I’m a Belfast Giants fan, and the EIHL only released the other week that they’re having a panel who will watch games so too look out for punishable hits etc. After the hit on our player on Sunday a ban was expected but typical DOPS have bottled it again. It’s laughable

UK fan - Marjamarki (offending player) should be banned two games for the hit. He's a repeat offender and has already received a suspension this season which should add a game or two. So 3/4 overall.

I'm a Dundee Stars fan (so I don't have an affinity towards either team). However, like many have said if you were going on NHL standards that would have been a suspension as it was a blindsided hit and looks like it was intentional. However it's the EIHL and DOPS are about as useful as a chocolate teapot so it doesn't shock me that this would go unpunished. Glad to see someone outside the UK talking about this though, might bring more awareness to how dire DOPS is.

I think you said it perfectly about the hit. The player had time to crouch down to go for a body shot or not even hit him at all seeing as he was passing the puck away. It wasn't a "bang bang" type of play, he had the time to assess the situation. He made a poor judgment call to not crouch and go for a body check knowing the player is crouching down and in a vulnerable position. I think it's a definite 1-2 game suspension. Love the content as always dude! And shoutout to the EIHL legend himself, Biznasty.

Props for promoting the EIHL. It's a ten team league (I think it should be 12, at least) with playing quality around about ECHL or CHL level. It may not be as widely reported as other sports, as a result the fan base is small - but it is rabid. For example, for my home town team in Coventry, we have fans from Birmingham, Solihull, Leicester, Nuneaton/Bedworth, Rugby - basically, every municipal entity within a 30 mile radius of the Skydome Arena. There are even a couple of Blaze fans from Nottingham, shamelessly doing the dirty on the Panthers. I'm pretty sure that's a similar story for the other teams in the league. The problem, I think, is that we don't have much of a media presence outside the streamed games and the TV coverage from FreeSports (they do a great job, by the way), especially the printed media. I'm not sure if Powerplay magazine is still going, but if we have something like that, and it's widely available outside of the traditional way of selling mags like these (they normally get sold only at rinks on game days) this could help broaden the game and its communications channels. Then, there might be less confusion in interpreting what constitutes a dirty suspension-worthy hit. I would gladly support the return of something like Ice Hockey News Review, or even Ice Hockey World (the latter title was established in 1935, predating The Hockey News by 12 years).

I was at the Guildford vs Sheffield games, before the cross check to the face the Steelers player got a clean hit, sticked the Flames player in the back and got a leg tap and a few words for it, moving up the ice words still passing and the Steelers plays hits out on the legs again to the Flames player who turned round to confront the Steelers player, after a few words the Steelers player cross checked to the face

As a big fan of the Cardiff Devils, clearly that's a suspension and I am also annoyed that it wasn't. Majermaki as a player is good, but he likes to take risks and sometimes they end up like this. As a result he is our (Devil's) most suspended player this season I think and deserve further suspension for this. Makes us Cardiff fans look bad but I think the only reason some of us are tired of people complaining about it is because we've had plenty of our own players badly injured from plays similar to this that weren't suspended or only given a game. It's a shame that this year the league has grown leaps and bounds from a media and business perspective but not from officiating as the only adjustment has been a central review system for live games that has been trailed since new year. Official ruling on the last (and worse) hit - NO BAN!! "Significant body to body contact and the head was not targeted". I have NO idea what they are watching to reach that decision. So pretty much guaranteed that Belfast will just send Bobby Farnham or Mike Pelech after the Cardiff player when they next play each other, that's not until March 28th.......

I would say the main weakness of the EIHL right now is the officiating and refereeing. There is no consistency like you said.

It's a headshot. Yes the guy getting hit is crouched, but he's not moved at the last second. The hitter has had him lined up and could adjust, but targets the head regardless. As for the communication, it's ridiculous. Just make an announcement to say why this isn't needing supplementary discipline. The radio silence causes more problems than it solves.

