After the massive amount of messages on social media and a successful collaboration with the guys from AIRLINE VIDEOS who allowed to use their video, here you have the ATC from the Lufthansa hard landing at LAX a few days ago. Not too much, but enough to hear the humble voice of the trainee pilot after his bounced landing. Go for it, dude. Better next time!

I had over 21,000 hours in the 747-422. I can attest I have made a few, well, too many bad landings, and few which required a go around. That approach looked ok in the clip, until the late flare, and maybe a bit fast. He bounced, and almost got the nose gear. BUT, the pilot flying did the absolute correct fix. He had flying speed, and took it around. He came back in a second time, and landed successfully. Absolutely nothing to criticize here. We've all done it, or you're lying if all those landings were perfect.
@davidfrench5407

It looked like a decent sink rate until the mains were about 10-20 feet off the pavement, then it looked like the lift just went away, and it dropped hard that last 10 feet. Maybe his speed burned off, and the lift just went away faster than he expected? Good to not throw the stick full forward and try to force it, good that he went around.

This is the type of thing that has to make you respect the amount of engineering that goes into modern airplanes. The stress on the struts, wheels, tires... everything just in the gear... amazing. Glad they were able to make it on the 2nd attempt! No bad feelings for the pilot, this is one he'll never forget and hopefully learn from and look back at in the future and think "whoa, rookie!" All good from here onwards!

I destroyed brand new lower control arm and the right new lower ball joint snapped because the manufacturer didn’t put any grease in the ball joint, and that was hitting a big pothole that was tiny the day before after some flooding, I was traveling at 120kmh though I was lucky as although I lost control with the steering wheel snap back, I just took my foot off the accelerator, and I ended up in the opposite lane, but thankfully I just had paddocks either side of the road at that spot and no other cars coming in the other lane. The ball joint snapped after I got to work and went to turn right so I had been at a stop, so it was very low speed thank goodness. My mechanic had another guy do his engine mounts that were new the same way the parts were from the same company.

The simultaneous commentary "oh, oH, OH, HOLY MOLY GOO--ING AROUND -- that was the roughest landing I think we've ever caught!" Then the Jet Blue pilot laughing. Then the pilot humbly admitting his landing sucked. And then, hilariously, being asked 5 different times why he's going around. And lastly, punks like me all over the world, sitting in our underwear and judging your work performance.... LOL Hilarious! Poor Lufthansa pilot... you gotta know this video is on continuous loop in their Frankfurt lunchroom. I was on an Alaska Air flight a couple years ago that hit hard like that. Without the lap belts we would have been tossed out of our seats. Pilot decided to ride it out and keep it on the ground. By the time we were stable enough to brake we were halfway down the runway. Brake application bounced my head off the seat in front of me. It was a wild ride.

EVERYONE is a beginner in the beginning. That is just how it works. And EVERYONE makes mistakes now and then. That is just how it works. I do mistakes at work now and then, despite been working there for 15 years. That is just, how it works. And everything went as it should: Perfectly executed go-around and then a new try. And the plane is designed to take really hard landings. The brutal tests that are done on wings and landing gears and frame are amazing, and terrifying, to watch!

The good news in this video is that Lufthansa is obviously planning to keep their Queens of the Sky in passenger operation for a longer period of time. Recently they had to cancel several transatlantic flights due to a shortage in available pilots with a 747 type rating (due to illness). So, to the pilot in this video: keep at it! 👍🏻 We.need you to keep the 747s up. And watch some videos in which Kelsey (74Gear) admits how he has slammed the plane into the ground but that he has been lucky that nobody filmed it. (Nowadays at LAX - no chance!) Just like him, I’m sure this will have been a valuable learning experience. Good luck!

I heard from other 747 pilots that for new pilots, it can be difficult to judge the flare due to the height of the cockpit.

The 748 is not the easiest aircraft to land smoothly I imagine, other hard landing videos on the web as well. Last year, I got my first chance to fly in this awesome plane, IAH-FRA and FRA-IAH. The first landing at FRA was very nice and smooth. The landing at IAH was definitely on the hard side (nowhere as hard as this one, but it would definitely wake you up if you were not by that time for some reason).

She called traffic 12 o’clock and a mile. Actually it was 3 miles. Why can’t they wait til they land to ask the reason for the go around? If they have an issue they will let you know. Don’t bother them during critical phase….go around or landing.

@dayeightfloyd5495 they ask for 2 reasons, firstly to know if the aircraft went around due to windshear, so they can immediately start passing it to the next aircraft. Secondly, they need to know if the aircraft is now in an emergency state so they can start clearing the airspace etc etc. So if the pilot doesn't give the reason, you ask at the first convenient moment.
