DRAW THIS AGAIN - PERIDOT 2015 vs 2017! 👽 ✨ 💫

Those who are discussing and commenting whether I've improved or not, I'll make a comment and pin it! About the face - personally I loved the face in the old one but I don't draw like that any more, so even though I attempted to recreate it it wasn't working. About the style and the shading, I haven't done digital art properly SINCE the time of the first one, I trailed off almost entirely around the start of 2016. Therefore the approach and technique hasn't improved much and I found it hard to apply my traditional techniques. I know I have improved in my confidence and approach in general because I'm the one who drew both of them. I struggled a lot with the first one and her body language shows a lack of openness and confidence that I didn't have and Peridot does, it doesn't work. The eyes are jarring in 2017 as that's how I draw eyes on SU characters - so I gotta keep developing if I wanna get back into digital art! Thanks for all your feedback guys, I don't appreciate rudeness but I will always value constructive feedback. If you're looking for somewhere to be mean then please kindly chose a different channel ^_^

The fact that you had to put this is a bit of an indicator, I have to say. However, there is also the issue of how you literally traced over the old image instead of drawing from scratch and reused a face you drew from another image. I feel like that isn't much improvement.

You've improved quite a bit! It seems your style has changed a bit, more cartoony. The shading seems quite a bit nicer. More well blended, and perhaps a bit softer? Her overall body shape seems a lot more natural in the newer piece. The old piece has sort of a strange stretched body, the upper part seeming to thin compared to her hips. But in the newer painting the width seems much more evenly distributed between the torso and hips. Her facial expression seems so much more full of life in the newer piece. Maybe its because of the bright colors? Like you said, the older painting didn't seem to portray her correctly. But this one seems to have characterize her perfectly. I have to admit, the background on the old painting was quite bland. (Although a pretty shade of purplish pink) However this paintings background is quite visually pleasing to look at. Overall, The new paintings colors, background, shading, and general vibe is stunning. And even though I harked on it quite a bit, (Which I apologize) the older version is quite nice as well. The only thing that I can think of on what to improve, is perhaps you could make the background a bit more interesting to look at? Not too much, seeing as (most of the time) we want the main focus to be on the character. But maybe you could have added a homeworld ship in the distance? I may sound like I'm nit-picking, but I'm just struggling to find things you may improve on! Sorry if this was long, I was suddenly feeling analytical ^^' I really love your art! I wish nothing but the best for you.

Reflex Gaming this is actually a really good analysis! the only thing i can add is that some of the shading looks sort of blocky in some places on the new one - eg on her stomach it looks like two rectangles which could of been blended/softened more.

Thank you! This was actually my first time ever going really in-depth, so I'm glad I did a decent job. I do see what you mean, It could have been a bit more well blended. But looking at it from afar, it doesn't really seem to matter that much. However, up close it does seem quite apparent. Thank you for your input!

I was getting to a point where there was a lot of weird negative feedback and arguments online about this and it was actually souring my experience with it, so I wanted to get it over with quicker...like I noticed too late that I didn't finish shading the arms too bahaha.

I think you've definitely improved on the anatomy and proportions, as well as capturing the likeness of Peridot! I also like the rendering of the hair on the new one. I really get the feel of the shape while the first one is a little flat. Improvement is improvement, whether you feel it may be big or small because it means you are moving forward in your art journey! And I feel you definitely improved!

You have improved a lot in your use of color and lighting! It looks way more visually appealing and authentic than the first one did (there wasn't anything wrong with it per se, but the white background was a little bland, the lavender just spices it up more)! Honestly, congratulations on improving so much! I'm working on my (very lackluster) lighting and color-matching skills currently as well, so it makes me really hopeful to see someone that has improved this much! ❤

You've definitely improved since the first digital painting, ESPECIALLY considering that you're trying to get back into digital painting (digital art)!!! There's more variety in the colours and colour values that you used, making it pop a lot more the original, with the background adding to this. You got Peri's body shape a lot more accurate here than before and you made the lighting and shadows more defined! Awesome job!! :D

I like both your traditional and digital work, but one thing you should do next time is to add a bit of shading to the whites of the eyes it will help them "blend" more with the rest of the piece. Hope to see more videos like this in the future!

I do like the new one and I think you've improved a little, especially considering you stopped digital art for a while. The only thing that really stood out to me is that you did her visor white instead of yellow-green. But the expression is a lot better and the coloring looks a lot nicer. So, good job!

To me she did improve a lot. I like that she did more with the background. She has more of an expression in the new drawing. The shading has improved. I think the face, and the hair have improved also. It looks really nice. 😍

Shape, body anatomy, and personality are a hella lot better on the second one, expression is lovely. Though I really wish the yellow light was harsher on her metal arm thingymajig to show the lighting from beneath, and more shadow on the shoulders and under the armpit. I think the gem and her shades could be rotated like... 15 degrees clockwise to fit perspective but otherwise you've improved a lot on anatomy, clothing, and arm thingymajigs. Keep on drawing and improving!

Ik ive said this on your ig but ill expand on i truly do believe youve improved a whole lot!! The way you drew peridots body has more dimension and it looks more realistic than your old one especially with your coloring!! To me it seems there's a better sense of depth and and colour; and a better sense of shapes in the newer version. And overall feels a lot more like Peridot, it really shows a lot more of her personality through the pose and expression. Congrats on so much improvement!

you really improved on the colors and coloring. the old picture was 2 seperate stuff... peridot and the background. but the new one you really made one picture out of those 2 stuff. background and peridot is one illustration because you made the colors effect each other, like you put blues on the shading and yellows on the lights, which is the same as the background (i don't know if you understand what I mean but oh well) good job!

You definitely improved a lot. Little critique though: there is a lack of anatomical symmetry in both, even in the new one. It's especially noticeable in the face. Symmetry wise; the first one was actually better, in the face anyway. More specifically, the hair lines up on the face very awkwardly, and while the jaw goes up very far. It may have been for style, but even stylized art usually should still follow anatomy rules. The teeth/jaw just seem very crooked. When drawing faces, it always helps to have a reference photo of a human face on hand, even for stylized work. It gives you a genuine visual of where things go, so you can then stylize from there. In my experience, the work always ends up better with the use of a reference. It's good to admit you don't know what you are doing then pretend you do, especially with any sort of creative hobby, cooking, drawing etc. I would also recommend practicing drawing faces/bodies from reference for any and every artist out there. It will help a lot.

Marcus Gage I do use reference all the time - you don't see it here mostly because I have a second monitor for reference. If you're referring to the direction of her mouth, I pushed the anatomy to be more exaggerated and cartoonish as that's the direction my work has taken. I often study anatomy and from there I can exaggerate more. I did have a lot of issues with the symmetry of the eyes, but I'm actually kinda happy with the mouth, as it's a lot more expressive than the old one.

I can really see a more confident shift in this piece as far as defined lines and brush strokes go and the body shape is stronger too! I really like the colouring also its more ...mature...? The colors are definitely more lively in your new piece! But I do enjoy the old piece a little bit better. I like the smoothness of the old pieces blending better, like the hair for an example, but I like the highlights and the shading of the new ones better. I also think the head could also be worked on. It's not really noticeable in the old piece, but in the new piece, the head should be more to the right of the neck, not to the left. I can say that you have definitely improved in a lot of places, and I can't wait to see your future pieces! (did i sound rude? i hope i didnt lol)

I think you improved greatly on everything else but her face. Don't get me wrong, you draw great, but I think the face needs a little more detail. Just a smidge. Other than that, your background and shading is nice (especially with the blending), and over all it's great
