Drametse Nga-Cham | UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Drametse Ngacham or the "Dance of the Drums of Drametse," is known to be originated in
the 16th century at present day Drametse in Mongar district. Drametse, is about 89 KM from Mongar town and 30 KM from Trashigang. It was founded by Ani Choeten Zangmo, granddaughter of Terton Pema Lingpa. She is an epitome for human enlightenment who abandoned worldly desires in pursuit of spirituality.
The spiritual dance known as Drametse Ngacham is believed to have been created by Ani Choeten Zangmo’s brother, Lam Kuenga Gyeltshen. The cham is performed by many mask dancers representing various forms of animals including ox, tiger, lion, monkey, guruda, etc each carrying drum except the Guruda which holds cymbal.
The various steps displayed by the dancers point out our nature of mind to liberate us from the ocean of sufferings. Therefore, it is outmost important for one to witness the cham or the mask dance without fail in once lifetime.
Today, Drametse is the seat of H.E Lhalung Sungtrul Rimpoche Jigdrel Kunzang Dorji the 11th incarnation of Terton Pema LingpaToday, the dance is performed at all major festivals across the country. This dance was proclaimed as a Masterpiece of the World Intangible Heritage' by UNESCO in 2005.
