Absolutely beautiful. I have always adored this ever since I first heard David Essex's version in the early 1980's. But why does it always give me a lump in my throat (or more)?!

It's a real tear-jerker, one for an aching heart. I remember listening to this over Christmas 1982, pining for a girl I'd just met.

Just to clear up confusion - in the comments below, loads of people saying Essex's version was the best etc - you should know that the man singing it here Mike Batt actually wrote it for Essex.

David Essex's version was superb but never knew until just now that Mike wrote it. Wow.

I've recently been able to re-introduce myself to the magic and phenomenon of Mike Batt. I Knew of Bright Eyes, Winter's Tale, etc. as I was growing up during the 70's & 80's, and felt an affinity with the music, the words etc. But it wasn't until 'The Dream Stone' came to fruition, I could really appreciate what Mr Batt had given me. In short, words, melodies, tune-laden sentiments, that appealed to me as a child, yet inspire me as an adult. "She cooks a mean Hamburger, learnt from a leaflet, better than the kind that you get from a Takeaway... I was born No.17, Romeo, Delta 59, system 605, Unit 91..." Respect to one and all who remember Batt's Masterpiece... Can you remember the latter's Title?

Mike Batt is definitly the the best performer of his own songs. Compared to his, all other versions are just "pale copies" . Merry Christmas to all and keep on wombling!!

I know of only one cover that is even better than he original. Listen to the version of the Moody Blues on their December album.
No, definately the best is the Moody Blues version by Justine Hayward. But imho is Mike Batt one of the greatest british composers with this piece, Feel like Buddy Holly and alot of other hits.

This is a fantastic song - I remember being so disappointed that it was beaten to the UK Number 1 by 'Save your Love' by Renee and Renata (remember them!?). I do prefer David Essex's vocals (sorry Mike!), but am blown away by the lyrics, orchestral arrangement, backing singer and the mix. The lyrics are particularly poignant for me, so I do shed a tear or two whenever I listen to it, but I do listen to it every Winter.

Great performer and what a beautiful song! Female background singer has problems with following Mike's timing though. This is also the case in other songs of this concert, so maybe her monitor wasn't adjusted right. nevertheless a well-orchestrated version of the composer himself.

I dont understand the appeal of this music. The simple lyrics with an elaborate orchestra? I expect it in pop music. But this?
