Outstanding, Doug. This post should be a reference point for anyone interested in this model. I don't have one (yet), and I have been looking at the Platinum version from the 70s and 80s, and just ordered on eBay a Leonardo Furore at a below retail price. This, like the Parker 51, is the ultimate marriage of perfect form and excellent function. Now watch prices explode because of your well thought out review. I agree with not following the well treaded path, but we all do start somewhere. It's being able to discern the likes and dislikes - talking about pens here - that we make more educated decisions when purchasing a fountain pen. With some exceptions, I have found myself happier with Indian pens than Chinese (but Hongdian is making a strong case, as well as the recent 2022 Jinhaos) in daily use. Girth, weight, balance, and above all putting the nib to paper are all things that I've become more attentive to, and started refining my choices. Congratulations on a long and happy marriage (my folks reached 50 before my mom's passing), and hopefully many more years to come!

If I was into smaller and pocketable oens, this would be high on the list. I really like the design of this pen. The only flaw is the convertor really. If I had it I would fill reused cartridge with syringe, as that is the only way to avoid the convertor that shall not be named. Even the squeeze one in metro is better, although of course it isn't optimal. Certainly this is the cheapest way to get gold Pilot nib.

I have had a soft spot for the shorter, "pocket" pens, and I've been keeping an eye on this pen, because of this. Of course, that'd lead to having to get the similar ones from Sailor and Platinum... I guess I just need to bite the bullet... Thanks for sharing this (again. ) Not sure, but if you count the Conklin clips from just after WWI, spring clips have been around for over a century, though it seems like Sheaffer really pushed them in the 1950s. Another example of "there's only so many ways to make a pen." And I agree. More, even today, should still have them. And hope you and Winnie have a wonderful anniversary!

Goodness, I've heard two friends say what an awesome pen this is (they got it from Goulet?) and I would go for one myself but I have a Sailor that is the spitting image of the e95s (sounds like a highway) that I've had for so many years and it is the gold standard of EF fountain pens (starts if left for months, is as smooth as an EF can possibly be) so I guess I can only wonder if the Pilot is as good. These kinds of pens (my Sailor for sure) are perfect for EDC and never let you down when you need them. If you get a finer width nib they hold enough ink for a lot of writing. Even though I'm not biting for this gem I believe it is one. Great recommendation by IM! Loved the intro, which may tell you something.

Totally agree, my favourite every day pen. I have a vintage 18k one with a posting nib that lives with my hobonichi weeks planner and goes everywhere with me and another in a fine nib that lives with my a6 5-year hobonichi. And i just bought 2 of the newer models in EF and medium. I have no doubt i will love them as much as my 2 vintage Elites :-) Can't wait to try the medium, knowing it writes broader than Pilot's normal medium nibs. Look forward to receiving them and the feeling of them on the paper. And I don't feel bad about owning 4 of them either. Because 2 are vintage, with a PO (18k) and F nib (14k) and the new ones have an EF and M nib :-) Really feel blessed and grateful! Only wish I had children to pass these great pens on to.... because i know they will last for years and years! There is not a scratch on the ones from the 70s and they are not babied but go everywhere with me, attached to a penloop on my planner. Love them!!

@@martinlebl631 The WS 699 is a fine copy. The quality of the material may not be as good, but they do a pretty good job putting the cheaper materials together and it all works very well. Great review…… First off……I don’t think you need apologize for your opinion on the Pilot Metropolitan. After reading countless positive reviews, I decided I needed to have this pen, so I trundled off to a store in Toronto and laid down my money. But here’s the thing…….. Even though I don’t have a tattoo, having the Metropolitan in my possession reminds me of what I’m sure many people who have tattoos say to themselves after getting one, namely, ‘how did I end up with this?’ And then…..’Geez…..I hope nobody sees it!’ The Metro is THE most uncomfortable pen I own and I have come to completely ignore it. But now for the good news…….last Sunday my Pilot Elite arrived. Burgundy with a Medium nib. Sensational. Although I kinda wish I ordered the Fine. And I likely will in the near future. But, ya know….. this is SUCH a beautiful pen, I’m tempted to get a tattoo. Yes. A tattoo. One that reads ‘The Pilot Elite. I Never Had Any Ink-ling. Ok……maybe not……😎

