professional pride and sense of self. Salute to him for staying in the game and for acknowledging the need for him to move and speak differently. Show how contributors to hip hop culture can age with grace and dignity while still being impactful in the space. 💜

56:00 I think Elliott's analysis of Drake's mindset is spot-on. Drake is undergoing narcissistic injury to his ego; he believes the industry is conspiring against him and that he is uniquely qualified to expose & destroy the industry. Drake doesn't just compare himself to Michael Jackson & Prince, he wrote that he will succeed in his lawsuit because they were unstable & he, Drake, is not. What's fascinating to me is that Drake genuinely doesn't seem to discern the real difference between him and artists like MJ & Prince. MJ & especially Prince were able to survive in opposition to the industry because they had their artistic ability + music relationships + community to fall back on. Add in the fact that UMG can easily portray Drake as unstable & dangerous. The internet & Kendrick have the laid the framework out - how much more behind the scenes dirt does UMG have on Drake? Kendrick was right: Drake is paranoid & spiraling.

Very well said. To compare himself to those two is to greatly over estimate his talent and importance. He doesn’t understand that he’s the conversation due to his longevity and number of albums he’s put out not because he’s actually a great rapper. He’s good but his level of talent isn’t even enough to compare himself to Lionel Richie. No disrespect to him but he wasn’t mj or prince.

Here’s my take on lyrical hip hop. I don’t think being the best lyricist will be enough to takeover the top spot. We’ve seen great rappers drop great projects last year but haven’t garnered the respect that they deserve. I think not only do you have to have the bars to back it up but what does the music sound like? Transitions, instruments, bridges, hooks. People like Kendrick and Tyler not only rap their ass off but the production and quality of song also checks all boxes. That’s my take though. What yall think??

You spoke nothing but facts. And cadence and personality within the bars has a lot to do with it. Those tools help to make your bars more believable. And having knowledge of the rules within poetry, which Kendrick obviously excels at, REALLY helps with making your bars more memorable.

110% Support for Elliott. Cam wasn't a good target and I'm glad they sorted things out. That said, journalism as an institution in the US is effectively dead. Political, Hip Hop, all fields. Traditional media just sucks corporate dick and most of the "new media" personalities are interested in hype, clicks, and entertainment above all else. Unfortunately it's just the way of the world. If real journalists want peoples attention they have to find a way to sugar coat the medicine. Rough times.
@culture8815 күн бұрын
Which is why it’s so important for journalists with strong ethics, skills, and expertise to continue their work. One could say the same about organized leftist movements in the US, but those involved continue on because it all is vitally important (journalism, organization, etc).

That "Can't Get Right" snippet by Lefty Gunplay def slaps. That "UCLA/Council'" idea that Dj Hed talked about sounds dope. Young artists need real a&r'ing and to be properly produced nowadays. Sounds like Lefty "accidentally" revealed Kendrick's involved lol. Good lineup with Dj Hed, Jason Martin, Mustard, Terrace Martin and Mike & Keys, who were all tapped to participate. They need to bring in people like Ty Dolla $ign, Thundercat, Anderson Paak. People who understand melodies and tge importance of hook writing. The west has plenty of young talent and beatmakers (not real producers), but the hook work, outside of guys like Kendrick, Tyler, RJ and a few others, is lacking.
