I always hated the circus, but one elephant caught my eye in our hometown circus. A baby elephant named Ellie poked her trunk on my nose making her be my favorite. Eventually Ellie passed away when she got sat on by another giant elephant. Poor Ellie.

When I was very little we went to a circus, I rode an elephant that day. Her name was Papaya. Years later they banned the use of animals in the circuses of Mexico. I always hope that Papaya survived to that day and is somewhere in a happy place.

I remembered going to a circus in Thailand when I was a kid. They had elephants, bears, and sea lions doing tricks and even then I was asking myself "why do they have to make them to that?" I was on vacation with my family and we had joined a tour group. The circus was one of their stops as were several zoos where the animals looked really unhappy in their tiny cages. Imagine spending your entire life in a room the size of a broom closet that you're not allowed to leave. You eat there, you sleep there, you go to the bathroom on the very floor you eat and sleep on. Now, I've learned that there are plenty of circuses out there that don't use animals at all and only focus on human performers, and it's always amazing to see what they can do too. I was so amazed that I even signed up for an aerial silks class at one time, as it had always been my favourite act to watch because it is so elegant.

I was taken to a circus once when I was about 6 years old and I've never gone back, and never forgotten the experience, the sounds, smells, sights. To me, it was horrible what they did to the tigers and lions to make them entertain people. It made me cry with sadness. I was so NOT entertained, just horrified!

I had to go to a ringling brothers show for school but unlike my friends I knew the truth about what they did to those poor animals. I was actually sitting next to my teacher and I booed the whole time. My classmates looked at me weird but then I saw that one of the lions went after the trainer and he whipped it and that was my breaking point. I completely screamed at the trainer and cheered on the lion to finish me lol. After the show I also saw that the lions were kept in so small cages they could barely fit. I wish I never went but now they shut down which I am so glad about.

I went to a circus as a 3rd grader, unaware of the true turmoil the animals went through for months, just to provide a night of entertainment. I didn’t know, I wish I did, I would’ve refused to go. Looking back, the saddest was towards the end, several trainers pulled up in carts with several animals chained to them. I thought it was cute at the time, now I’m mortified. Another thing I find disturbing now was one of the elephants was dressed up as a mammoth. The theatre by my town can get hot and it was pretty hot at the time. I can’t imagine how she felt. I will never go to a circus again.
