The fact that you draw most of these portraits in under 30 minutes amazes me. Thank you for inspiring me to go back to drawing after a long break.

it's amazing that you you were able to draw everything with such a dull blunt pencil is amazing. You did it with such a loose style, yet you captured all the form, shadow and details to resemble the "The Rock". You've inspired me to experiment drawing with a looser style.

Wei - I kid you not, YOU were the very first artist I watched who inspired me to draw portraits. Before you, I never even considered it. Now I have been doing portraits for a few years now, and moved onto using charcoal......but you taught me everything I needed to know to get me started! Now I have my own KZbin channel which I dedicate to helping others learn, just like you do! So THANK YOU for the inspiration and I'm so glad to see you back online with your channel! Your friend in art, - Jeff Mash
@ArtofWeiHo5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jeff. Just checked out your channel. That's pretty good with charcoal. I've never tried charcoal because it's so messy and it seems like it needs a more specific workflow than pencil. But that's what the masters use so it must be hard=). Keep it up, you're gonna be great at it!
@WatchJeffArt5 жыл бұрын
@@ArtofWeiHo - I stayed away from charcoal for the same reasons. And you're right, it IS more messy than graphite, but not as much as you'd expect. For example, if you wanted, you could use regular charcoal pencils, meaning you don't have to hold big chunks of messy charcoal in your hand, but rather pencils which feel the exact same as a graphite pencil. What I found (and what convinced me to use charcoal over graphite) is that 1) you can get really dark values quite easily, but more importantly, 2) there is no REFLECTION of light on a charcoal drawing. What I mean by that is if you draw in graphite, you will notice a "shine" or a reflection of light when you look at it a certain way. With charcoal, it absorbs the light and you get rich, dark tones with no reflection. This allows for some pretty amazing portraits. Again, I never knew that you could get charcoal in pencil form, and they come in different hardness/softness values the same way that you're used to using. (I use a 2B, 4B, and 6B in charcoal). I appreciate your comment, Wei. And like I said, you were the MAIN inspiration for me. Before watching you, I never drew a portrait before. Keep up the good work and thank you for subscribing to me. Now I am motivated to get back into drawing knowing that you're watching! :) = Jeff

I like how in the beginning it doesn't really look like him too much but once the shading starts it all comes together, this is very helpful.

Amazing how shading can really bring a drawing to life! I now draw with charcoal pencils because you can really get some great dark shades with it.

I don't think you'll answer but I want to ask anyway. So I'm going to draw this for my sister and will watch this video but I what pencils do I need to buy for this? Is it HB and something? Your answer will be much appreciated

HB or anything else is fine. The higher the HB number, the darker you can get with it.

Is it better to draw with or without measuring with pencil
@WatchJeffArt5 жыл бұрын
It's all up to you. Personally, I think you should use your EYES and brain to tell you if your proportions are correct, and then use your pencil to double check those findings. Even Wei does this in his drawings (using his intuition and brain to know if something looks proportionate or not). It's what I try and teach on the tutorials on my own channel. But using your pencil as a unit of measurement is perfectly fine and definitely recommended.
