with the additional info and adventures, the material could easily last a bi-weekly group an entire year. this was originally an intro to role playing and is still a quality book. an all-time favorite of mine.

Back in the day, the d&d group I was in, played the 4th printing because I remember the second minotaur. I am getting ready to buy this book. Thank you for the review.

I have The Lost City and The Isle of Dread, picking this one up next. One of my players got The Expedition to the Barrier Peaks. I'm a huge fan of these books!

I saw your review and ordered one! I had bought my first Basic set in 1978. It was what we called the "Blue Book" and had module B1 "In Search of the Unknown". That started many years of AD&D with my groups in New York State having played pretty much through to 1995 (ending with 2nd Edition). This last year I finally picked up 5e and was thrilled to see your recent review. Keep up the good work!

Yeah as far as I'm aware, Holmes Basic came with B1 and Moldvay Basic came with B2

@@18ps3anos I also have in my possession in my office a Holmes with Dice that has B2. My original 1978 box had the chits that you cut out. At least some of those later printing must have had B2 because I own one.

Love these retakes on the classic modules, if nothing else, this is a good means to get a physical copy of the original module itself.

Good review Glad they’re converting some of these old modules

I very much would LOVE to have Goodman Games do a Palace of the Silver Princess book with both the Orange AND Green cover versions. They were like two completely different modules. If you combined the best elements of both books you'd have a very creative and challenging adventure.

I've wanted to get these Goodman Games books for awhile now! These look incredible! Thanks for the review. I just wish they were a tad cheaper.

Yeah, the only reason I bought them is because the store selling them was charging about $20 less than what the Canadian Price should be based on conversion from USD to CAD.

DravenSwiftbow That’s awesome! They are really cool books and I’d love to have them on my shelf. I think there’s 4 or 5 of them by now, right?

The 4th book comes out this summer and is all about B4: The Lost City. The other 2 are Ilse of Dread and Expedition to the Barrier Peaks. Barrier Peaks was the one I wanted the most, but each book is numbered so I knew my OCD would eat me alive if I had Book 3, but not 1 or 2.

DravenSwiftbow I’d love to eventually get all of them. My local hobby shop has the first 2 but they marked them up. I might just order directly from Goodman if they have that on their website.

That's what I would recommend, I hate when stores mark up In Print items. There was one store where I use to live that never priced anything and based their prices on the maximum possible ebay listing prices. Needless to say I never bought anything from them

Great review. I liked how you addressed value to both old school players and new players at the end, nice adder.

I kind of like the big mostly empty section intro pages -- it's give a strong impression of starting a new and separate section.

Funny how Goodman Games took 32 pages of the B1 Mod and 32 pages of the B2 Mod and made them into 500+ pages. :-D

Beautiful looking book! Takes me back to my "younger days". I also agree 100% on your comment about leveling up, & how it used to feel like an accomplishment. I've been in several campaigns that ended after level 10-15. it just took SO LONG... also, a little of topic... I can't hear the word Minotaur with out thinking of the movie Role Models... MINOTUAR! Thanks for another great video!

Man I would love to see you cover some of the 2nd ed Ravenloft modules as well as the VanRichten guides. I have seen so many people cover the original Ravenloft module or curse of Strahd but nobody covers the other awesome books which is strange as well as the IP is loved!

Love this old module, but (maybe by now you've found out for yourself, after listening to you talk about the levels) this is NOT an adventure for 5e levels 1-3. I am running 7 players. I had to dumb down even the 1st cave down. 1 character still died. And after 1 cave of goblins....2nd level, for 6 PC's. This is not the adventures fault. The moment I picked up a PHB I did not like how fast the levels were. And from what I hear most players just start at level 3 anyway. Then they move on to the 2nd cave with Kobolds....3rd level. Well does that mean they are done? no you might as well populate both the caves and the fortress and play as high of levels as you want. Even at 3rd level if the PC's walk into the wrong cave they are dead. one room has 24 skeletons and 24 zombies all piled into the same room. Ya the PC's could probably funnel them but still. one room has something like 18 Orcs in it. This is a straight conversion, not a "lets take into account encounter ratings". Which is odd, because I do remember you had to populate the rooms yourself. If you do not adjust things and without some creative DM'ng your PC's will die. But on a good note, if you populate them yourself, this could basically be a campaign. just put harder and harder monsters in the encounters. And with the expanded encounters there is a lot here. It is just not for levels 1-3 in 5e. I have the other ones as well. I'm hoping they even out. #6 Temple of Evil is event based so maybe it works better for levels 1-7ish.

Great review, I personally think it hits home with the old AD&D players... So for me having both versions is great... Do you still play other versions of DnD??? I want to play some 4e, but my group really doesn't like going back and forth... I've even tried to get a 1e going again, but to no avail... Anyway love the videos keep em coming!!!

As someone who only starting playing RPGs in the last two years, I'm interested in playing some older modules converted to fifth edition. I may have to check these books out if they ever come back in stock in the Uk.
@DravenSwiftbow4 жыл бұрын
They are a great way to explore D&D's History, especially with the 5E conversion since it can be quite jarring to go from 5th Edition back to something AD&D or D&D Basic/Expert

I think that you'd be surprised that playing with the older editions is not that obsolete as many newcomers think and actually complement these older modules way better in terms of style and feel. The most popular and accessible way of approaching the Basic/Expert edition is getting the basic rules for Old School Essentials. It's free and the layout is so friendly and perfect for newcomers, even those who never played any TTRPG before. Also, there's a good read called "A quick primer for old school gaming" that really helps shifting the mentality and getting the most out of old school play.

$60+ dollars for an adventure for levels 1 to 3 is excessive no matter what it is. I appreciate the work that was put in to make it but this is not for me although I would buy this for no more than $30 dollars. The original version is unnecessary, I would only want the 5e version.
@BlackJar724 жыл бұрын
I don't think its something you get purely for the adventure so much as for the history and nostalgia -- and perhaps a lesson on how old school adventures worked for those who haven't experience it.
@briancherry80883 жыл бұрын
I agree. But, at least this edition is 2 adventures.

@edlaprade4 жыл бұрын
Nope, nope, nope... a total cash grab! That was my thought when they first showed up. 500 pages for two 32 page conversions, at $50? Rip off! Nostalgia was definitely at the forefront of their thinking, I believe. Good for that, and for those who wanted to see some of the old stuff. But for me, with a rather tight budget, who owns one of them (and has played/run it several times) not so much. I think they would have done much better it they'd cut the page count, and price, in half. But that's just me.
@DravenSwiftbow4 жыл бұрын
The value comes from the 5th Edition conversions which expands on the originals which takes up nearly 200 pages, plus the Essays and Interview make for a great read as well. For me it was easier to justify the price since I didn't pay the normal Canadian Retail price(I saved nearly $20), in fact for me it was cheaper than most of the official Wizards D&D 5E Books. I do agree that having two printings of both Modules wasn't the best use of some of those pages. Ultimately though I can understand if the US Price is too high for what this is.
@edlaprade4 жыл бұрын
@@DravenSwiftbow Oh, to be sure. If it hadn't had so much redundancy I might have gotten it. But with conversions from 1E to 5E being relatively easy, if you have done it for other stuff, it really wasn't worth it at the price. Sad, really, but what can you do?
