I think that everybody always says "don't give up", without actually saying how to keep going. For some people, looking at other people's art is the most destructive thing to do. And when somebody tells them "you can't give up!" They end up feeling worse about their art than before. It's true that you have to keep going, but to find motivation to keep going and find a way to motivate yourself to keep going is actually the source of the problem. By saying "dont give up" you are treating the symptom, not the disease.

If someone tells me why he shouldn't give up I always reply that he isn't forced on doing anything. He can give up, but he wants to? If you feel that you don't like doing this and are sure you will never regret this choice, than, go ahead, give up!
@W0rdn1nja6 жыл бұрын
I agree so I found my own solution to the stupid platitude of "don't give up." I keep 6 folders full of unfinished projects. When I'm in a sunny bright mood, there's all that colorful art that needs more work. In a 2nd folder, I've put in all my black and white works. This is broken down further into pencil, charcoal and pen & ink. Then colored pencils. Then I keep 2 large folders. 1 for living things like people and animals and another for inanimate objects. Most importantly is a list of each thing i want to correct/improve on each of these pictures. Depending on that day's lighting and my personal mood, I can apply myself to anyone of these because SOMETHING is bound to mesh with the lighting, mood style or lack of inspiration I feel that day. That's how I don't give up. If I can't do color that day, i'll do black n white. If my portraits suck atm, then i'll do a landscape. Other times, I want to organize what needs improvement so I use printer paper and do things like practicing how to draw noses, animal fur, tree textures, etc. So if you're told 'don't give up' I hope maybe even 1 of my suggestions helps a fellow artist. (p.s. the word "habits,' has only 1 B...

When I was a freshmen in highschool, my art teacher noticed I was alot better than anyone in my school so she pushed me to pursue art more than just a hobby. The first time I took AP Studio art as a freshmen , I disliked my portfolio because it was filled with good art, but not my style because she wanted me to replicate other artists. She believed realism was the easiest way to pass, I did pass but with a 3 out of 5. I won many contests and got many compliments because so many people liked my realism artwork. But I took a break for a year and took AP Drawing in my second semester of my senior year. By that time my art teacher believed I was able to pass without using other artist's style so I used everything from my sketchbook and passed with a 5 out of 5. Finding your own style is better than using someone else's because your work would look so much better if you are able to pour all your heart and skills to make something you are proud of. I wished someone would of told me that before.

I used to draw ALL the time last year. Then i became very self conscious and i hated my art. For 7 months i stopped drawing and said i "was bad at it" even though i wasn't. I was also moving across seas and i didn't have enough time to draw. A few weeks ago a kid told me at school "Why do you say you can't draw, but you want to be an animator when you grow up? It makes no sense" and i hate this kid but he pretty much helped me get back into art.I thought about what he said and i noticed that i can't give up. So i started to draw again and i am SO happy that i did So if you feel discouraged at all, just don't give up. Keep on trying

@matthewriegner51806 жыл бұрын
I've run in some pretty heavy circles of artists and despite all the love and respect we have for each other, there is a healthy amount of competition between all of us. We're always trying g to make something cooler than the next, but we'll always be there to tell them how we did it, share tip and tricks, be supportive, and try to lift each other up. Being competitive and using that to fuel you is not a bad thing. There will be times doing something out of spite or to prove someone wrong will show you how much you're capable of and afterwards probably be grateful for how they pushed you even if the person was being an a$$.
@elsagrace38936 жыл бұрын

