It is amazing how close to the profile of the body and neck, taking care to keep proportion to the overall appearance of photos. You told your not replicating a violin but have you consider the wood, the age of it and the lines of winter and summer wood of the original?

That is certainly one aspect used to recreate these instruments, and I talk about it in other videos. I have had the opportunity to hear several fantastic violins. While this may be controversial, I don't put any stock in the tone of an instrument being any better or worse, for that matter, with age. It just so happens that good-sounding instruments survive because they sound good and become favored instruments. I think that the great makers of today, and to be clear, I am not one of them, are making as good if not better instruments than the old masters and using modern tone-wood to do it.

Thanks for the video! I've always wanted to know more about the proportional design of the violin. Kevin Kelly has a really good video on the four circle approach to violin making but unfortunately he has removed anything about the easier scroll method you mention. I'm going to try to follow yours for a double bass scroll. Do you have a video showing the standard method?

The method im using in this video is pretty close to Kevin Kelly's video, I have tried to adapt his technique to fusion 360 as best as possible. I have emailed him a few times, he was planning to write a book on the topic.

the video is bit fast for me to follow....but I’ll keep trying! I overlaid a bunch of scroll templates in Fusion, amazing how different all they are! I tired to average them all out to come-up with a design. I like the idea starting with of an ‘averaged’ one, so long as I can make it geometrically ‘correct’, and then playing around with it to my eyes liking...I’m not a big fan of trying to make exact copies of other instruments. Anyhow, thanks for the video, I’ll see if I can get a handle on it !

What software are you using?

I use Fusion360, or it uses me, either way, its great, CAD and CAM in the same program, who would have thought.
