MrAnperm I’m glad he does remember and is willing to share his knowledge with us. I love drawing but it’s only a hobby; occasionally I’ll watch a video such as this one and realize that sometimes the most useful tip or information isn’t about proportions, and shading but, staying motivated, being inspired and developing passion for art . Yeah man, I glad he remembers. 👍🏽

Holy Smokes! I was in a drawing class taught by Gustav Rehberger at the Art Students' League in NYC back in the early 80s and I remember Tim Gula being a student in that class off and on. I never knew him, but he brought in some comics pages he drew that he showed to a couple of the other students. I watched over their shoulders and his drawings were amazing! I remember him as young, longish hair, looking like a surfer or something. Boy, time speeds by so fast !

This guy has a lot of wisdom, I think a lot of people assume artists have some type of innate power to create realistic imagery from their mind with no effort, which completely overlooks the ammount of time and work that goes in to learning how to draw and observe, and its the observational aspect that is the most important IMO. An artist doesn't learn to draw, they learn to see.

It's entirely fascinating, at least to me, that gesture drawing is such a powerful tool, and a foundation to good drawing. Kimon Nicolaides book emphasizes that, with fully excellent results for the reader. "The shape, the weight, the rhythm." Brilliant. Thank you.

I truly feel compelled to thank you, Proko. Your channel re-ignited my love for art and never fails to leave me inspired. Watching and listening to Tim work and his insight on fashion design- if you'd have asked me this time last year, I'd have never imagined fashion design could leave me with my mouth agape, Rene Gruau's art was utterly breathtaking. This probably hasn't come out half as legible as it feels to me and in some ways it's more of a therapeutic open thank you letter to art in general and how much I feel its helped me develop as a person.

Tim Gula has done more than anyone else to improve my drawing than anyone else. He used to come over to my house when I lived in Los Angeles and say get your stuff, we're going to the zoo today to draw animals, or call me and say he was substitute teaching at an art school and go to room whatever and we'll be doing life drawing all afternoon in Pasadena. In this video, Tim never mentions working with the two greatest comic artists -- Jack Kirby and Moebius. He also worked with Neal Adams (Neal told me himself, not Tim). He also worked on Batman The Animated Series and designed backgrounds for the Asgard in the Thor movie. Not only one of the last great anatomy and life drawing teachers, he's also one of the funniest people I've ever met.

It is good to hear the purpose behind this type of drawing. In art school, gesture wasn't clear to me. I tried to cram a lot of information rather than get a flow. This and Proko's use of CSI lines helped simplify and streamline my gestures. In other words it took a while to learn that I shouldn't focus on defining volume or structure, and moreso describe the action.

Thank you Proko for all your wonderful, enlightening interviews! As an accomplished artist in your own right, you get to the core spirit that moves the artist and the art. Tim Gula, my heartfelt thanks to you for providing not only an exceedingly practical approach that can be universally applied as technique, I believe, but also showing the way to relaxing and allowing the universe within to emerge through the individual. Thank you my brothers in art!

Thanks Proko! It’s so wonderful to see these great videos. I took a figure quick sketch class from Tim Gula for a couple of years in Thousand Oaks. He’s prodigiously talented, dedicated, inspiring, and really funny. He’s also pretty stunning at head drawing. I’d love to see more from Tim. I also took Glen Orbik’s head drawing class there. What a privilege to learn from these great teachers. I miss that school so much. I will watch this over and over.

Great work Stan. Tim is exceptional, he pokes in now and then to a gesture group I go to in Camarillo and he always draws a crowd at each break. He also takes the whole session as a composition, his final sheet flows from one sketch to the next with an occasional portrait in the middle.
