There's another version of the Jinhao, called "86" from what I remember, which is plastic with metal cap and even more similiar to the new Parker 51 than the 85. Unlike 85 it posts well and I find it a pretty good pen for the price (I think you can find them for 2 USD) and overall an improvement over the 85.

Joking aside, I adore my several genuine Parker 51s and my several several several Jinhao 51As, the WS601 and many others. I met the same section challenge. I soaked my section overnight, and it all came apart. I had the advantage of using a Vacumatic wrench on the threads - the large one. Boiling water can get a bit rich on most plastics, 80 celsius is more suitable. I hope I'm not too patronizing, I do have a couple of decades pen-repair experience, and a few ruined pens to prove it. Never give up! Interesting to learn the similarities between the 51 "reissue" and the Jinhao 85.
@InkquiringMinds4 жыл бұрын
Are you telling me you got the Jinhao 85 hood OFF? Wow, good for you! That makes some sense to me that 80C might be better than 100C. Did you heat the water to 80C put the section in and then just let it sit in cooling water overnight? I'm just interested because, even though I've destroyed this 85, I don't like being defeated! LOL
@ovebjornson78464 жыл бұрын
@@InkquiringMinds I soaked the section in room temperature, it could have been for 24 h. I then dipped it in warm 70-80 C for short periods - 1 minute - and tried to unscrew the parts. At some point the adhesive gave up and the thing came apart. I might have been lucky, but repeated heat/long soaking- sessions often does the trick. Not a pen for me, but I've once again enjoyed you taking the bullet to test something out. Thanks for that. The Bobby bent nib is interesting. I was going through my pen case last week, and found a nearly forgotten Wing Sung 618 (fully clear demonstrator version) that has the same uninteresting nib. That fine nib, almost infuriatingly, is very consistent, but it just doesn't give me a good writing enjoyment. On Bobby's etsy store I see a 0.5-0.8mm as well as a 0.6-1.2mm. Being a medium/stub nib kind of guy, I'm tempted to go with the bigger one, but I have no experience with bent nibs. I know some are intended more for drawing than for "normal writing"... Which one would you recommend? A new nib might turn the 618 back into rotation, since it's essentially a very nice piston filler, but the boring fine nib. Edit: I just found chrisrap52 did a comparison, great sommunity effort it seems ^^
@InkquiringMinds4 жыл бұрын
Bobby has a listing where you can get the variety of those nibs I think. I got the .5-.8 mm version. It is VERY similar to a Penbbs Fine mini-fude type nib. The .6-1.2mm nib is more like a traditional fude nib which can get very fat and thick.
@somnathsikdar66574 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the review. I have this pen with a fude nib and it works well. I ordered two more of these with their usual EF nibs as I expected the internal design to be similar to the Jinhao 51. Great review. As for the pen I rather liked mine - I mean, for $7 I gave for it there's nothing wrong with it. The nib on mine is very smooth and wet for a XF. If you like the aesthetic, XF nib and don't mind that it doesn't post, I'd say it's an OK pen. But as a remake of the 51 it kinda sucks. WS601 is 51 closest successor. If Parker went to Wing Sung rather than Jinhao and commission a bunch of 601s with a Parker logo then... we would get a horribly overpriced version of the 601, but likely more of a 51 than the actual 2021 51. Anyway I've seen one review of the new 51 on YT (unfortunately for most people here - in Polish). The author states that the 51 is made of precious resin (unlike the Jinhao which is metal). Also it seems that the Parker posts better than Jinhao.

Now that I have a Bobby bent nib in the pen and it writes nicely, I might actually have used it. But because the cap doesn't post, using it unposted with this type of pen is just weird. So it will be uninked today.

Hero also makes the Wing Sung 601 , 618 , 698 , 699 and the other 6XX series pens, for the company behind Wing Sung 6XX series and that company it's ( Green ), the design for those pens and the base materials are provided by Green !

A thoroughly entertaining review, as ever. Although - I thought this pen was a steal! I've been using the red version daily for about a month & the nib has a glossy feel on paper that makes it pretty nice to use. The plastic body has quite a pleasing smoothness, and its extra length is fantastically comfortable & has left me hoping it begins a trend. The cap was the only thing that disappointed me - its material feels light and cheap & out of step with that in the rest of the pen.

