I'd like to suggest some other things that have helped me. When you get to the zoo, stick with ONE animal for a long time. Too many times I see artists jump from animal to animal and when you do this, you will learn NOTHING about a deeper understanding of a particular animal's anatomy, how it flows, it's behavior, etc. Because they are locked in small enclosures, animals will often rest in the same pose time and again. You can actually start several poses and keep coming back to signature and repeated poses (and finish the sketch) on one page. And if you are really poised to impress, pick an animal the NIGHT BEFORE and do some practice sketches; rehearse, if you will, so when you get to the zoo, you will have a more innate idea of basic proportion and shape of your chosen animal and then ad the behaviors you observe at the zoo. Too often we overwhelmed by so many details when drawing from life and if you address these simple things, confidence with proportion and shape the night before, you can tackle other things which you were not able to sense from videos or photos online. Make the most of your time~;)

Drawing animals from life Observe first . . take a mental picture . , know your basic anatomy . . watch the proportions. . . look for the big shapes first . . break the body up into sections . . stay loose . . Find the flaw / rhythm through the body . . know your locomotion . . use overlapping shapes to keep the drawing from flattening out . . watch your perspective . . try to get clear silhouettes . . look for personality and emotion . . be tasteful when drawing hair and fur . . color washes do a lot of the work for you . . look for places to play simplicity against complexity . . working on a mid tone with black and white can give you an edge . . now go draw some critters

Thanks for this topic! I have a lovebird and cats at home, and live next to a dairy farm so if the cows roam near my house I'll try to sketch them, but it can be difficult to draw them because, as you said, they move around. (Same with random people outside; I try to draw them quickly but it can be tough since they're moving.)

I have tried drawing from life a few times, and find it doesn't give me much, especially on animals Im not used to draw. I do know basic anatomy. The step up is too big so I try a few lines but can't get the shapes right. BUT when I draw animals Im familiar with, like horses or deer, I can focus on the gesture and proportions and light. Then the life studies give me much more that I don't get from photos. So yesterday I took a few photos and made a collage.. I'm thinking Ill practice some figure sketching from the photos and get to know the proportion and anatomy of the specific species better by heart and hand. And then go back to practice life drawing and pick up the parts I can't get from photos. :) I like watching the animals too.

Maybe I haven't found it in your library yet, but I would love to hear some more of your thoughts or even a video explaining how to manipulate the perspective of an animal subject based on a reference photo. For example, say in the reference photo, the animal is looking straight at you. What are some techniques that you use to manipulate that animal if you want to move it so that it's looking slightly down and about 30º to the side?

Thank you for this video! When you first began life drawing animals, how much of your page were filled with false starts because the critter completely changed its pose? I've been drawing mostly thumbnails, but any time I try to draw a sketch of a normal size, my subjects move! It's frustrating. My background is illustration and I went through an education that stressed reference photos. I don't know if my frustration is stemming from the desire to get my subjects to look good and my inability to exaggerate the form and use 3D visualization to figure out what I'm missing. Advice would be appreciated!

Hi Aaron, I was wondering what operating system you use with your Cintiq. I have a Cintiq 27 QHD and every time I turn it on I have to restart the Cintiq driver. After contacting customer support several times they basically gave up and said they can't do anything about it. I'm running Windows 7 so I wondering if maybe Windows 8 or 10 would work with it.

I too use a 27QHD. I use the latest operating system for Mac. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

I'm on a 27 QHD with Win 8.1. I haven't had any software issues. I did have to RMA my unit and Wacom replaced the screen.
