I start with a rough outline of a story.That means I've just written characters, too, because you can't have a story without characters. Then I write the whole play - 90-110 pages - fast - which means it's a garbage draft, not really a first one. And I know I will be destroying it very soon and that gives me comfort. But before I do I use that garbage draft as a super outline of the play itself and try to write a perfect first draft from that. (It's not even close of course, but no longer so far away)
