I'm heading into 2023 after a year of attempting to self-teach myself drawing. I've taken about 6 different online classes from different instructors and it's obvious that I am in need of focusing on the fundamentals. I am hoping that by the end of 2023 I will have developed my fundamentals enough to help me progress with my drawing. :D

At a girl sister, doing the same. I can mimic other drawings well but have a hard time teaching myself to draw anything of my own. This is my 3rd attempt though at draw box but I have officially completed the first lesson. With out grinding g

Still struggling! Now focusing on learning anatomy. I can tell that there is improvement in the fundamentals for sure, but I still have a long way to go. No worries, hoping to see some huge improvement for myself in about 5 years for a personal goal.@@inifinite4666

At the start of lesson one, I struggled with the ghosting method as it was new to me. I didn't struggle with elipses as much but now I'm at the end of lesson 1 I'm definitely better at both skills. I really appreaciate you and the rest of the drawabox team for doing this for everyone to access for free on youtube as it really improves mine and other's drawing skills. Thanks!

At lesson 1. i didn't have any problem with drawing straight lines after day one. and ghosted planes are my favourite exercise at the moment. but the women i started drawing elipses on those ghosted plane. my confidence level went down. because my elipses sucks. so instaed for filling 2 pages. i started filling 2 pages per day. and since 5th page. i started getting improved on my elipses

I had a lot of trouble lining up the curves with the minor axis. I think the object I was using to trace the curves just kind of sucked as a straight edge, so I'll use a better object next time, but in cases like that, is it more important to make sure the circles align with the minor axis, or with the curves of the funnel?
@Uncomfortable
@Uncomfortable 2 жыл бұрын
The minor axis is always the more important part, as this exercise primarily focuses on helping students develop their ability to align their ellipses to some predefined minor axis line.

Do you think it’s worth moving to these more advanced ellipses exercises even if we did not even master making a proper ellipse shape yet? I have no problem drawing ellipses with my wrist, but i did my best to follow your guidelines and only draw with my shoulder. When doing that, I can’t even make something that looks at least slightly like an oval or round shape, let alone align it to the minor axis. Should I still move to these exercises or keep trying to improve my ellipses a bit (no grinding though). Planing on going the official critique route, I will probably find the answer there?) anyway, I love the course so far! As a beginner, I find it challenging, but also fun! You’re a great teacher! Greetings from Romania

As discussed in Lesson 0, you should only be completing the quantity of work that is assigned. It's not about whether you're doing it right or not - it's about completing the work to the best of your current ability, so as to create a body of work that represents what you do understand, and what you might not fully grasp, so that someone else can assess that information and give you recommended next steps on that basis. Continuing to work at the same exercise until you're satisfied is what we classify as "grinding", and should be avoided. If you don't remember the parts of Lesson 0 that address this, I strongly recommend that you go back over it.

So with this exercise, I can see where I'm off in terms of one side of a cylinder being longer than another. I however have some trouble sometimes determing what the correct major axis accross the middle SHOULD look like. In order to check myself at the end of each exercise I will measure the cylinder lengthwise and see where the dividing line should be. My major problem is what angle the major axis should be. Would it make sense to measure out a corrective cross across each cylinder with a ruler to see what it should look like? My cylinder lines probably need to be placed more carefully to help with this Thank you for any help

Honestly, I have only seen students run into issues and confusion when they try and make use of the major axis in any way. I would not recommend trying to use it at all, and instead focus entirely on the minor axis line instead.

@@Uncomfortable I understand. I will maybe still use ruler correction technique, but only to help determine the correct minor axis afterwards. Thanks!

This video is not appearing in my subscription feed for some reason?
@Uncomfortable
@Uncomfortable 2 жыл бұрын
As the video isn't anything of note (just an update on a minor exercise), I didn't want to draw too much attention to it, since I was planning on releasing more significant videos the next day (the new Lesson 0 ones). Sometimes people react negatively to getting hit with a bunch of videos from one channel at once, so I purposely hid this one and the other funnels video from the subscription feed, as people using it as part of the course would come across it when looking at the actual exercise notes here: drawabox.com/lesson/1/funnels

should i redraw my guidelines if my minor axis isn't symmetrically between my arcs?
@Uncomfortable
@Uncomfortable 2 жыл бұрын
I find that when my minor axis is not entirely centered, it still helps me get a better sense of where that minor axis line *should* have been, and thus how my ellipses should be aligned. So, while it's not perfectly placed, it can still provide an adequate reference - so that's not a big deal, and you don't really have to worry about redrawing them. That said, since we can draw these initial marks with tools, be sure to take plenty of time in laying them out so that these situations are avoided in the first place. They'll still happen on occasion, but generally the focus should be on minimizing it as much as you can.

Are we supposed to have our drawing hand resting on the page?? I'm still drawing with my shoulder either way but I'm finding that with my pinky knuckle resting on the page for stability, it actually catches in the wet ink the second time around the ellipse and screws up the second pass, OR the change from the paper to the drawing surface throws me off, but if I try to have my hand completely floating both while ghosting and actually drawing, it's also not effective....
