I would love to find a vintage Elite...the one in the video is superb! The new version is beautiful as well, and nothing can beat a Pilot nib, IMO!

I have recently purchased a vintage 1972 Pilot Elite w/18K nib from Japan. I usually disassemble and clean all my vintage pens thoroughly and this pen was no exception. Initially the pen did not write good, very stingy on ink flow. Finally discovering how to disassemble it, I took it apart and found there is fiber sponge material that wicks ink from the feed and this was totally disintegrated. The pen was essentially useless with no way of controlling the ink flow........Thinking for a bit I remembered that the current $3 Pilot Varsity also uses this type of ink feed mechanism.....could it be that the fiber piece in the Varsity could be repurposed in the 1972 Pilot? Yes Japanese engineering again! The Diameter of the fiber was perfect and only needed to be trimmed and tapered a bit to fit under the Elite gold nib. It is now an amazing pen that never leaks and writes every time just like my (refillable) Varsity. Thanks for the video, I hope my info helps others that have an old Elite in the drawer. I always appreciate your engineering attention.

See, THIS is what KZbin comments sections should be. Great feedback and sharing of information. So much negativity and complaining these days. Thank you for posting this! As a fellow vintage Elite owner ('74, here!), I am now armed with additional knowledge should I ever find myself experiencing ink flow problems.

This is great! When i disassembled my vintage elite a couple months ago, i had the exact same thought. i used a replacement fiber tip for marker pens, sliced and shaved to fit with a scalpel. Works perfectly!

If I remember right, my first gold nib was either a Porsche Design (made by Pelikan) or a Pilot VP. But they went into storage and it was until years later when I got myself a Wing Sung 698 that I truly began to appreciate the subtle ways in which modern gold nib pens are different to steel nibs.

My first gold nib pen, I believe, was a Platinum 3776. I bought it seven or eight years ago and since then I've picked up gold nibbed pens from several manufacturers but Pilot seems to offer the most consistent writers, in my opinion. Thank you for your excellent video and good luck to everyone in the drawing!

My first and only ever gold nib was the Lamy 2k F. I still have it today, it's a great writer even though it gave me some trouble at the start it writes surprisingly well. And I mean, the design of that pen is iconic, just like the e95s.

I recently ordered several Pilot gold nib pens as I heard about the price increase, they are the first in my collection: Custom 743 (FA nib), VP (Rhodium Stripe, F), Decimo (black, EF), VP LS (black, M), Falcon Elabo (brown, SEF), and a rare pen I haven't seen covered the Grance (dark blue, F). I was considering an e95s but I purchased the vintage Shaeffer Targa in this style of nib. ❤

My first gold nib is a sailor 1911S. I was initially considering this, but at the time I was about to purchase, I thought I might not like it being very “pocket-sized”. But thinking about it now, I think this might have been a better choice especially its cap is friction-fit and I do a lot of jotting down, and screwcaps need a bit more effort to do.

Picked up a second hand E95S in black as my first gold nib. The E95S fine does write a bit drier, even compared to a Prera fine - same as your review showed. As a result you can get a bit of line variation when writing quickly. I also took the E95S on a flight recently, it was kept unfortunately horizontal and ink emptied out but stayed inside the cap. I had the con40 and it wasn't full. Please exclude from the raffle.

The day I walked in intending to get my first gold nibbed pen, I ended walking out with another steel nibbed pen I fell in love with that day. It was also the last one in stock. The Elite was one of the contenders that day though. I loved the compact size when capped and the inlaid nib. One day I will finally get a gold nibbed pen! But I still can't decide which one. I'm considering a Lamy 2000 because I don't have a Lamy yet, I love the look of the pen, and it was the pen that got me interested in the world of fountain pens.

You can always refill the converters or empty cartridges with a syringe. Much cleaner way, plus you don't waste your money that bought you that ink. Doodlebud put the whole pen inside the ink bottle on this video, he wasted more ink wiping that pen than he used to refill it.

As a newer person in the hobby, I’ve been eyeing either a Pilot Vanishing Point or a Lamy 2000 as my first gold nib pen. I currently have a Platinum 200 that looks similar to that Elite but I’m pretty sure its nib is a steel nib with a gold-ish (not sure if it’s real gold) plating on it.

My first gold nib was a Waterman CF that my parents gave to me when I got my degree en Physics, back in June 1981, so nearly 43 years ago. I still keep it although I don't use it, but from time to time I take the pen out of the box because it brings me fond memories of my parents who passed away two years ago. On the other hand I think the Pilot Elite is a gorgeous pen, classical but timeless and with a marked personality. The commenter who gets it will be a lucky one.

My first gold nib was an aurora 88 vintage. Had an horrible experience with that nib. It scratched the paper like hell. I know how to tune nibs but those looong nibs are so delicate. My first gold nib pen was the Pilot Custom 74 M in Dark Blue GT. I was actually a bit disappointed with it at first, it had some skipping issues. I kept trying the pen, and kept running into the same problem. Eventually, I thought through the risk/reward to tune a gold nib for the first time: I don't particularly like the balance/grip of the pen so I likely won't buy another one. I didn't buy from a retailer either. I actually used the technique you mentioned in your videos, where you pull the shoulders a bit. I also did a bunch of research for other techniques and how to pull the nib and feed. At first, it wasn't doing much but I eventually became brave enough to pull harder. I could tell I got pretty close to the limit, but what came out of it was a pen I could enjoy using a lot more than before. Nitpicking, I did lose more of that drier upstroke quality that pilot pens supposedly have AND I still don't particularly like the sound of the nib on the paper. But it's good enough that I'll use it and enjoy it, which is much better than where it was before!

My first gold nib fountain pen was also my first fountain pen. I got a Pilot VP at the retailer’s suggestion. I had bad writer’s cramp and carpal tunnel syndrome with rollerballs and ballpoints while handwriting on medical charts. I was convinced this was caused by me having a deathgrip on them. I had never used fountain pens before, but I figured the threat of ruining a $120 pen (back then) would get me out of the habit and it did. No more carpal tunnel symptoms and down the rabbit hole I went.

There are vintage Pilot Elite’s with the crosshatch pattern that have the same type of nib as the modern E95s and have the same thickness. I personally prefer the style of the vintage one you have because it’s easier to clean and the nib isn’t glued on like the other nib style. Thank you for the in-depth comparison. I have been eyeing the e95s for a while. My first gold nib was the Platinum 3776 in a soft-fine. I didn't like it at first and immediately went back to my steel nibs. But I'm trying it again to see if I feel any differently after another year. (Being in true Platinum form, the ink still write phenomenally since the cap seals so darn well) It's so bouncy which is so different from what i'm used to. I'm wondering how it compares to the Pilot e95s

Really appreciate the facial tissue test! Wasn't aware of that one -- I'll use it tomorrow! Meanwhile, first gold nib...was actually my first "real" FP. My wife gifted me a Montblanc Classique. My time in the hobby spans nearly 4 decades now so for the longest time, all of my pen acquisitions had gold nibs -- there wasn't as large a price differential and I was unaware of good steel nibs. Finally discovered the beauty of steel about 12-15 years ago. Too soon old, too late smart!

I'm undecided between e95s and Custom 91. I guess Doodlebud will decide it for me, one way or the other. :P

Being new to the fountain pen world watching videos like this have been very helpful. I only have two pens in my collection, a lamy al-star and a jinhaox159. Its hard to decide if I get the lamy gold nib or just buy another pen with a gold nib when the time comes. I would love some feedback from people on the performance of the lamy nib.
