I love Bella talking about feedback online being a "if I don't see it, it doesn't exist," and then cut to Christina Ricci doing a big sister, "yes, and you keep doing that," nod towards them from across the table! So sweet. And what a stacked table!! For the immense talent represented, it was refreshing to see how supportive everyone was to each other's experiences.

Christina is horrified about what she went through being a kid in Hollywood and how brutal it could be even without social media. So she recognizes how hard it must be to have zero privacy. I guess the only way is to disconnect and ignore everything.
@falltowinter

@@xamalion7334 exactly - and she saw how brutal the internet could be to celebrities before anyone could've really anticipated it. The internet only started to be widely used (especially by predatory paparazzi) when Christina was around the same age that Bella was when Bella started Game of Thrones. Christina's compassion towards younger actors was hard earned but still really refreshing. Some people just shrug and say, "I survived it, what are you whining about." I love that Christina's heart didn't harden like that.

Too bad that’s not how it works and the world will never let certain people remain ignorant to their superficial standing…plus tbh Christina has no clue what it’s like to get the type of appearance based backlash that Bella received, so it comes off as a little disingenuous and condescending, even if she meant well. Christina mostly gets the exact opposite commentary (people saying she is unique and beautiful looking versus “weird & unattractive” like Bella is told). Also poor Bella already admitted that she saw the horrible things that were said about her online..so even if she doesn’t look, she can imagine. I’m sure there’s people who say things to her IRL as well, but she might just be more sheltered than most non-famous young people who could relate to her.

It actually hurt me that Bella saw all the shit people were saying when they were casted. Like of course they did, they were on social media, but to hear Bella acknowledge it is just so sad. People can be so cruel. Bella has all of Ellie’s characteristics (young looking, brown hair, white) so then not having the exact same bone structure is an absolutely insane thing to be upset about. And look at what an awesome performance they gave. It was Emmy worthy, although I’m still rooting for Rhea Seehorn this time around. With succession and better call Saul out of the way for season 2 and 3, I can see them getting it for sure.

@cjtrules1

Funny how the characteristics you list are all nonessential for someone playing someone else. Gender and race swaps happen ALL THE TIME and when they work it is because that individual has the intangible traits. Is it important to still try and get someone who looks physically similar? Sure, but there are other things that can make or break a character too. I found Bella's acknowledgement of seeing the online reception of their casting very humanizing. Unless you are well into adulthood, you are most likely connected in some way online and I think it is inevitable to see comments about yourself.

‘One of the greatest actors of all time’!? Where on earth do you get the evidence for this? JS is a fine actor but you seem to have bought into his self-serious ‘I, the great actor’ schtick. He delivers a very plausible account of Kendall Roy’s manic-depressive personality, but how many lead roles has he played besides that; has he tackled the great classical theatrical roles on Broadway or the West End? He may become one of the greats but so far he hasn’t had the track-record and it is far too early to tell.

@@johnricercato740 Firstly, the original poster prefaced their statement with "I think," meaning it's just their opinion that Jeremy Strong is one of the greatest actors and they recognize that. Secondly, nobody is trying to claim he's "one of the greats" - they're just saying that he IS great, schtick or no schtick. The idea that an actor has to tackle the "great classical theatrical roles" on big stages like Bway and the West End to prove that they're talented is an antiquated way to judge a great actor. Don't get me wrong, I love classical theatre and acknowledge the complexity of those legendary roles, but if we're talking about acting as an artistic skill and not just someone whose name will go down in history as "one of the greats," Jeremy Strong will never need to play one of those roles. I think he already has, through Kendall Roy. He portrayed Kendall with an emotional depth that is larger-than-life yet undeniably real and natural, which is the impossible task of every classical actor when they get onstage. With Succession's endless Shakespearean qualities, who's to say that Kendall Roy isn't up there with the famous theatrical characters, tragic heroes, and morally complex figures just because it hasn't been written into history yet? I honestly don't know what to make of his "schtick," but it's worth noting that, in this interview in particular, he's very open about how challenging acting is and despite his seriousness, he's not trying to seem like some great actor. Sorry for the paragraph, I see where you're coming from and respect your opinion, just wanted to share a counter-argument.

@@lexiebrent7090 Not sure whether you read the post I was responding to? ‘I think he is one of the greats’ as the OP had id sounds rather like ‘trying to claim he is one of the greats’! Secondly, I didn’t cite merely the great classical roles, but referred to leading roles generally. He just hasn’t as yet the track-record to be considered great - and however well he played KR (and he did an excellent job) the role was far simpler than you appear to realise. It was essentially: Kendall is on the up, gets hubristic, falls down and into depression, rises up again.(Repeat ad infinitum) It wasn’t as complex a role as that of Tom, and nor did it require the sheer power that the role of Logan demanded.

The writing and editing of the show let the audience bond with Ellie along the same progression that Joel does. First the toughness, then the smarts, then some moments of wonder in episode two, then some brilliant stuff at the end of episode 3 starting to show real range and depth. (Note Ellie's demeanor while she waits for Joel to make his decision about her after arriving at Bill and Frank's. Making herself as unobtrusive as possible, actually obeying his "stay here" for once, moderating her tone, mimicking his "I can't believe I'm doing this but OK let's get to work" exhale - she's not perfect at reading Joel but she's well on her way for knowing him only about 48 hours.)

Excellent host. Quietly personable, well-prepared, and had interesting questions. And this group of actors melded very well. (Sweet of Jeremy Strong to mention Brian Cox as one of his favourite sparring partners - BC has been a bit outspoken about JS’s method, but Jeremy nobly didn’t let that influence his opinion.)

I feel like Cox has always been hugely enthusiastic about Jeremy (and he is again in the most recent "Actors on Actors" with Emily Blunt), he just also admitted that his method is not the same as Jeremy's. But he has said many times how much he likes and respects Jeremy and how talented he is. I just think sometimes reporters have latched onto Brian saying he personally works differently to create a drama that isn't there.

I love this kind of show. So much talent in a same room and so many different paths in their respective careers, age gapes and experience, just sharing their common passion for acting. At least a truly interesting way to allow actors to speak their mind about their work and not the classical entertaining TV show with a 5 minutes race for promotional purposes.

I still can't get over Jeremy Strong's mesmerizing performance in Succession. As I watched, I couldn't stop thinking that literally no other actor would do as well as he did to play such a complex character like Kendall. In my opinion, the series certainly established him as one of the best actors nowadays. I hope he gets more recognition for his relentless talent and takes home his second Emmy.

Humor has never played a huge part in Ricci's performances throughout her career, but she's always shown the ability to be hilarious in a unique and non-traditional way in films like Addams Family, The Opposite of Sex, Pecker, Pumpkin, Anything Else, and now in Yellowjackets.. but her being funny in those roles doesn't mean she's not giving a serious and well rounded performance..

When Bella was talking about the fan backlash when they were cast as Ellie, I was hoping Sir Patrick would chime in after to talk about the fan backlash he and the TNG crew received back when they were announced. Because there was a _lot_ of it, even without the internet or modern social media.

Misty HAS been my least favorite - for storyline reasons, not actor reasons. But whoa did the latest season finale turn that around. The last moment with Walter had me really intrigued and Christina (and Elijah) just turned on a dime. Will they be as "ride or die" as Jeff is with Shauna? Great work by Christina.
