I agree...I'm 67 and I've seen them all...beginning with Jimi Hendrix when I was 12 years old. When I saw SRV in Daytona Beach in 1985?, I was blown away. He was larger than life and he was LOUD...but it all 'made sense'. I've played guitar all my life and I'm a year older then SRV...but after seeing him I kinda gave it all up...he was THE master.

I'll respectfully disagree. If you've never heard 'Peace in the Valley' or any recordings of his final two concerts at Alpine Valley before his crash...he reached the heavens a few hours before he actually did. Even Clapton said after his set "How the hell am I supposed to follow THAT?" Check out Sweet Home Chicago, the last song he played with everyone. He so outclassed everyone and less than two hours later...he was gone

100% agree. The El Mocambo video and the Ustin City Limits performance literally stayed in my VCR for just about 10 years. If I was home it was playing. Particularly El Mocambo. If I wasnt home I could hear every lick in my head all day. Theres just something about that is visceral, raw, and a million other things. Lenny on that recording.. holy shit. @@paulpresto673 you have a valid point, but I think that he reached his pinnacle more due to Albert King. All are great and I don't think there is a "best", I think they were all the best at what they did. I wouldn't give up one for the other.
@paulpresto673
@paulpresto673 4 жыл бұрын
@@MrDevildog0321 It's true that Albert King was a BIG influence on SRV, but he did play a lot of Hendrix and "covered" his music better than anyone. But music, like science, 'develops' from the accomplishments of others. Like SRV once said when asked if he thought he was the best ever..."I learned from the greats and just try to be myself."
@sergeantpete6295
@sergeantpete6295 4 жыл бұрын
I agree with most here. There is no "greatest artist" ever. Each artist puts his soul on canvas. Each musician flows his soul through his instrument. Jimi is and was great. I love every song he created. But SRV had a soul that was without equal. Before he got sober... after... it doesn't matter, his music was magical.

Wow! Just came back for a second look and thought I might contribute a quote from Stevie from an interview he did with guitar world. "I think I've got something special to say with my music. But I have to keep these things in perspective because they're gifts. It's all a gift and I have to keep giving back or it goes away. If I start believing that it's all my doing, it's gonna be my undoing. And I'm committing myself to doing the most I can with the gifts I have so they do as many people as much good as possible" And it is still lifting up spirits and doing as much good as possible and growing all the time.

I had the great privilege of meeting and speaking with SRV on several occasions, seeing him in concert numerous times, and when he played, it was a vibe that struck you, the energy and passion that he brought to the stage and filtered through his guitar that hit you, like a 2X4 right between your eyes. His music, especially live, changed your life. That is the greatest compliment that I can give. I recall attending the Chicago Blues Fest in 1984 or 85, while completing my doctorate degree, and it was a comfortable leisurely afternoon and evening listening to many artists and excellent performances with a good crowd, but because of the large capacity of the fairgrounds there was plenty of room to stretch-out on a towel on the great lawn, that is until Stevie showed up with his band Double Trouble around 1:00 AM and started playing, then seemingly within 15 minutes, several hundred thousand additional fans descended on the grounds and we we all packed-in like sardines, standing shoulder to shoulder witnessing greatness, a force of nature and enjoying every second of it. RIP brother, hope you are tearing it up when and if I get there.

I remember one outdoor concert it started raining pretty hard. The band had to leave the stage, but nearly the entire audience waited it out, standing in the rain, for Stevie Ray and Double Trouble to be able to retake the stage, about an hour later. Finally a reaction that is as raw as Stevies playing. You will get the same intensity in every live video because this man leaves everything on stage. Stevie started playing at the age of 7. He was inspired by 1st and foremost his big brother Jimmy Vaughn a legend in his own right, other legendary artists include B.B King, Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, Albert King and many other legends that paved the way for other artists to put their spin on the blues. The world mourned the loss of the worlds greatest guitarist. They say he played "like a man on fire". Stevie Ray Vaughn untimely death shocked the world but will always stay in our hearts forever.

Stevie puts a smile on my face that I cannot wipe off all day! So sad that he died so young, but so happy that he lived and left us with many videos and recordings.

There is no better show to pick for your SRV reaction than Live at the El Mocambo. That whole show is legendary all the way through.

Brother I'm guitar picker down here in Austin and I've been playing for 45 years. I'm pretty good but it takes devotion to play like Stevie. Practice, practice, practice!

I loved your expression, Michael, when he started playing behind his back. It took me quite a while to recognize that his voice is excellent. Because I was mesmerized by his guitar playing.

Yes, I 100% agree. No one before or since can captivate and command my attention and quite literally transend my being the way Stevie Ray Vaughan can, 30 years gone now...thank God for video!

When the Devil met Stevie at the Crossroads, he had nothing to trade for a soul that huge. He ended up getting lessons from Stevie, but when he swung it around behind his back, the Devil just sat down and cried. Stevie Ray Vaughan didn't PLAY the guitar; he WAS the guitar.

I remember the day he died. I was bartending when someone walked in and asked if I'd heard the news. I was like what news. He said SRV died in a plane crash. I was stunned shocked devastated. It was so unreal. I put Stevie on the juke box. Everybody did a shot in his honor. A huge loss to the music world. He was absolutely in a league of his own. RIP

I've lived in Austin,tx for many years. I saw Stevie many times for dirt cheap at small bars. So much that l took him for granted. Now l would give my left one to see him again! And would give big bucks to do so!

Yes - all that music came out of 3 people. Welcome aboard, my friend. So glad to see someone discover such a talent as SRV. The man was an absolute monster. Always adjusting his sound, tweaking it here, bending down to adjust a pedal there (I'm sure you saw him reach up and tune a string in this video) and forever searching for that perfect sound. No matter which SRV video you choose to watch next, pay attention to the pickup selector switch (the littlest white knob right next to the letter S in SRV.) He changes it throughout the tune he's playing, and he's so smooth with it, nobody ever notices he's changed it. One second it's up, the next it's down. It's that continuous quest for the perfect tone, along with hard-earned mastery of his instrument, that made Stevie the best.

It gives me great pleasure to see reactions to Stevie Ray Vaughan...and yours has been the best among them. I was fortunate to see him live twice...July 4, 1986 at the Farm Aid II Concert near Austin, Tx...and then thankfully (and sadly), his final concert on August 26, 1990 at the Alpine Valley Music Theater near East Troy, Wisconsin. In my mind...and heart...he will always be the best guitarist I have ever had the honor to see and hear...
