I like to separate the lights and shadows first and then put in the darkest darks. It is a good idea to put those darkest darks before you start working on the halftones, so that you can judge the subtle values better. Filling in an initial value layer is personal i think.

Your drawings really help me understand how body parts work. I use to not pay attention to body parts such as legs and arms. I was always wondering what I was doing wrong. I would either make the arms too long or legs too short or face proportions too long or close together and it didn't look right. so I remembered my old art teacher from highschool recommending you and I looked up your channel and watched a video and drew off of it and the outcome was amazing. Thank you. Your art is amazing and so are you.

@Miserableplace
@Miserableplace 6 жыл бұрын
It is a Conté à Paris Pierre Noire 1710. Comes in various grades. Proko uses a 2B I think. It is a buttery soft pencil more like a very very soft color pencil and not so dusty like a charcoal pencil.

Kudos for an excellent, excellent presentation! The side by side allows me to see exactly how you as an artist captures form, then refines it to the finished product. I will study this many times until I "catch on" how to paint what I see, not what I think i see. Would love to see a similar presentation of your doing a portrait, or even a landscape. Thank you so much for this innovative tutorial!

It interests me the way you lay in shadows. When I was in Drawing II, I was told constantly to always lay in my "blackest blacks" and "whitest whites" before any other shading, is this something that you agree with? You seem to work with midrange shadows fairly early. Also I was told to always start with an initial charcoal layer on the page, are these mostly things for a full illustration only, or is it more a matter of individual preference?

I feel like you aren't pushing the forms as much as you should be. You're inventing your own forms, and simplifying them. Your drawing didn't have as much of a faceted surface as the reference. That said, I'm really in love with your pencil illustrations. They're great!
@jimmy3070
@jimmy3070 7 жыл бұрын
There are people who strive to draw everything exactly as they see it (human photo copy machines) KZbin is full of videos like that. Personally I feel that isn't much of a skill. They are slaves to their reference as many of them only possess a superficial knowledge of what they are looking at. They follow it like a paint by numbers and every color, shadow and line goes exactly where it needs to be to get the reaction "woahhh, that looks like a photograph". The school of art to which Stan belongs is one where deep knowledge and understanding of form, lighting, anatomy, etc is what they strive for. This allows them much freedom in their art. Like Jeffrey Watts says. something along the lines of, "a good drawing is based on what you know, what you saw, and what you wish you saw" In other words, knowing enough to be able to invent over what you see in the reference, or in Stan's case, simplifing that which he deems unnecessary to over complicate/render.