Go into a musical. When you listen to one musical, you get sucked in. I recommend: The Phantom Of The Opera The Book Of Mormon Wicked Hamilton (I will shoot any annoying fangirls in this thread) 21 Chump Street The Comet of 1812 Phantom Of The Opera(the story is so fierce, it may stir up some drawing ideas inside) Heathers In The Heights Others are saying: Be More Chill (Never heard it yet) My favorite musical is Dear Evan Hansen but it's mostly dialogue so you'd need to open up a Wikipedia page along with a website of the lyrics to get understand it. Also, for motivation, listen to Wait For It (hamilton soundtrack ) and Heart Of Courage by Two Steps From Hell. Listen to ANYTHING by Two Steps From Hell, actually. It's one of those things that each song makes you feel a different way. It paints a picture in your mind and that's good for painting. Same Linsy Striling. Other recommendations include: Owl City Christina Perri SARA BARELLIES (Used To Be Mine is my favorite song ever) Kelly Clarkson (People Like Us is my favorite from her) Sia Coldplay Paramore Echosmith Imagine Dragons The Script (also great motivation) Bon Jovi Panic! At the disco (I will shoot any annoying fangirls) Beyonce American Authors Sleeping at Last is hella relaxing and deep P!nk Ellie Golding Songs: Something like This (Coldplay+Chainsmokers) Airplanes (B.o.B) Coming Home (Second one I think) Home (Phillip something) Living on a prayer- Bon Jovi Kk long list. I have this problem. If it's become a habit to start but not finish, then every time you do it, you reinforce it and become more discouraged. Here's an idea: maybe try an art style that allows you to finish a piece really quickly, and do that for a while, to break the pattern and give you the satisfaction of having finished pieces. I'm having a lot of fun with Bob Ross tutorials just now, getting a whole oil painting finished in one sitting, 3 to 4 hours, it's incredibly satisfying and is helping to break a LONG streak of not finishing things. You could do something like that, or maybe really small pictures, simplified pictures, something like that.

I have some pretty annoying attention issues (investigating the possibility of ADHD) combined with tinnitus, so I NEED background noise to get anything done. However, in order to get anything done, I need to be able to tune out my background noise, so new episodes of podcasts, music and plot-heavy shows don't work for me. So, when I need to do something, I put on reruns of shows I've seen a million times. Since I already know what happens (probably know the episode word for word tbh) I don't get distracted by paying attention to the show, but I also am not being driven crazy by the ringing in my ears. And since I have some attention issues, it's actually detrimental to my productivity if I have no distractions at all (decipher that catch-22, lol) so something moving on a screen that I can flick my eyes away to for a second makes me feel much more comfortable. In the end, I barely ever get distracted by my shows! Just goes to show, habits like these are all very subjective!

I often use trace poses I like in ny sketch and then draw over it with tge character I'm drawing... I've been studying proportions and other things at the same time, so for me it is helping, however I also feel at a disadvantage whenever I don't have a reference. I know I'm going to have to start dropping my reference tracing, but only when I feel a little more confident. I would suggest that you find a good balance between tracing and freehanding it.
@rohab7 жыл бұрын
thanks for the responses ! Yeah I see how it's only a matter of time till I let go references, I only do art as a hobby and I'm just waiting till I get my style. I always find it interesting listening to what people believe "cheating" is in art
@doodlepumo6237 жыл бұрын
No no referencing is great!! It's how you learn. Eventually you'll be able to easily draw what you used to need to trace, and then you can put your own spin on it and everything just goes from there. Art is a spiraling subject, so everything you learn only builds on itself. The only "cheating" in art is when you copy or trace something that's not yours and claim that it is
@antaliquetran69447 жыл бұрын
Not a professional artist or anything, but here's a bit of advice from what I've picked up over the years, whether through tutorials on deviantArt/KZbin or just from personal experience! Tracing: Good type of tracing: I use this often to kind of learn the anatomy of different things. For example, I had to draw a manatee once for my club t-shirt. Instead of just going off of reference photos, I decided to take several reference pictures into Photoshop. Then, I traced over the head and body, simplifying them into shapes. From there, I was able to draw my own manatee in its own pose since I knew roughly what its anatomy was like. Bad type of tracing: Tracing over someone else's drawing and changing colors, clothing, hair, etc. just to make it "yours." This doesn't help you to improve at all-you're only copying the lines and not learning the structure of the drawing underneath. Heavily using references: Don't be afraid to use references! Artists are HUGE on references-you can't trust your own brain to know everything. Use them for poses, how clothing works (folds and such), hair, etc. The only time I would consider it bad is if you took someone else's drawing as a "reference," and just ended up copying everything just with different color schemes or clothing. Here's one of my favorite tutorials on references! slimeattackk.deviantart.com/art/Tutorial-14-Photoref-to-make-the-difference-286581045 As long as you are adding your own creativity, style, etc. into it, I wouldn't worry about references. If anything, I would recommend you to use more references. It makes such a difference in your art. Don't worry about forcing yourself to draw without one; it will come with time. Hope this helped a bit !!

