@joel thanks so much! Idk how I found you but I'm doing my largest portrait on stretched canvas with graphite/charcoal/lead. You have given me hope that I can actually pull this off. I'm going to use your technique and give it a whirl! Thank you! Your work is beautiful!

I really love and relate to your art and style. It's really amazingly beautiful and watching your channel is really helping me out with taking my charcoal pieces to a better level . I thank you mucho for that as well. And if I didn't like the channel already I came across the large mouth bass pieces!!! Art and fishing is my 2 fav things in the world. Keep the information and vids coming. Thanks again for everything

This is stunning! What is the large crayon-looking item that you are using to darken the wolf's nose and eye edges?
@JoelPilcherArt2 жыл бұрын
It's either vine charcoal or a blending stump dipped in charcoal powder. I use both to darken shadows. Thank you!!

ive watched a couple of your videos now and i wonder if you could explain why you work on canvas as opposed to paper. is it because you like that texture to show through? i would think the "give" the canvas have would be harder to work with than a flat piece of strathmore paper on board.
@JoelPilcherArt Жыл бұрын
It definitely took some getting used to. The main reason for developing the process for charcoal on canvas was that I desired a higher quality and more durable finished product. Canvas is much more substantial than paper and I love that my original work can be framed without glass like a painting. I've also come to love the textures I get.

You do some really awesome art work! Is the canvas you use primed?
@JoelPilcherArt Жыл бұрын
Thanks! I buy my canvases stretched and pre primed. I don't do any additional prep to them.

Where do you get your reference photos? I enjoy doing wildlife art but tracking down and getting permission from the photographer is very difficult I've learned.
@JoelPilcherArt11 ай бұрын
I either work directly with photographers to get permission or I purchase rights through online resources. Wildlifereferencephotos.com is a very affordable option. Thanks!

What products do you use for your charcoal base? And do you have any favorite products?
@JoelPilcherArt2 жыл бұрын
I use charcoal powder for the base. Coate's or General's have both been great. Marie's vine charcoal for the rest of the drawing.

Hey Brother.... its very cool... you are a genius at art... you have done a great job... your Drawing looks pretty well. Really superb and amazing 👏 👌 😍 👍 🙌.... I have Big Question is that After Finished your drawing "HOW DO YOU SAFE IT WHILE SHOW IT FOR SOME AUDIENCE ?..." what i mean is if someone mesmerized at your work can touch it without any second thought and may damage your work by blending it with thier hands... how do you avoid that!?.. Do you apply any type of oil coating over it after you finish your work to make it like Laminated!?.. I hope you understand my question!.. please clarify my doubt!...
@JoelPilcherArt2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I clear coat and varnish the artwork once it's finished. Check out my video where I provide more insight on the process.

What kind of canvas do you use and do you add more gesso?

Thanks I will check them out. I have been using Fredrix Blue Label canvases but they are not smooth enough for detail with charcoal. @@JoelPilcherArt

What does the acetone do?
@JoelPilcherArt Жыл бұрын
It just creates an effect that I like and helps seal the charcoal to the canvas.
