Profound statement about getting complete answers to questions you have. I get tired of instructors who want you to 'discover for yourself'. "If I wanted to discover things for myself, I'd be at home discovering things for myself, not in this class."---------------------------Great car

Woohoo, you did it!!! ✨ Congrats on getting through it! I'm still stuck on my ellipse exercises. I have actually decided to take a break from it and get back into it after returning from a two week trip. I've been constructing quite a number of 1 point perspective drawings though, so it's not all laziness and excuses 😂

Just watched your entire series here, very inspirational. I have, for some reason , decided to start drawing and have been learning basics via Proko and Bridgman and was considering the Watts Atelier which is how I found your channel. You're awesome for sharing this journey, thank you. Keep it up, I subscribed and look forward to your continuing.

Long ass comment, sorry: The great thing about Proko is that he's constantly improving so when you get to the premium anatomy course he not only provides how own answers for every single lesson but he does these hour long critique videos where he critiques student drawings and that was so helpful for me. I feel like watching him critique somebody else's mistakes and successes helps with seeing the universality of the principles he's trying to impart? Like you learn to see past style and see the principles and more importantly what a good student, not professional, assignment looks like and what a bad one looks like. Like his drawings are just incredibly good and there's no way I can be at his level yet so it's nice to see him praise someone closer to my level, who does a drawing that isn't good enough to be a professional work, for understanding the principles or anatomy or whatever. I also like that in that longer drawing you're working up to he actually teaches basic measuring techniques unlike Watts. I mean yeah you gotta learn to guess but as a student working at home it's important to know how to achieve accuracy so you know if your guesses are right. But, just in case this helps, since you wanted a critique or something to measure your assignments against, I think you need to practice gesture drawing as simply as possible (and without overly relying on the Watts rhythms). A KZbin channel, Croquis Cafe, does videos with live models, usually for a series of 1,2 and 5 minute poses but sometimes shorter. Gesture is just something you're going to have to practice every day until it becomes intuitive (not that you're doing bad it just seems stiff) so I don't have any more specific critiques but if you keep doing it and focus on movement you'll get better and then you can do the exaggerated mannequinization and final drawings on top of that and it'll look much better. Gesture (and mannequinization), however, will also become astronomically easier as you learn anatomy and at this point I would recommend just speeding through that as soon as possible. In order to understand the anatomy of the arm, for example, you have to know how everything works together so at this point I would really just watch his longer drawing video to pick up his measuring techniques (you may not be able to do his actual lesson as it requires using charcoal powder which is seriously messy but those measuring techniques saved my ass) and then SPEED through anatomy once really fast and then go back and do it again, this time taking your time with it. He hasn't finished legs yet but you can learn how to learn anatomy by going through what he has up twice and then finding a different resource for legs. Not to mention his anatomy course is really good at teaching figure drawing since he revisits all of these principles and since his videos and classes get a bajillion times better you're going to have an easier time learning the things there that he's not providing enough examples of here. Also, despite my love for the man, I just want to say I seriously hate Proko's stupid Loomis proportion assignment. I get it, they want to teach the artistically pleasing method of drawing but I think it's more important early on to highlight the actual proportional differences between men and women and not idealize them and give the woman heels for no reason. You gotta understand what you're actually looking at when you draw from reference. Anyways your drawings are looking so much better. It makes me wish I stuck with drawabox instead of quitting (hopefully I'll get around to going back to that). Congrats on finishing those god awful vehicles. That's a real accomplishment (and by the looks of it a real pain in the ass too, damn).

