This dresser needed full refinishing, new drawer slides (which I make myself with a table saw and some scrap wood from furniture deconstruction), and hardware. I opted for a wood/paint combination, using a custom mixed stain and one of Fusion Mineral Paint's new colours, Chestler.
While it always pains me a little to paint over walnut (even if it's veneer), that was the vision I had for this piece, and I left a lot of the beautiful woodgrain showing.
I did add new legs and new hardware, though I went back and forth MANY times over my choices. In the end, I AM happy with it and, best of all, I'm going to be donating this piece to 10,000 Carrots Rabbit Rescue, the rescue I help out with and foster for, and we will be raffling tickets (local only, sorry!).
In addition, you'll see a bit of our brush with Hurricane Fiona, and Nacho's new sombrero. 😍

One of my favorite things to see you address is the stewardship of caring for what an owner may want to do with it down the road, and protecting the piece beyond your current transformation. It really speaks to the durability of quality furniture. Also, it lacks the vanity that is apparent in the way some people attempt to “salvage” a piece and potentially ruin it without knowing it.

She sealed it before painting! I love that! I was still doubtful but the paint turned out to really accent the beauty of the wood, & it's gorgeous. I was rooting for the rounded drawer pulls & I'm so glad she chose them. They are absolutely perfect for that piece.

Every once in a while, if we get lucky, we find a animal, a precious pet, who just fits us and for whom we fit. Like mates...a fit. You and Nacho found that fit. Those precious times, when the fates brought you together, are some of the best memories. Your art and your pal, Nacho, are a delight to behold. My heart wept for your family when Muffin went off to search the universe. Time moves on and leaves us in its memory. Celebrate the time and memory! Lucky animals who found us and those we stumbled upon!

Angie, you are a wood savant. A wood whisperer. I’m convinced that you talk to these pieces and they tell you what they dream to be! Your knowledge of wood and the products that best work are just incredible. As for Nacho I feel so bad that he was so terrified in the hurricane! Lol. I’m glad y’all and safe and no big damage was done. I have family in Florida and it’s been quite the scare.

I normally hate to see lovely wood grain being painted instead of being brought up to its natural beauty, but with this piece you have created something very artistic. The painted parts break up the great expanse of wood and compliment it perfectly. The handles and legs are imaginative and make for great balance. Congratulations!

As a former neighbor (4yr old), would say 'that was a Hot Mess Express!'. (She didn't know what it meant, she just enjoyed the adult's reactions.) You transformed it into a classic piece. And your rabbit seems to find it acceptable - definitelya strong recommendation. The devastation from recent storms has been nasty. So thankful to know your damage was somewhat minor. It seems Taco knows how to remain stress-free during a storm - perform a horizontal hat dance. (All 4yrs of high school I tried to take Wood Shop classes. Females were not allowed. I graduated in 1968. I understand that restriction no longer exists.)

I was in the same restricted environment. Girls were not allowed past the sacred threshold of the woodshop, "boys only" allowed in the temple. I am 70 now, and learning about woodworking and refinishing. I have never used a table saw but sure would like to try it! I'm glad girls now have the opportunity to learn when they are young, it becomes so natural and there are more decades ahead in life to enjoy the plant life that supports our needs. I pray that trees are someday more respected for all they give us.

Too bad, I have the handle you are missing. Mine was from Ontario along with other handles. People were just putting in the dumpster when I came along and had them bring it to my apt. The top turned out to solid maple. Turned out beautiful. I left the drawers in natural maple and painted the sides because the bottom edges were very damaged. I kept original feet, just cutting 2 inches off the bottom. I love it. Im newly subscribed. So glad to find another great furniture refinisher, rather than someone who just paints over everything. I watch a friend from Estonia who is an old world furniture builder and refinisher. He does furniture hundreds of years old and does such a very thorough job. I must say you do very fine work. You make me proud to be a wood working woman. Although I’m 73 and my healthy keeps me going slower than ever before, I have 4 more projects to do before I shuffle off this mortal coil. Love your music. Lived through the 60s and 70s myself, I can appreciate. Hint for great wood is to buy old oak table tops, kitchen table tops and legs. Anything that’s offered at really great prices is really worth having on hand to make new tops for dresses, drawer fronts, legs, aprons, etc. Great watching you. Bravo! Linda

