I watched these events on cbs starting with the evacuation of the US embassy in Saigon with Dad back in 75 when I was 14 years old. He is a Navy flattop veteran and told me and my younger brothers what the circumstances of what was happening when Sailors were pushing Hueys over the side. Midway Captain Lawrence Chambers had a difficult decision to make. He could let a South Vietnamese AF officer and his family try to survive a water landing in a small plane or make room for them to land on the flight deck. He wisely chose the latter.

I got goosebumps and emotionally. I feel bittersweet because I am happy that Vietnamese people found the destination of freedom .

Those were crazy times over there, I was stationed at a fighter base in Thailand that was used in the Vietnam war at the time of the fall of Saigon. A few days prior Cambodia fell to the Khmer Rouge, then Saigon and a couple of weeks later the Khmer Rouge captured the US container ship the SS Mayaguez. Our base was a beehive of activity at that time and the strangest sight was seeing a helicopter land and guys in white dress shirts and ties and wearing sunglasses hop off carrying an M60 machine gun and a grenade launcher, just your average business types? A Lt. Colonel standing next to me at the flightline remarked, "Ya think they might be CIA?"

Major SV Puang and his family of 5 were getting away from Saigon in his Cessna O-1 and they pushed those UH-1 Huey’s overboard to clear up space for the Cessna.
