Always go to Japan with someone who speaks Japanese and knows things that tourists would never know. I've been there three times, twice with my aikido dojo and once with a Japanese girl from our dojo. Incredible country.
@5hadow5talker3 жыл бұрын
Hello fellow Yognaut and aikidoist! Did you go to the Honbu dojo or...?
@bitspacemusic3 жыл бұрын
@@5hadow5talker I was there in 2013. We spent more time at the old Iwama dojo. We do the traditional flavor of aikido (Morihiro Saito).
@5hadow5talker3 жыл бұрын
@@bitspacemusic ! So you went to see Hitohiro Shihan (Saito's son)? I did Iwanma for a period of time but now I'm mostly Aikikai. ...wait. Are you a student of Hendricks Shihan...?
@bitspacemusic3 жыл бұрын
@@5hadow5talker No, we trained with Inagaki sensei. Saito's son is not with Aikikai and hasn't been for ages, if ever. I have trained with Pat many times when she's been to Sweden, but I'm not her student. We follow the old Saito curriculum, none of the new stuff his son has been making up. It's funny how the two dojos are both right next to the Aiki Jinja, but the Saito students aren't welcome there. So much politics.
@5hadow5talker3 жыл бұрын
@@bitspacemusic Sorry I think I didn't explain myself. When you said you went to an "old Iwanma dojo" I assumed it was Hitohiro's because that would have been one of the oldest. Yes he has and always is Iwanma because of his father. Sorry for some reason I assumed you were American because most Yognauts are American or UK based. I'm neither but sorry to assume. Yeah I mean with Japanese martial arts and old men honour it's all honour and pride... so it's sad but not surprising.

Its so weird that he says all the food was bad. A friend of mine went and said all the food was great. There are whole styles of food I want to got to Japan to get a chance to try. Part of me can't help but wonder.. was it because he was looking for vegan food?

No matter the country or place, you need to know where you're going. Ideally know someone that lives there and can advice you. I visited Paris knowing no one (third European city with the best food) and only ate the worst food
@RubelliteFae Жыл бұрын
Some of the best foods I've ever had were during my 4 years in Japan. But there's no way I would have found out about most of them on a short trip. For one thing, food there is very seasonal. For another, you're not going to really experience the folk culture-including cuisine-unless you go to smaller places outside of the metropolises. I mean, you can definitely get good food in big cities, but how you going to know where to go if you only go to touristy places and don't make local friends? All of that aside, vegan food in Japan is called something like "Buddhist food" and most of it is purposely not particularly exciting. I've not eaten mammals for going on 2 decades (I mean, occasionally on accident, of course), except during my time in Japan. Not only did the beef taste good *never liked beef in the US), but the pork didn't make me ill like back home. And when I say the food is good, I don't just mean restaurants that make one type of thing in a couple styles very well, but even the convenience store food is great: onigiri, fried chicken, meat filled buns, croquettes, hiyashi chuka (kind of a Japanese version of Vietnamese bún). The convenient store sandwiches were pretty boring, but much more practically portioned than in the US (i.e. not slathered in meat & salt) and the sweets are usually much less sugary as well. But that's just the convenience stores. There's too many regional cuisines & seasonal dishes to possibly go through them all, but two types of restaurants stuck out as odd at first, though. Their bakeries are based on French patisseries with a Japanese twist (e.g., melon bread & red bean bread). It's impossible to describe the vibe, but it's just very different to what I'm used to from a bakery. The other was how delicious the cheapest food, "beef bowl," was. People in these restaurants aren't usually cheerful or anything. It's often a few businessmen sitting on their own scarfing down some quick cheap food and maybe a beer on their lunch break. But it was shockingly good. Oh shit, I just remembered also there was this cute little crepe stall near my place. They serve them in cones and besides having things you'd expect like chocolate & banana, or ice cream, there were also some odd ones that were surprisingly good like tuna salad. Oh and that reminds me of how crazy and crazy expensive the pizzas were. The standard, cheap pizzas were corn & canned tuna and shrimp & mayonnaise. 😆 God, this is bringing back a lot of memories. I could go on and on. TL;DR is, there's definitely some strange things, some delicious things, and some bland things. But if you're limiting the things you'll try, you're going to be missing out.

yeah i have long wanted to go to Japan but over time and seeing videos like this about going there it has gradually dawned on me that it would be a VERY expensive vacation to a culture that isn't exactly going to embrace me like in anime and would probably break all my fantasy dreams of how I imagine Japan to be, to be depressingly replaced by brutal reality of bad food and chubby maids. I went to Beijing and that was fun but again, you discover that the Forbidden City is not all that old because of how often it's burned to the ground and been rebuilt. And that the parts of the Great Wall you can walk on are reconstructed because they original bits are long strips of rubble. And like Lewis' experience in Japan, weird latrine toilets if you aren't in a tourist location. With a little old lady handing you a length of crepe paper to wipe with.