Also I think it would be good to hear from DOPS for both suspensions and actions that are not suspensions. If they seriously believe it's not worthy of a suspension they should produce a video to justify why they believe this to be the case.

NHL fan here. If there is fighting then this is a 2 minute elbow, and then he will be challenged the rest of the game. If he is a player and not a superstar he has to drop the gloves. If he is a finesse played then the heavyweights have to fight for the teams. they might have to fight several games. The tone of future matches will be more fighting. In todays NHL anti fighting league - major penalty for blow to the head and dangerous play. 3 game suspension and fine. I think the only deterrent today is suspensions , fines

Hey just an FYI, New Zealand is basically COVID free but the NZIHF is running a less financially risky version (in case the situation changes) of their league with a 2 conference system of North & South Island conferences. a little tricky with 5 teams but still it's hockey. AIHL doesn't seem to be operating this year.

Great video you should come and work for the DOPS. Unfortunately media coverage for the EIHL and all hockey in the uk is pretty much non existent on the major sports platforms over here (bbc, sky sports and BT sports). So it's good that post 2 post is covering this. Hopefully someone at the DOPS watches it.

It's consistency at all of the decisions that has the fans pissed. Look at any coach interview over the last few years and they will nearly always comment on decisions made by the ref. Unfortunately EIHL league does not want to invest in training for officials.

Just go back to the Fretter v Goulakos hit you reviewed a while back. Refs did nothing on the initial hit and Fretter took matters into his own hands after been hit 4 or 5 times from behind in previous games. This hit changed DOPs entirely

The guy who hit the person in the head by the boards should be suspended at least 5 games, more if he has a history of hits like this. I mean, the NHL suspends people 3 games for spitting so...

Devils fan here - Marjamaki absolutely should have a ban for that. Guy I work with was at the game and they were all saying 'Yep, that's a ban right there' and no-one was arguing against it. DOPS needs to sort itself out. If that had happened to one of our players, we'd be pissed too.

As a Giants fan, I hadn’t actually seen any chatter about this, but I really only follow the teams social media, not the fans. That said, I think it’s a really careless play, and Marjamaki should play better than that. I’m not mad, I’m disappointed. I expect better. The game is moving on, and if all you have to offer is headshots you’ll be out of a job sooner rather than later.

Im a Giants fan and yes Goodwin was crouched down as when he plays thats his natural playing position but there should be a suspension for the hit, it’s also not the first time that the guy who hit him has had a run in with the DOPS and the Giants specifically as he slew footed a player around the beginning of the season and got a 2 game suspension for that. The DOPS are very inconsistent as are the referees within the league and its going to take someone to get seriously injured for them to become consistent untill then the DOPS will stay the way it is

I support the Glasgow Clan in the EIHL, so it doesn't involve my team, however it is a huge talking point throughout the league. Before I give my opinion, I want to make people aware that the EIHL recently made changes to their process, with a "situation room" being introduced who watch every game live and will relay any incidents which should be reviewed to DOPS, amongst other changes. This was introduced to try and improve the DOPS process. Now, regarding the hit, how a suspension hasn't been given is shocking to say the least. The offending player is a repeat offender, and it is a blindside hit with the principle point of contact being the head. Very similar to the 2020 Winter Classic incident with Corey Perry and Ryan Ellis, and Corey was given a 5-game suspension. If DOPS in the EIHL was competent, this would have been resolved and the right punishment would have been dished out, however DOPS are awful. They were completely silent throughout December, and they only sprung back to life in January, then this happens, and they've gone radio silent on the matter. It's a complete and utter joke!

Giants fan frustrated again by the lack of a transparent decision on this. I think its simply that we do not feel our players are safe and this goes for all our players in all EIHL teams. The quality of our league is in the close competition we have -and it only takes the loss of a few good players to put a team under real pressure.

The eihl are famous for giving harsher suspensions to the smaller teams than the so called bigger teams thats the simple reason jones gets banned and marjamaki is allowed as a repeat offender to get away with plays like this on a regular basis it really does make the league a bit of a joke league throughout europe!
