1930's bias dresses had all these beautiful shapes and seams, which helped to eliminate waste. Bias dresses can have very little waste if planned correctly.

I draped a test out of polyester cheap fabric and fit is great-but have sewn up cheap poly one and issues always arise. Would love more techniques on bias sewing/linings for silks and sewing tips. Would you be adding any of these tutorials? I'm making a dress I designed in expensive silk charmeuse and do not want to mess it up. Love your turtorials!!!
@NickVerreosFashionSchool7 жыл бұрын
Hi Joanne! OMG!!! Tell me about it! (sewing cheap polyester satins on the bias!!). When reading your comment I almost had the (fashion) shivers! Oh the unraveling, the fabric shredding...oh the cheap poly! Bless its heart. I wish I could tell you there was a special trick but there isn't. It's what you must go through when sewing in that cheap fabric so you don't waste it on an expensive silk charmeuse. To help, however, make sure you use a needle that is small,--like size "11" or smaller; made for sewing thinner fabrics. And also, a tighter tension on your machine's tension knob might help as well. Also using smaller stitch sizes might help. It's the unraveling of the fabric at the edges that makes me KRAZEE!!!! Anyhow, hope some of this info. helps and Best of Luck. Also, I wish I could do sewing tutorials but I think there are enough videos online of these and for now, I just wanted to concentrate on Draping and Patterns as well as Sketching. All of those videos take a lot of time so I didn't want to get too involved with adding another layer of videos--like sewing ;) At least for now. Thank you for enjoying my tutorials btw! XO, Nick
@JR-xw9rx7 жыл бұрын
Hello Nick,Thank you for your response! I am sorry for the delay in seeing this. I also had the fashion shivers the whole time with the horrible shredding. I would never waste on the beautiful Charmeuse Ombre I purchased at Mood! That would be a nightmare. My fabric is stunning. I actually powered through two test runs on draping and sewing -even lining...(amid all shredding and horror) of that poly for fit as well and glad I did! I did find many tutorials on needle sizes, tension, threads and stitches for silk online. I finally cut the REAL DEAL and sewing is working out beautiful. The dress fits me so wonderful. Steaming it while sewing makes me shiver now. I have my old text books from FIT when I graduated in 1980-before you were a twinkle in your parents eyes.LOL. It has been 30 years since I designed. ( I had to change careers-long story) I am semi-retired and back at it enjoying creating clothes, but just for me! I love to drape and its wonderful for you to take the time to answer me. Keep posting the videos! I wish they had this when I was in school. Love your upbeat and funny personality. :) Joanne

I’m having a really hard time figuring out how to get it off the dress form and then sew it together
@patrickjohnson6953 жыл бұрын
this is not what you sew together. this was the drape for the pattern pieces for the real dress. you take these pieces and transfer the shapes and markings to the wrong side of the real fabric and THEN sew those new pieces together. otherwise you'd have a dress with a big grain line down the center front and sharpie marker in the seam.
@elizabethbell1077 Жыл бұрын
But if you're really determined, french seams would probably be the most realistic option

@jaredini4 жыл бұрын
Easiest way to learn how to sew nearly anything is to take and old shirt and take it apart and studying how it all goes together. It's all just working folds and seams and fitting peices together like a jigsaw.
