Like Emily Blunt said in this roundtable, the TV and film industry, especially (but not exclusively) Hollywood, is not for the faint of heart and you need lots of factors to succeed (networking, connections, experience, latent, mental fortitude, luck, right opportunity, etc.). And while I understand that the international recognition, particularly Hollywood, for Sandra Hüller’s body of works might be long overdue to you, just be grateful that it is still here at last because there are thousands of hard-working actors out there who are still waiting for the opportunity, the recognition, or their own big breaks but they aren’t as lucky (something America Ferrera also acknowledged in this roundtable). It is a cutthroat industry.

Hey, man. I'm Filipino, and I came here just to express my admiration for Sandra Huller's performances in both films. I've never been so mesmerized by a European actress whose performance made me research her online. LOL She's a breath of fresh air. I know her winning the Oscar best actress is a long shot, but I just want her to get it and upset the other strong nominees' chances in that category. Good luck, Sandra!

I love what Julianne told Fantasia about creative construction and the mythology of “getting lost in a role.” Just an incredible and healthy perspective on the craft of acting that legends like her would glean from decades of experience.
@kelvynification
@kelvynification Жыл бұрын
Whilst I agree that it’s important to discuss and provide context for someone new going into the field, plus that’s Juliann’s way of working, I do think that if someone decides to go ‘method’ and that’s their particular way of working - despite the mental challenges - and that they are prepared to accept the consequences of their actions then it’s totally legitimate. And it stops being a myth and becomes reality.

@ThePerksdeLeSarcasmeSiorai Жыл бұрын
Well. Julianne Moore is absolutely right and pragmatic about the need to deconstruct from your characters, especially when it comes to method acting. Like Sandra Hüller, she also has experience in theater acting so she might’ve learned how to do so or else, she would go crazy. Here are the dark examples: • Marion Cotillard, the actress who won Best Actress awards (including Oscars) for portraying the late singer Edith Piaf in the 2007 biopic movie La Vie En Rose said that she sought therapy after that movie because she was haunted by the method acting and the toll it took on her mental health for months. • Meryl Streep also said that she completely abandoned method acting which she used to portray Miranda Priestly in the 2006 film “The Devil Wears Prada” after trying to live like her character and isolating herself in her own trailer. She lamented and concluded that the entire experience was destructive to her well-being. • Natalia Portman mentioned that playing the hallucinogenic ballerina / protagonist in the 2010 movie “Black Swan” took a toll on her mentally and physically so much that she wish she should’ve sought rehab before jumping into another project.
@kelvynification
@kelvynification Жыл бұрын
@@ThePerksdeLeSarcasmeSiorai Yes! It’s a huge ask if it’s put on you by a director or studio or peer pressure and as you so clearly list there are victims, some of their own desires. One should know how to pace oneself in every endeavor and if not - as I stated - be aware of the consequences when dancing with the devil. Sometimes it’s a high wire act without a balancing pole and a net but those daring performances - as dangerous as they can be - create some incredibly thrilling, enthralling, captivating moments that can only be produced when balancing on a knifes edge.

I am happy that Sandras first intervention was a compliment to América Ferrara. They are bonded by authentencity and they are so different in their unique training and aproach to the craft. A German girl, cold and unexpresive at the begining. Unbeliabeable what she did. She took the movie on her back and stand tall two hours and a halve. She's not only great but a new kind of actress. Okay great group first off but I LOVE that you guys included actresses from the big european (‘foreign’) films of this year, not just Hollywood blockbusters, I mean even then you guys included May December and The Color Purple when I’m sure it would’ve been very appealing for marketing/viewership to just look at the blockbusters only, a lot of respect for that, always good to give these films their due attention considering how few ppl see them in theatrical release and forget about them

@davidlovesfilmI saw an early screening and loved it, it received a standing ovation from the entire theatre at the end. It’s pretty much the same songs from the Tony award winning Broadway musical, the only difference is Fantasia doesn’t play both young and old Celie like she did on broadway. In the film she only plays adult Celie, so Fantasia isn’t on screen until Celie becomes an adult.

@davidlovesfilmWow! What movie did you see my brother? If you haven't lived or can relate to the cultural experience, get knowledge first. Same here, when i seen it, the applause was astounding. The movie was great. As a black man, i understood the universal themes, we as a people fight everyday in life and to see it that on screen and how joyous we always come through was great. Theres only so much you can put in a 2 1/2 -3 hr movie. .

@davidlovesfilm it actually does use more of the text from the book than the original. Besides they are 2 different movies. We see enough of our plight in movies, its time to show that in all that we go through as a people, we can still rejoice and that's what i enjoyed about this reimagining of the book/broadway version. And again, this version, ALL people can relate too. Also, no need to be angry brother, healthy dialogue is good. You cant put everything in a 2 1/2-3 hr movie, even the original took alot of liberties and left stuff out.

@davidlovesfilm Again, we will agree to disagree. I enjoyed the healthy dialogue. It's good that there are two versions of the book. There's stuff thats in this version that wasn't in the first version and vice verse. Same with the broadway play. Everyone did a great job with the musical numbers and acting was on point and i truly enjoyed that we get to explore Celie's imagination.

I really appreciated what Julianne said about the mythology of being lost in a role. It made me think of Evan Peters and his incredible portrayal of Dahmer. It was such a heavy and obscure role to play, so I could understand how dipping in and out of it would be difficult to do, but living in it and staying in that mindset 24/7 would definitely be destructive. He has come off as more reserved in interviews, so I'm glad he's taking a break and has mentioned he wants to eventually do lighter fare, which he deserves. Hopefully we see him in a comedy or something lighthearted soon.

Sandra Huller was masterful in ‘Anatomy of Fall’. IMO she should win all awards but she won’t as Acadamy has a bias towards foreign performances. Europeans are too cold for their taste so they will go for someone American and safe.

Are you sure? Last I checked, Emily Blunt isn't American nor is Carey Mulligan, who though not a part of this gathering, is considered a front runner for best actress. Or, are you saying the English aren't Europeans?

@@eme.261 Yeah it's crazy how incredible European performances are swept under the rug, yes it's acadamy mostly focused on American movies but so many gems are snubbed unfortunately. E.g: Last year's 'Corsage' Vicky Krieps was incredible in it, Isabelle Huppert for 'Elle' etc etc. I wish Sandra Huller gets the deserved attention from industry. She was so effortless in 'Anatomy of Fall'. Currently, Lily Gladstone is the frontrunner which was also an incredible performance, would not mind winning that one.