Wonderful review, as always. Something I love is that the section is so long on the e95S that you can hold it fore or aft, whatever comforts you. And the cap is similarly long so that the posted cap has no step-down, to bother the place where it rests on the hand. I want to know which one Winn chooses to use. @@InkquiringMinds Yes Sir, you are right, may i ask how much paper could you write on with one full cartridge? I know it depends on the ink and the paper but knowing iroshizuku ink and the paper you always use i can make an idea. It Will help me making a final decission. Thank you so much for your videos and your attention here. Hoping you have a very good day

@@achoti0-original I'm not using the pen constantly, but it sits on my desk inked and ready to use all the time. If I were using it every day for journaling, I would probably fill it once every three or four days.

My Elite (yes, bought from the Japanese market, not the Korean Elite) is an extra-fine and was my first gold-nibbed pen. I no longer recall whether or not mine came with a converter at all. Pretty sure it didn't come with that aerometric CON20, though. The EF does have a whisper of feedback, but it IS different than an EF or UEF nib from Platinum. I've never written with a Sailor gold nib so I can't compare. There are three reasons I did not immediately take up my Elite as my only pen to write everything with! 1. It should weigh more. P'raps if they overlaid the resin finishes over a brass inner body? 2. It should also come in black with rhodium trim. 3. I'm a hoarder. If I found The Magic Pen tomorrow, my kids will still be punished with dealing with disposing of my fountain pen collection after I'm gone.

The pen is unchanged since it was introduced 27 years ago.

I would love if Pilot upscaled this pen just a bit. Hit the enlarge button at 120% to 130%, and thus make one that fits a decent convertor, but keep the proportions and design otherwise unchanged. It would make a nice normal sized pen as well, and that cap would be even more spectacular.

That would be cool!

Could you tell me exactly which nib this is? I wasn't sure if you're saying a Japanese Fine is the same as a European medium?
@InkquiringMinds2 жыл бұрын
It is a medium made in Japan. Eastern nibs tend to be a grade thinner than western nibs. It is all semantics anyway as the nib writes a 0.65mm line regardless of what you call it.

Thank you. Sorry to be obtuse, but, if I order a Medium, that’s what you showed in the vid? Great work, btw!

Well, I solved my modern/vintage Pilot Elite dilemma. I now own a modern Champaign/red pen and a 1975 vintage black/silver version. Both are from the Japanese market (they're branded Elite rather than just E). They both have fine nibs, the vintage is 18k vs the modern pen's 14k gold nib. Lengthwise, the pens are identical, but the modern pen is ever so slightly wider and doesn't taper quite as much as the vintage pen. The nib settings are also different; the modern pen shows off more of the nib. Both write wonderfully. If I keep watching all these fountain pen reviews I'm going to run out of money.

Well well well.... Adding this to my shopping list. I already like: -the Capping mechanism, -the nib design (hopefully there's a Japanese fine nib available) -taper on the grip section. Deal breaker: the fxvking CON-40!!! Gosh.. Pilot.. Please make use of the dumpster by getting rid of that awful converter! Great vid!

Fine nib is available and syringe fill an empty cartridge. It holds 1ml of ink and you can see your ink levels.

Unbelievable quality and content as always sir. I have been wondering about buying pens directly from Japan, like the watch hobby there is some amazing deals to be had, and the Yen being so undervalued right now... I like the Pilot Prera as an entry level Pilot pen? Thank you for your time sir.

I don't know if I have ever seen a pen with such varied pricing on it. Amazon rages from 69 (for an extra fine) to 136. Why did you order from China? Aren't you worried about getting a counterfeit version?
@InkquiringMinds2 жыл бұрын
I ordered on Aliexpress because the price for a medium was $75 where it is $136 from Goulet. Aliexpress is pretty good at doing returns and refunds. I had a pen arrive in very flimsy packaging and it was scratched and I got a full refund and kept the pen.

I was considering this pen, but the converter and light weight persuaded me to say no. It is a beautiful pen, just not for me. I prefer a weightier pen.
