People hate it because its cheap to upgrade and requires no skill to use. You just throw it and boom, you did it, "everything" is dead. It doesnt matter if you die since the Gas still recharges. Meaning you dont have to think about positioning, which usually is a pretty big deal to playing Pyro effectively. Despite that its not actually good, its pretty garbage looking at the big picture. It incentivizes stalling to get the Gas Passer to recharge, so they start airblasting like nutjobs. Its also pretty useless against Giants/Bosses and doesnt do anything against Tanks. I've seen it time and again that Pyros throw the Gas, die and afterwards the Gas kills everything. You play badly and get rewarded. That is not good design.

If a clueless player is using it, it gives the impression of being useful but they most likely wont be able to improve in the long run. Now if a good player is using it in combination with their primary, they will most likely destroy with it since they can use their Flame Thrower effectively and clean house wherever they throw the Gas. It eliminates Pyros biggest weakness, being a close range class, and enables him to be in two places at once, so to speak.

Secondaries should be utility items for Pyro considering he already has a primary perfectly capable of dealing massive damage. If you truly wanted a secondary to be as viable as a primary weapon it should, at the very least, require some skill to use. I shouldnt be able to sit across the map, toss the Gas and annihilate every trash bot it touches.

I think I somewhat agree with your stance on the gas passer except I do have a higher tolerance level. One instance was that when I was trying to get kills to fill up the focus meter in order to prepare for using it for giants or a large crowd of bots, the pyro usually uses the gas passer to clean up the bots before I coukd shoot. It's a but frustrating, but not to the point where I go Herald11 mode.

I only understand two reasons why people might hate the gas passer. A: it is a stupidly easy weapon to use, and when you have to use ‘skill’ to use other weapons, like maybe, the Bazaar Bargain? It may get others say stuff like “oh, he’s using the gas passer. Welp, I guess he’ll be able to get more damage than me.” B: It “steals” damage points. This sorta ties in with the first, but a lot of people already have Australiam weapons, and has done all the tours of duty, so now they just do it for rackin up damage points. Gas passer pyros are obviously going to get more damage. Now, I’m a demo main, so I don’t really care about what pyros do. But c’mon, Harald. You’re getting upset because the game isn’t going that fast, but you complain about the gas passer? The weapon that can destroy hordes of robots in less than 5 seconds? Think about what you want before you shout, please.

You are somewhat correct with your assessment. The stupid ease of use is problematic because it doesnt teach the user anything about the class he's playing. Just throw it and you are done. Doesnt even matter if the user dies since bots will most likely die after his own death as well. Its not about the damage alone, at least not for me. Does it feel undeserving when someone who has no clue what he's doing, just buys one upgrade and can keep up with other classes and players that are better at the game? Yes. It steals kills. Kills other players rely on to survive or charge their weapons. Yeah, that can also happen with any other class but Pyro and his Gas Passer push this to the extreme. Gas Passer Pyros are not obviously going to get more damage. Some of them might earlier on in waves but the majority of them are god awful at what they are doing and usually get left behind around the halfway point of missions. On top of that they usually just spam Airblast mindlessly because they dont know what else to do when their overpowered Secondary is on cooldown.

I only have a problem with the gas passer when people complain that they’re trying to finish the tour faster. The gas passer WILL allow you to finish the round faster, so I don’t see why people will complain about it that way. The whole “Explode on contact” upgrade makes the new player catch up with the seasoned veterans, so I don’t really see it as THAT bad. And frankly, when I play MVM, a bad pyro who uses it, is still a bad pyro. Often times they’ll throw it in places that are bad, and not worthwhile. Hell, it don’t take skill at all, but bad pyros aren’t good at picking places to use it.

The ones that might make it go faster fully understand how utterly broken the Explode on Ignite upgrade is but they'll most likely play a class like Soldier or Demoman instead simply because they help finish tours even faster. Explode on Ignite makes the Pyro not catch up with seasoned veterans because of his own ability but because he's using an overpowered and broken weapon. He might do well enough to keep up with the veterans but he wont improve overall because he doesnt learn anything. The Gas Passer Pyros that might do well are honestly even more problematic than the ones who have no idea because they make the game 100% less fun for everyone else.

