I thank you for the explanation and diagram of the purpose of the breather tube and the blowhole. Physics is an interesting science. Lovely restoration, Doug.

It's amazing a pen made in the 1940's can still be restored like that, it turned out really nice and i'm guessing it was be repaired at some point as well.

Yes. The latex diaphragm is new. They only last five years or so depending on care and maintenance.

Lovely pen. Finally bought my first Vacumatic (Canada 1953) in Azure Blue. Now I understand your love for them. Keep up the good work.

Though I generally like my Waterman's pens more from a writing experience perspective I really love my Vacumatics. These pens are so beautiful. I really believe they are unparalleled by modern pens. Thanks for sharing a great resurrection.

As I stated 1 week ago, I can only learn from every video and you proved my words with the diagram which was done really well. Even me could understand it. Don't need to say that the restoration and video was done well again, That's already a standard here. I've got 1 year ago a Debutane from 1945, 3rd gen. When it arrived I was disappointed, because of the short, small size. My mistake (as most of the time) because I didn't know at that time enough of the many different sizes, names and models Parker made. I just wanted to get a Vac without paying my a.. off. At USD 160 I thought I would get a regular size pen at a decent price. No, I got a small pen, but writing well with an accountant (xxF) 14 K nib. Quickly I started to love it, when posted it's fitting well in my hands and the low weight is no more a negative point. The clip unfortunately lost all it's gold plating and the brass (?) tarnishes much too quickly. Maybe a result of the terrible hot and humid weather conditions. I'm not sure if the diaphragm works correct, (the seller confirmed that it had been replaced) sofar I got only a bit more of 1 ml of ink or do I interrupt the filling process much too early?

It usually takes 5-7 pumps to fill completely.

@@InkquiringMinds Thanks a lot for the answer. An helpful info. I'm afraid there's a problem with the plastic rod. It gets stuck halfway when you push it down, meaning it doesn't return to its full length. My first aid idea: silicone oil, that seems to help for now, but on closer inspection with a magnifying glass it turns out that the rod is damaged. Apparently a "professional" had used pliers at some point to loosen the rod and damaged the plastic so badly that it became so rough that it now prevents the rod from returning to its full original position. Would you work with sandpaper/micromesh on the rod, smoothen it? I'm very hesitant because the rod looks so fragile and once it's broken it means game over.
@InkquiringMinds26 күн бұрын
@FountainPenWorld-z4i The Rod is made of celluloid so you can sand it. If it breaks, it isn’t game over. You can replace it with a brass one at Pentooling.com.

The shine one that pen is gorgeous! I have a brown/golden one with double jewels with stripes. But not everyone restores these pens up to that shine. I got the Maguire's on a couple of mine this past week but that's all I have the nerve to do. I did learn a few more things from this video. I didn't realize you could just unscrew these pens & open them up. Or that you could soak the whole pen. I have a silver/grey one I got off ebay that I was saving to send off & get restored. Halfway thru this video, I jumped up, unscrewed it & threw it in water. Now the plunger is moving freely, where before it was stuck in place & I thought it was broken. Chunks of what looks like dried ink came out & I think the diaphragm is good? The breather tube is not clogged, I blew through it, but it won't suck up ink. Maybe I'll try putting silicone on the threads...
@InkquiringMinds26 күн бұрын
If chunks came out, that is dessicated latex diaphragm. Probably needs replacing.

@InkquiringMinds Okay, thanks. I kind of figured that, but it's nice to know for sure. I didn't have a fancy diaphragm checking camera, just a flashlight & a squinty eye.

Best parts of the video were watching the body of the pen be restored and learning how the filling system actually works. Cool!

It's a compact pneudraulic, system that uses both air and liquid pressure to operate, system. I hadn't thoughts how these pens filling system worked but your explained pretty well how it does. Thanks.