Instead of going through the hassle of taking the section apart, a nail clipper or scissor can be used to grip onto the nib and wiggle it out for easy swap. As for the pen, I do enjoy the caps design an the screw off cap as the usual slide on caps always feel like they either have too much resistance or not enough so that change doesn't bother me. Great review. The Parker 51 is iconic, and has several notable features which made it the prophet of the future (all of which are absent from the new version). It's as if the Parker developers and designers have not one scrap of the courage of their forebears, and instead produce a lame excuse for a classic in uninspiring, cheap-looking finishes, with a half-hooded nib, and a SCREW CAP, for goodness' sake! I don't like the 51 particularly, but I do feel sorry for it after the insult perpetrated by Parker, and I fear for what abomination they might produce to cash in on (sorry, 'honour') the 45, which I am fond of.

Actually some false information leaked into this video :D, it's true that for 95% percents of Chinese made hooded-nib pens comes with hood glued on and can be unglued as said in the vid, 4.9% percent comes with screw mounted hood, which is exclusive to recently designed and made ones. But Hero 100, is the one and only of the millions of Chinese made hooded nib pens that's both NOT glued on nor screwed on. It uses a inserted piece that screwed into the hood to hold the internal mechanism in place(from the reservoir side) that requires a proprietary tool to assemble or dissemble. EDIT: this vid is old and I guess you already knew that, but 99% of Chinese made hooded nib pens doesn't require dissemble the hood to replace the nib. You can simply use a pair of pliers to pull the nib out from the front if you don't mind damage the stock nib. And again Hero 100 is the sole exception that which nib can't be directly pulled out. Hero 100 nibs comes with a hook that keeps it inside, and only through dissemble the hood and take out the internal mechanism can it be swapped.

Just fyi, there is a model of Hero 616, called "Jumbo" or "Doctor," and it is 1:1 clone of the Parker 51. Except of course, build quality.
@InkquiringMinds4 жыл бұрын
I think I've seen that somewhere before! It would be a fixed aerometric filler as well I guess?
@hrnekbezucha4 жыл бұрын
@@InkquiringMinds Yes, it is! I kinda wish there was a well-built clone with the aerometric filler. This filling system gets a lot of well justified hate but I have a strange fondness for it. Note: I had several Hero pens and was happy with exactly zero of them. I don't have high standards, they're just not worth they few bucks. The 616 Jumbo is the best of them and it's still nowhere near the build quality of something like the Jinhao 51a base version.

That was painful to watch. It is maybe not applicable to this case, but seeing how you work... here's a tip: When you're faced with the problem of unscrewing pen parts, stuck together, from each other, be it section, finial, whatever, - do not use pliers! Do not use any kind of pliers, be they have cylindrical rubber jaws whatever! When you're using a plier - or your finger grip for that matter - close to the thread or on top of the thread, you increase the locking power of the thread, because of the pressure. Here's what you want to do instead: Make sure the pen is clean and dry. Wash it with soap of some kind to get any grease off. Then you take a roll of fresh tape. You want the common, non-elastic, clear acetate, thin office tape, like Scotch. Make sure the end of the tape is very fresh and untouched on the sticky side. Cut the end, don't tear it. Start winding the tape around the part that is hard to grip, as close to the parting as possible. Wind it on firmly, no slack except for compensating for conical shape, no bubbles. But - this is important - in the SAME DIRECTION THAT YOU WANT TO UNSCREW THE PART! Just continue patiently to wind the tape firmly around the pen part. This way you will get a small tape roll around the pen. Often, the part will come loose even before you're finished or try to twist it, just from the torque of firmly winding on the tape. How does this work? The tape grips the part with a perfectly circular, compression grip, without deforming it or cause any locking spots of pressure. At the same time the diameter - and thus the torque - increases as you build up the tape. When the diameter is twice or thrice the diameter of the pen part, it's usually easy to unscrew it, completely undamaged, with your fingers gripping lightly around the tape. You're then left with the boring task of unwinding the tape from the part. But hey, in my experience, you usually do that with a big smile on your face. You also tend to not care about having to throw away that used tape.