And I’m a bit confused on where you stand on the gas passer, in one paragraph you say it doesn’t catch up with the veterans, then in the next you say it does. Even in the first argument you stated that it doesn’t seem fair that a gas passer pyro can keep up with the seasoned players. I think the gas passer is valid to be used in tours, that’s my opinion. I don’t really think it’ll limit a new player in learning different weapons, that being said, TF2 feels like a situational game, and different weapons are used in different situations. Simply for the fact that its hilarious to see the majority of Gas Pyros be terrible even with such an overpowered broken weapon. The Gas Passers Explode on Ignite is broken enough that a clueless player can still perform way beyond his ability yet the majority of Pyro players are absolutely terrible even with it. A player who fully understands how broken it is and knows how to abuse it to the max will turn games into nothing but boredom. I see the Gas Passer as a weapon that is simultaneously awful and godlike based on who is using it. Yet in both cases games with a Gas Passer user are incredibly frustrating/boring. The limitation to learning comes from the fact that they dont have to learn at all. All they need to do is pick Pyro and equip the Gas Passer. That is the extend of their interest in improving. They dont care to use different weapons, learn different classes, learn about positioning, aggro, blocking etc. Why should they if the overpowered broken weapon gives them such amazing results like, killing a horde of robots, a full pack of Uber Medics etc. and all they had to do was press M1 and aim. You cant fathom the amount of times where I have been on teams that would have benefited from an Engineer or a Scout but you know what the last guy that joins the game chooses? Playing Gas Pyro.

Hey dumb question: How good is the jetpack for MVM? I enjoy dabbling into Pyro and I found the secondary slot somewhat restricted to the pocket trap compared to the different uses of the flamethrowers.

The Secondaries for Pyro are for the most part utility weapons. The Jetpack is useful for covering long distances, high distances, save yourself from receiving fall damage or altering your course after being launched and taunt cancelling. If you want to see an example you can watch - kzbin.info/www/bejne/mn-shKWhgbGNj8U Its far from perfect in terms of application on my part but should give you an idea of how to utilize it. The Detonator is similar as a mobility option that can be used to get around the map and taunt cancel. And if you REALLY want to play Pyro forget about what you called the "Pocket Trap", its just holding you back.

That don't let it grow stale. It is people like Herald11 that ruin that diverse styles of gameplay in MvM. People are afraid of using the Huntsman. They're afraid of going Black Box, or Natascha, or Loose Cannon, or Demoknight, or anything that doesn't fall into the "Meta", which shouldn't be viewed so zealously. People should be allowed to play the way they want, so long as they know how. And it's sad that Herald11 looks at MvM and doesn't see a gamemode that he plays because he wants to have fun. He doesn't care about playing it, as much as he cares about watching those little boxes explode, and if he plays with anyone who plays MvM because they enjoy it, and want to have a good time enjoying it, then it becomes a problem that he can't tolerate. There are many other problematic things in MvM but most people agree that the Gas Passers Explode on Ignite is troublesome. Pyro is a close range class. Having access to a throw-able weapon of mass destruction eliminates that weakness. Giving Pyro a way to deal with Uber Medics to break away from the "Meta" is a nice idea but also unnecessary. Why him and not other classes? Especially since Pyro already has a semi-reliable tool for dealing with Uber Medics called the Third Degree. The Gas Passer requires little to no actual ability. You aim it, you throw it, you die. They also like to pair it with Airblast. Mostly spamming it, stalling and waiting for their Gas Passer to recharge. At least thats how 90% of Pyros play - brainless. The argument of "who cares as long as it works" is also terrible. You wouldnt accept cheaters in games either, would you? Anyone can make a blacklist. Feel free to make one with people that hate the Gas Passer. It will be equally meaningless in the end.

@@memeem99 The reason you cant tank shred as Medic, Spy etc. is pretty simple. Its called balance. Certain classes are better at something compared to other classes. Most people didnt play Pyro before Gas Passer because they didnt know how to play Pyro. Suddenly they are all experts at Pyro after the Gas Passer got introduced even though nothing changed. Pyro was and still is an excellent damage dealer with both bots and tanks without the Gas Passer. The reason you didnt see anyone use the Third Degree is that Pyro wasnt, and still isnt, a reliable Med Picker. Gas is just as unreliable as the Third Degree considering the amount of Pyros who just waste it right before it would be needed. You can argue that Heavy doesnt take much skill but the difference between a good Heavy and a bad Heavy are upgrades and awareness. Which is pretty much what makes the difference no matter what class you play. The point I was trying to make bringing up cheaters is that the majority of players dont accept that. So whats the difference when another group of players, most likely a minority, doesnt accept the Gas Passer because they view it as a problem?
