Ok so this honestly answered the question as to why I appreciate my stippling artwork more than my solid work. You basically described the natural values and I’m like “oh. So that’s obvious as hell but I get it now” I draw with some stippling mixed in with a low pixel canvas so it’s close to pixel art at a 680x800. So to answer your question, absolutely it doesn’t help with tattooing because the art I’m doing is tattoo grunge work. Heavy blacks and since tattoos technically are created by fast stippling by a machine it makes so much sense with the paper! You blew my mind 😂😂 Answering my question without knowing I needed it

Beginner here and I got this paper in a Paletteful Pack some time in the past year. I played with it but didn’t really understand it. Thank you for the video, I think I have a better understanding of this and am excited to pull it out again and give it another try.

Awesome, glad it helped. The paper is pretty interesting, but I think you do have to use it in a certain way to make the most of it.

I have seen this paper and wondered just how good it is. The demo of colored pencil made me think it would not be for me. I did stipple is calss years ago and loved it. It is just to hard on the hands to do it now. Thank you for your vidoes.

I agree. Stippling is beautiful and very satisfying. You just have to be very patient but the end results pay off. I even tried a battery powered stippling pen that speeded things up a bit but had problems with control.

As a tattoo artist , think the makers are just trying to cash in on tattoo artists , as we see a lot … how ever the texture of the paper might mimic actual skin as a canvas .. Great video :)

This style of drawing was most used in print for black and white art. The art would print with black blacks and did not need to go through the halftone process in order to go to press. Litho film for press sees black or white so this crow could be printed in a magazine or paper quite well and the values could hold up. Using the art reduced or enlarged could create issues, the first too thin of white or black lines to hang onto on press or when blown up the art would have the texture exaggerated. Litho pencils were often used. It was a technique taught in commercial art classes probably up to the full adoption of art on computers. If you created an overlay on the crow you could create black lines by double burning the art together or use the overlay to separate the art to have two different plates for color. Creating the overlay you would put registration marks on both so you you could easily register the film so the art would print correctly. Look at older magazine B&W spot drawings and you should be able to find a lot of this style art. Nice to know where to find the paper. I remember getting illustration board with craquelure texture. (I think that was what they called it -- was a while ago. Someday I will have to see if I still have an old drawing and can look on the back for grins and giggles).

Hi really informative video. Was given a carbon pencil to try once and found it horrible to use, just seemed to drag and wasn't as smooth as graphite, but that was a few years ago so maybe they are better now. I can see how using a textured paper like this could be used in a number of ways and with a lot of different mediums to create a textured look. I always emboss the texture I want into the paper and then work back over the top. but this is very time consuming. Thanks again for another great video.

There’s stippling paper?
@sketchshinaver21372 жыл бұрын
OK Matt it’s stippling paper what happens when you use it to actually do stipple art with ink
@thevirtualinstructor2 жыл бұрын
You can stipple on this paper too, just like any other drawing paper. But, the texture of the paper is what makes this surface unique and this surface may be best utilized when using a medium that reveals its texture. Traditional pen and ink stippling won't do this. However, mediums like graphite and charcoal will.

@@thevirtualinstructor what about using ink wash on it?
@thevirtualinstructor2 жыл бұрын
@@gunsmokeandghouls I think you're better off using ink wash on a water-absorbant paper like watercolor paper. It would be difficult to develop smooth or even transitions of value with a watery medium on this surface.

*SO, IF SOMEONE ASKED OR IF YOU WERE GOING TO EXPLAIN WHAT YOU DID WITH THAT PAPER, WHAT'RE YOU GONNA SAY/HOW ARE YOU GONNA ANSWER THEM? IS IT "STIPPLED" OR "DRAWN" LOL* Or is it "drawn to make it look like it was stippled"? That's kinda weird tho lol Bc the end result isn't the only thing matters, it includes the process. I also wonder if an art student were told to do a "stippled art" and did this technique (in the video) instead, and the teacher found out, would they accept it, or deduct his scores, get punishment etc? I won't tell any more details, y'all know those..
@thevirtualinstructor2 жыл бұрын
Hi jeph. I'm not sure when or why this would ever happen at any other time other than a KZbin comment section, but I would say "it's a drawing". The paper simply creates a texture that is similar to what you get when stippling with ink. When you create a drawing, you should be more concerned with the aesthetic success of the finished work - not with the process that you used. Stippling is a drawing process that leads to specific look when the drawing is complete. You don't create a "stipple" - you create a drawing. This paper helps you achieve a similar look without making dots. Keep in mind that the point of creating art is to produce an artifact (or performance) that expresses a subject in a unique, emotional, representational, or abstract manner using whatever medium that best suits the artist. You don't get extra points for spending more time making dots. Some people will really like the effect this paper creates. I am one of those people and I think the paper is quite interesting.
