I do not like hooded nibs genearlly, but I have to admit that this pen is gorgeous, great value for the price! I purchased the gold-blue as well, and the combination looks very elegant. A steal!

I don’t officially like hooded nibs either… but somehow I ended up with three of them. I guess they’re kind of something you get in the mood for every once in a while. Like how I would never eat pumpkin pie in the summer time, but… talk to me around late October, and we’re in business. I don’t ink this one as often as my traditional pens, but I don’t regret it either.

Always good to see another video from you. Don't SCARE me like that when you said, "this will be my last video on this channel..." then ending it, "with this notebook", lol, phrasing makes a difference sir! I pray you're whole family is doing well, enjoying your pens/ink/paper (whatever notebook that may be). God bless you, i look forward to all your videos!

Haha, I didn’t mean to pause at that spot! No fake out intended. I’m just probably about as sick of complaining about this sketchbook as people are probably sick of hearing me complain about it. The only reason I keep at it is because I refuse to be wasteful when I can help it! Always nice to hear from you, sir!

@@stepheninks 100% with you on efficiency of using everything. Nothing against people on KZbin, but i see them swatching inks & writing the name of the pen & ink for pages at a time; I get frustrated they arent writing anything of consequence, but it's their notebooks/paper/ink/money/time, so i cant really say anything but to my own use. God bless Stephen, always great quality stuff.

1. I may have mentioned before that I prefer Strathmore Multi Media sketchbooks. 2. I find it hard to see what I'm doing with hooded nibs. 3. I have to be satisfied with being original as I am not good. I can imagine getting closer to good by repetition, but I'd rather explore.

I’ve had that experience with hooded nibs as well. Most my my nibs are traditional for that very reason, but what can I say? I’ve become a bit of a collector in addition to an artist these days. Most of the time I have to attempt to be original, but I constantly chase technique. I don’t want to put down lines just because no one has put them down like that before. I know a lot of artists (good artists, btw) who get excited about that, but it doesn’t do it for me. This is a spoiler for my next video, but that’s totally the next sketchbook I’m testing! It’s been staring at my from my bookshelf for about 2 weeks now. Cant wait!

I have the 51A hooded and with exposed nib. I enjoy the exposed nib better. I just need to get the “feel” of the hooded. I’ve enjoyed the Pentalic Travelogue soft bound sketch books. I started with the smallest one. You have to break it in but it eventually lays flat. And you can really feel the back of the page and the front are slightly different but still both ssmooth. A lot of people like Stillman & Birn. I have a lighter weight one just for pencil drawing but they have two for pen and ink. Epsilon and Zeta are for pen and ink. Just some ideas as you keep searching.

Thanks for the suggestions! I also agree about the exposed nibs. Most of my pens are that, and going forward, most of them will remain as such.

I get into the mood for a hooded nib sometimes, but I agree that it’s not for everyone. I definitely recommend investing in something less expensive to start with and see if one likes it before investing in something more expensive.
