Line and Color Quick Start Guide: www.thedrawingcodex.com/quick...
In this video we are doing a simple drawing lesson focusing on how to draw backgrounds... more specifically how to draw forest scenes as backgrounds.
These concepts are the same ones I teach and use for every type of background. It's all about understanding your set pieces and trying to apply basic composition to support your story!
Remember that 'Story' is really just what you want to tell... There are visual stories in landscape paintings where all we see is an environment. It's a matter of leading the eye and keeping the viewer looking where you want.

Thanks for these videos. The Loomis videos about moving the proportion lines, widths, length etc pretty much solved my "same face syndrome" instantly. I don't know why. Once you know it, it seems like such a simple thing, but before that I couldn't figure it out and was really stuck. I've been having a lot of fun creating characters, goblins, works, monsters etc by doing it. I've not really found anyone else teaching drawing this way :). Deserve a million subs :)

this is absolutely genius. as a "left brained" person, i often struggle with drawing things without just defaulting to what i *think* they look like, so the idea of "defining set pieces" before hand is really smart.

You have taken a complex subject, and managed to make it simple and approachable. I think you really nailed it with this video. Bravo, I can't ask for more than that. As an additional note, I just can't get engaged in videos where the maker sits and talks at the screen. But I'm immediately interested and engaged as soon as you sit down and start drawing out your concepts. So thanks, I appreciate your work here.

The way I normally handle this is to focus on the main objects first and then treat those smaller in-between areas as an abstract composition... the goal is just to fill up the space and create good overlaps. think of some simple items you can draw back there. Focus on your primary read!

I have a question for you. I know there's a difference between a comic and a graphic novel, but does some of these fundamentals (example this video) apply to a graphic novel? Or should I be looking more into information that just pertains to graphic novels and not comics?
@TheDrawingCodex
@TheDrawingCodex Жыл бұрын
That’s a good question! The term graphic novel, is best viewed as a marketing term. There really isn’t any huge difference between what you do day to day as a comic book artist or a graphic novel artist. It’s more a matter of getting a purchaser/consumer to understand what they’re actually going to get. It has its basis in the western market where the term “comic book“ is viewed as being simplistic and linked to superheroes. They needed a term “graphic novel“ to communicate to people that this was more like a novel for mature readers potentially. Not just people punching each other in the face dressed in capes :-)

I am a professional animator and storyboard artist, i.e. I just closed my first big job. I used the intuos pro for so long but I want to change to a pen display, do you think the wacom cintiq 22 is a good choice? will 1080p resolution be a problem for me? is 4k necessary?
@TheDrawingCodex
@TheDrawingCodex Жыл бұрын
I know a professional story border who works on Netflix shows etc who uses a Wacom Cintiq 22 with the 1080p screen. I think it should be fine? 4K and the higher colour gamut are more useful when you’re doing large illustrations. Storyboarding tends to be line with black-and-white. I don’t think you’ll notice a huge difference to be honest!