I've been thinking about getting into digital art and I was gonna buy a drawing tablet, but where I live there's not a wide choice of them. But I had found the perfect tablet for my needs and it was super cheap compared to others, but I couldn't buy it due to my personal life problems, so I asked my mom if she could buy it for my birthday (witch is in less then a mounth). But the tablet was sold out (it was a model that's not in production anymore, so they had it in stock for a few years now) and both of us were dissapointet. The other tablets are either super expencive, ir they are super small. So I suggest that we both practice on paper, and hope that we once save up. And try not to get discouraged, like I have. You don't know if something good is gonna come out from something bad, it may take time but have hope :) Sorry if I spell something wrong English is not my first language.

Number 3 is hard to avoid when your 14 so many tell me my art is good but when i show people a random unknown artist's art vs. my art they will always choose the other artist, ive tried so hard to find a style or a way to draw that i can be proud of but its honestly so hard, everyone picks realism over cartoony and pick things made with water colors or copics over sharpies *sigh* i come from a very poor family so i cant get the best supplies but its just so hard not to compare my art with others so much that i stop drawing for months because of how discouraged i get. Is there anyway to help it? I always try to love my art but theres nothing about it that i can like especially when my mom and sister are both amazing artists. I want to make them proud but its so hard to get out of the habbit of compairing my art with theirs and others any way to help?
@seratru77077 жыл бұрын
Fabled Wolf Jack Instead of drawing for others and stressing etc. Just draw for yourself and enjoy it, I used to always draw for others and I used to think they are better than me >.< but I started drawing everyday and I got better and better. If you still think your drawings are bad just maybe take a break from art and try again later. Usually after you have a break you will realise how good your drawings are

Hey, I'm a senior in high school and dealt with a lot of self doubt and laziness over the years. Now I have to work my ass off to improve as much as possible in my last year so I can get into art school prepared. It's even harder now too because I have as much stress as before, plus that with the new work I have to do and being depressed over lost time. Don't waste your time like I did.
@ranch50947 жыл бұрын
Fabled Wolf Jack y'know the only thing you can really do is make more art. Bad art, good art, strange art, weird art, swirly art, any art. You can't change people's opinions and you can make art with anything. As long as you make art and practice, you'll improve. Now go make some art fren
@anonymouslysvein18467 жыл бұрын
Really, just think about the future. Not in a discouraging way or anything of the sort, but 14 is young. Of course some other artist are gonna be 'better' than you at that age. Even if they're younger. What other people say are their own opinion, and honestly, some people probably thought Picasso sucked when he was 14. So, that's something to think about. Art is art no matter. But you won't improve over night. It DOES take consistensy. Also, just a tip. Don't look at other artist as competition. Look at them as opportunities to learn. It helps LOTS
@TheDeadBrick7 жыл бұрын
Fabled Wolf Jack Hey man, don't worry about the media of your work, one of my favorite artists uses ONLY bic pens. You can make cool stuff with any tool if you practice enough- I can't stress that enough, PRACTICE. I was not a great artist two years ago when I was 14, nor did I practice enough. Honestly, looking and comparing my work to better artist MADE me better. It's okay to compare if it motivates you instead of making you give up. And people only pick realism over cartoon because they think it's harder or more prestigious, when in reality they can both equally be as difficult. Cartoon begs for creativity which is just as difficult as doing a traditional pencil portrait. Do you, and practice it.

The silence is just so calming and lets me spread my ideas out on the table, it helps me focus. Plus, nothing’s there to distract me. But I guess someone could say the same but with music.