Thanks for your thoughtful comment! Came at a perfect time, actually. I'm working on the measurement section and it is KILLING ME. I am spending forever and when I go to check them, they are not even close to accurate. I'll probably go into detail about this for my next video, but I am really not having any luck with it despite spending a really long time trying to get the measurements right. Like, just getting the height of the figure in heads seems impossible! My hand is wobbling all over the place! GAH HOW AM I STILL SO BAD AT EVERYTHING?! Yes, I think it would be really beneficial for me to spend some more time on gesture. I have the anatomy course which I was going to jump into after finishing the long drawing (or parts of it). I'm struggling a little with how to best spend my time right now-seems like there's so much to learn still and it's hard to prioritize. Also I always laugh when I see the Loomis proportions with the lady in heels. It was a simpler time...
@Lewabwee
@Lewabwee 6 жыл бұрын
Lol right after I wrote my comment I realized I hadn't done figure drawing, much less gestures, in a week and boy were my drawings today not good. I've been doing this for so long and yeah feeling I'm in that same boat as you of how am I still so terrible? The measurement section took me like a week but having a resource that taught me accurate, not idealistic and weirdly misogynistic proportions of heels, helped a lot. It's a HUGE commitment but there's a book you've probably at least seen drawings from called "The Complete Guide to Anatomy for Artists and Illustrators" by Gottfried Bammes, that was somewhat recently translated into English, and it's thus far the first and only anatomy textbook for artists I've seen and I do mean that it's an academic textbook filled with academic writing (not that it's lacking in the drawings and department because it certainly isn't -- it has some BEAUTIFUL anatomy drawings). The chapter "The Proportions of the Human Body" is 60 pages long (and the whole book is 485 pages). People who are critical of the book seem to not be familiar with academic writing and therefore think it's too verbose but really it's just super specific because that's how academia works. It's the most accurate resource on drawing I've found (and the dude is super critical of Loomis and English anatomy instructors, just downright cruel) and while it can be difficult to parse some of the anatomy sections because of it's academic rigor for the exact same reason I feel like it's an invaluable and immensely helpful resource. Knowing the proportions in that kind of detail really helps with accurate guesswork and measuring (but of course you'll still have to learn anatomy in order to perfect that like everything with figure drawing BECAUSE IT CAN'T EVER JUST BE EASY).

Congrats on passing 👏🍰 for your success Figured I might pitch a theory on how to approach the funky exaggeration to pinpoint what it is that looks odd to you From the examples you showed I think it might be that there's lack of understanding in how muscles flex and extend (degree and direction) and having a feel for how weight is balanced. Might be you could attempt the exaggerated poses yourself, preferably in front of a mirror. You'll be able to feel when you're in an unnatural position and get a good idea of which parts bend which way , how far and how other (opposing) muscles shift to compensate. Good luck and thanks for sharing 🙂

Congratulations on the cars!! 🚗 🚗 🚗 exaggeration is a difficult concept with no right answers sadly. There are only those, which are pleasing to the eye and viewer , which are multiple for a given pose. It is what will ultimately make your drawings look alive and "on the next level" thing.

Hey Becca, I've seen your journey, all your video blogs are amazing as a guide and tell us beginners a lot about drawing as an art. I realised that you stopped the Watts Atelier course, and in some DAB video of yours, i read that you found it lacking some needed amount of anatomy and the figure sketching was a bit weak. So What I wanna ask you here is, what do you think is the best path for a beginner, among Watts Atelier, Proko and DAB, or any others you used that I'm missing? I know that Proko's content is robust but he usually teaches advanced stuff, so not him ig? Anyways, please do let me know what do you think about this. Love your videos, keep em coming! Thanks!!

Hi, awesome Becca! Could I ask you, please, if you think it's feasible to do Proko concurrently with Drawabox and the 50% "drawing for fun"? I want to draw figures, and Drawabox is taking a lot longer than I expected, so it seems counterproductive to take so long off figure drawing and anatomy, but I'm overwhelmed at how to do it all. I'm not really advancing even in the Drawabox techniques and can't progress through the course skillfully and confidently like you even though I work on it consistently and have dedicated myself to it. You're kind of like a superhero to me, how you completed the course so quickly and adroitly. And what I've seen of your own art is so beautiful and outstanding!

Definitely worthwhile to get feedback on your work! The DAB critiques were super helpful for me. I just glanced at the website and it looks like the pricing structure is different now, but I'd say a critique every week or 2 will help you enormously. It's really hard to see your own weaknesses, so it's absolutely worth every penny to get feedback.

I found the last one under $100 on eBay and snagged it. I bought a $10 mini skull from Amazon trying to be cheap and thought that I could get away with it, but it's disproportionate and did not have the right planes and shapes in the right places. And all the more expensive full-sized ones on Amazon looked a bit off. Thanks for the recommendation! I'm glad that you went through the trial and error process so that we all don't have to. :)

Proko and Watts both have tiers that give you critiques on your assignments, it's redundant to study Proko since he learned how to draw at Watts. Eric and Jeff trained him, so just study from Watts. Also, Watts has a online masterclass that teaches,figure drawing,perspective,composition,drapery and generes of illustration. Gnomon and NMA has excellent tutorials on perspective and vehicle design.
