Loved the walkthrough. I've a niche interest in how the sailors lived outside of their battle stations and various duties, so seeing the two different types of bedding on display was a nice touch.

Thank you Dr Clarke, My farther spent the last two year's of the war on HMS TOWY K294 radar operator.As a 6 year old he explained the handling characteristics of a river class, as designed like a duck to ride over the waves not through them which give them a fairground feel that not everyone could handle.Everyone slept in hammocks you just had to judge getting in and out apart from that you had a good night's sleep or day's sleep with all the rock and rolling.They got a new captain hugh valentine King his first order was to aquire any scrap metal from the dock side put it in the bow and fill it with concrete, suddenly the War became personal and with a sombre feeling the crew carried out the order.They where a tough go anywhere ship with tough crews that liked them.

Do you think that one of the reasons why these vessels last so long is the quality of build? Yes, they were built to merge in standards. But the yards that were building them knew that the sailors would be going into harm's way. Corners were not cut, sloppiness not permitted?
@DrAlexClarke15 күн бұрын
There was also a pride thing, those in the yards took a lot of pride in their work, in that they were producing the ships for their sailors.

Regards hammocks, I'll go with that option too... Tp paraphrase an ancedote from (i think) the cruel sea "our flying boat is amazing, it could land on wet grass." "Yes, but when it arrives, there will already be a flower class. And it will be rolling"

hi doc, the reason i comment on old vids is to kick the algorithm, i do not expect a reply although i appreciate it when you do. i am glad that you showed the dock sequence. Most navy officers do not get to see that. Having hauled and launched a lot of vessels this size i can appreciate the feelings of the dock gang. you get a bad reputation if you loose a visitor, much less a renowned professional.

So far as I could make out the photo of one of Titanic's piston engines, there was one small cylinder, one bigger one and two slightly bigger than that. I thought that the equal sized pair together made up the low pressure cylinder. This was to avoid having one of a very large diameter. ps. You are able to explain what it is you are talking about while we look. That is because you understand the subject otherwise it would be rather awkward. It saves me guessing what is what.

An excellent deep dive and tribute into a very important class of warships for the RAN ! I love how, in the overhead shots, you left in Drach’s shameless attack on a local tree 😂😂

One post service life I think Frigates would typically be good for after a conversion is research ships like Jaques Cousteau's converted mine layer. Considering those being retired now tend to already have landing areas and some with hanger spaces.

I served on Diamantina in 1977 as an engineroom artficer. I took super 8 movies of the steam engines operating while I was on watch. I can send them to you if you want.

Great, a year of construction, or be more specific a year of engineering, now that would be interesting! This could be followed with a series about comms, radar, and ASW detectoring. (I am a Radio Ham!)

UBS Mayu Museum Warship looks good in her photos. The front part looks somewhat stock. The rear deck gun area looks like it was replaced by a helicopter deck. She is in a dry berth but well painted.

39:14 When you say "24 in this space, 36 in that space" would all of hem have been there at once, or would some of them always be o watch, meaning more space available in the room at any given time?

I think something like a more modern version of the USN Brooke Class Guided Missile Frigate. A main gun, some SAMs, ASW Torpedos, a CIWS, and a ASW Helicopter. That would be the just better than bare bones.

Like the walk arounds but would prefer some on site talk pointing out things. You can still edit over too if needed. Also on the swearing as you pointed out not only is it different country to country some are proper wooding in context in all countries. In the US the female dog is one of the bad words but if talking about actual dogs, it is always the proper word. The British sensitivity to what keeps you alive by being pumped through the body is quite extreme when someone describes anything covered in some of it, in the USA it is every day civilized talk when talking any scrape, cut or break. It is also used to describe taking a blow that either is a set back or a learning experience. Of course half your Governments leadership is in the names are curse words to the USA as titles based on bloodlines is a curse to us. Markel can never again be a Citizen of the USA as it is Constitutionally banned as she took such a title. One of only two ways to permanently void birthright Citizenship in the US. While I respect trying to protect the young ears, sometimes it is still context more than the word itself. Another like that is the Biblical word for donkey and if it is used that way there is nothing wrong with it but if used for a person or a human body part there often is. Take care and hopefully with your travels you can help cross educate others that words are rarely actually bad but the use of them in some context are instead.
