Great portrait Rory, chance upon your video while looking for backdrop. Beyond the lighting and backdrop, I love the expression of your subjects's expression and eye. I'm a photographer and videographer myself, I enjoy photographer who captures the expression of their portrait well. Great and stunning portrait. Simple but so powerful. You got a new sub !

James Purefoy is my favorite actor .. he is quintessential .. enigmatic .. charismatic .. indomitable.. and courageous.. James is the personification of raw masculinity with a gentle touch of vulnerability.. he is a truly beautiful man .. he epitomizes strength and gentleness.. kindness and compassion .. to me, he is perfect .. And your photography is superb .. ethereal and honest ., your skill with lighting is excellent .. and your explanation of how you achieved these effects phenomenal ,, James Purefoy IS the meditative warrior.. your brilliant and extraordinary photograph of him and his sword is achingly beautiful .. a fitting tribute to this extraordinarily strong and beautiful man .. Often when seeing something truly beautiful, I find myself moved to tears .. and your impeccable artistry is indeed truly beautiful .. Btw.. would have allowed James to keep the sword.. definitely believe he earned it 🌹 Thank you ., Jen999💙

You are so right in suggesting that if possible one uses an actor as a subject, as they will be more comfortable in front of a camera, with taking direction and not become self conscious. Also, because of training and experience they will more easily understand and interpret what you ask for. This all makes life so much easier for the photographer. Of course, it also helps if the subject is photogenic, as James Purefoy definitely is. ‘Never seen one bad shot of him yet!

Once again Mr Lewis, you have brought us, much useful information and helpful tips on how photograph people, and what a study you have given us of James Purefoy. There is no doubt that the man's face, through your portrait of him, is telling us a deep story. I wonder, have you ever shot Sir Billy Connolly? Is he somebody you'd like to photograph? Do you plan on doing so if you have not done so? I'm sure Billy would love to sit for you and that you'd both get on like the proverbial house on fire. I am conviced you'd do his characterful face serious justice

I really like how you go beyond just telling a story, but creating the character to go with it. I can see how that works well towards creating such stunning portraits with so much depth. Thanks for sharing!

Great job on subject's background as well as your explanation of how you shot these images and the gear used. Have you done videos on the editing techniques you use?

Thank you for your comments. Alas I don't teach retouching, it would take a completely different youtube channel. My best advice is to find a good youtuber who teaches fine art portrait retouching.

Great , simple, and inspirational. I love how simplistic your process is and the end product is wonderful. Question: it’s kinda obvious you shoot in Manual Mode. I noticed your shutter speed is at 1/100. Is your main light continuous light, or flash? Coz I’m thinking at that low shutter speed , that would invite some form of ambient light. Waiting for an answer. Thanks.

Don't use continuous, I'm using flash, much better, less grain sharper images! Don't forget to help support my channel buy me a coffee! www.buymeacoffee.com/rorylewisphotog

Excellent video Rory. Just to have an idea... How long do you stay with your model from the first click to the last one? And how many pictures do you actually take in average to get the shots you need? 50? 100? 500? Really hard to guess. All the best.

Depends on the client some celebrity sittings you don't have any more than 15-20 minutes, for an every client it can last around 1 hour. Normally capturing 100-200 frames different poses and positions. Don't forget to help support my channel buy me a coffee! www.buymeacoffee.com/rorylewisphotog