I love the shots of Nacho and the hat. You’re lucky he’s so patient! If I ever tried that with my cat, I would’ve bled profusely! This is a beautiful transformation. I’m glad you’re helping out a rescue!

I’m so glad a woman got to go to wood shop. I’m 65 and never got to until in my late 50’s when I went to a Chicago Park District woodworking class. Thank God. I built a big chair with a lot of guidance and help. So, I learned something. I will consider myself a beginner forever. So much to learn so little time.

Actually, I'm self taught. HOURS and HOURS and HOURS of research; KZbin videos, free AND paid online courses, books, blogs, and good ol’ trial and error. It takes a LONG time to become proficient in any area, but truthfully, you never really stop learning. I STILL watch many KZbin wood workers and furniture folks while I’m working on pieces in the garage. And I LOVE a good book.

I love that you prefer to stain rather then to paint most of the furniture you restore and when you do paint there is a legitimate reason for it. I can't watch a lot of furniture flips because they almost always want to paint them instead of giving them a little TLC.

Awesome!!!!🤩🤩🤩 This video has it ALL, Angie. This dresser is one of my favorites so far, and frankly, so is this video because it is so well produced in spite of the hurricane and its aftermath, and is chock-full of the informative, entertaining and inspirational content that brings me back over and over. I appreciate the way you use your resources wisely and encourage others to do so, as well. Taking that old desk and headboard apart to use the wood on other projects makes so much sense; I hope other folks will be inspired to save & repurpose wood from otherwise "scrapped" furniture. Thanks for sharing how you truly struggled over whether or not to paint over some of that lovely wood; I applaud your courage! You searched for and finally found drawer pulls that nicely compliment the design you chose; it turned out beautifully! Thanks for the video clips of the hurricane and of the mess it made of lives and property. It was good to see Nacho doing a soft-shoe kitty version of the Mexican hat dance and then napping while the hurricane did its best to dismantel the world outside. How on earth did those poor deer and other critters survive all of that? Ugh! I pity the people and animals who did not fare as well.😢 Anyway, I also really appreciate how, just before the "reveal" you you lined up all of the products that you used for this project - wow! So many!? I try to take notes as I watch, but sometimes I just let my brain go off-leash and let it meander in the magic. Good stuff!🤎🖤🤍💚💛💜💙🧡💖

This was brilliant!!! I love seeing the bunny in the drawer and it's so great that the sale will benefit their cause!!! ❤❤❤ This was veneer over plywood. Don't ever beat yourself up over painting something like this. I get it, it's still wood and veneer isn't cheap and has been done nearly forever. (I'm choking over a piece in my house, that I have to decide what to do with.) You did it better than justice. I like how you reclaimed the wood from the other piece. The handles are always a quandary, they set the tone or are the graceful, finished part of the piece. I started watching this with hubby while we waited for our dinner in a quiet corner of our favorite Mexican food restaurant. One of the guys working there passes by our table, just as Nacho is playing with/wearing his little sombero. He is "Que?" And then I get to tell him that " Nacho, el gatito es del mismo color que el queso nacho e igual de picante." By then, our food arrived and our server wanted to see. Some other staff wandered up and I explained again and that y'all are in Nova Scotia and what you do. I think I replayed that section 4 times and showed what you did 4 times too. They thought it was hilarious! One of the ladies said that Nacho's paws were cool. They certainly are. Fortunately, those words are similar. Hopefully they start watching! We're in Texas. I took Latin in school, so my Spanish sounds like a textbook...
