Big messy sketchbook tour video! 150 pages of drawing fundamentals using a ballpoint pen. I LOVE a good sketchbook tour video here on KZbin, so I decided I would try and make another myself, although this one isn't a sketch book full of beautiful, nicely rendered finished illustrations - far from it. This sketchbook is my 'messy' or 'rough' sketchbook, where I work on drawing fundamentals, warm ups, anatomy studies and whatever else I fancy drawing whenever inspiration hits.
The main focus / content of this sketchbook is perspective & boxes, gesture drawing, anatomy studies, skulls, heads & faces, mannequins and simplification of forms and shapes. Basically the things that all artists should have a good understanding of.
Most of the anatomy studies in this book are studies from the Proko anatomy course, where I would watch Stan's videos, and make notes on everything, as well as draw the examples, as well as the assignments. they aren't the neatest studies to be showing in a video like this, but the idea behind this was more about learning and reinforcing the information as opposed to spending time creating beautiful illustrations. A lot of the other fundamentals I work on are things like warming up by turning and rotating boxes in perspective, Andrew loomis head proportions and construction, as well as just trying to simplify all forms.
As mentioned in the video I tend to have a habit of being a little too pristine when it comes to drawing, and finding myself coming up with a lot of excuses and never finding myself drawing '10 minutes isn't enough for me to do anything worthwhile, I will wait until I have more free time'. So the idea here was to purchase some cheap materials ( a big cheap sketchbook along with any ballpoint pens I had laying around ), and leave this sketchbook open next to me on my desk, so that whenever inspiration strikes, or whenever I want to draw something, no matter how simple, I have no excuse to avoid it - for me I really had to work hard at making myself draw something that isn't too 'neat and tidy' but you can see a lot of the work here is far from it, it's rough, but I find it helpful for learning.
I have a few other videos linked below related to this video that you might like, I would also love to hear your thoughts on this type of video and whether you want to see more. My main hope is that this video can act as inspiration and motivation for other artists, in the same way that other sketchbook tour videos on KZbin inspire me.

Wow you should see my sketchbooks. They're doodle pads for the most part but I'd follow a particular theme until it seems right but I fill my pages so there might be some similar drawings on one page like yours but I fill the page with other stuff that's takes my fancy. As reference it's good because of the randomness I'll have so much variety that I can get fresh ideas just going through old stuff. Variety is relative as I'll draw fantasy/sci-fi warriors, wizards, ninjas, male and female, also partial to spaceship design. I couldn't draw the basics over and over again and quite frankly I'd rather have a destination to go towards like an entire figure instead of just doing a head or torso at a particular angle, you're never going to use that in a final picture. Still drawing every day is definitely beneficial in building technique and keeping you the zone.

Thanks for watching! Yeah I really like the way you are doing your sketchbooks, and the content sounds awesome, I would love to see your stuff! I think I should probably work like that too to be honest. Although I guess ultimately the main thing is to make sure we are drawing and improving and not worrying too much about whether it will mess up the sketchbook or match the theme etc. Thanks again!

I love watching sketchbook tour videos here on KZbin too, and this was no exception! It's not very often I actually see a sketchbook tour showing fundamentals, as you mentioned, it's usually fully rendered illustrations that probably aren't really 'sketches' at all haha. I think this was really well done though, I can see you are putting in the mileage and it's pretty clear you have a pretty good understanding of perspective, anatomy and other fundamentals. Keep up the awesome work and I can't wait to see part 2. More sketchbook tour videos please!!

Thanks Speedtutor, I will definitely be working on more sketchbook tour videos for the future - definitely takes me a while though, even just with messy / faster sketches like this, I will use it as motivation to draw even more though! Thanks for watching

I’ve been watching your book reviews for a long time now and I always wondered what your art was like, this is the first time the algorithm took me to some of your work and I’m way impressed, I love seeing this type of sketchbook tour, thanks for sharing it, I know it’s been awhile now but thanks for sharing, definitely feeling inspired and motivated!

Oh wow thanks for such a wonderful comment! I always feel really inspired when watching sketchbook tours, so I am really happy my video could do the same for some one else too! Initially when I started the channel it was mainly tutorials and drawing videos, so I always intended to get a lot more sketchbook tour videos done ( and I am working towards it ) but as I got so busy with work & life, I gradually started recording some quick art book preview videos, instead of uploading nothing, and before I knew it I had uploaded nothing but book videos for years and now have like 150-200 of them lol! Anyway, thanks again, really appreciate your comment!

Hi i just watched the video all the way through and it was absolutely worth it, your figures are still really great and im sure you'll be able to do them from imagination soon, its really important to desromanticize the sketchbook as this place where your prettiest drawings are gonna be, they're pretty much our training wheels or study logs and they can and should look rubbish especially at the start, and while real pretty sketchbook are always gonna be more popular because people just like looking at pretty art, i think that being real and showing all the real practice that comes with becoming a good draftsman makes us all aspiring artists so much more aware of the steps it takes and reminds us to "trust the process" rather than expect perfection at every step, here's to more sketchbook tours of all skill levels!

Thanks so much for the wonderful comment. I couldn't agree more! I definitely have a real struggle to de-romanticize the sketchbook as you mentioned! I have to fight the urge to not render beautiful illustrations and spend days on them, because I usually find I didn't learn anything in the process . Again, exactly like you said, my hope is that these kind of studies of fundamentals ( despite not being overly exciting ) will help me get to a stage where I can draw better from imagination too, so hopefully it will pay off! Thanks again for watching

Thanks so much! Haha yeah I used to prefer pencil / graphite, I'm not sure how I have started swaying towards ballpoint so much, because it's really not very forgiving! Although I guess that's also the benefit in some ways. I do like the contrast for camera though, pencil sketches don't show up so well sometimes. Thanks again for watching! :)

i'm completly dumb in drawing since i was young so now i really want to learn draw because of my work , i see like you had already read a tone and tone of books about drawing , so i want your advise please , what is or what are the books you recommand me to read , to start really from zero , something like to start with basics shapes square circle... still come out with a real draw , my futur work is motion designer and in my case i need to learn drawing, and the main thing to learn is character design that i will be able to animate after

Hey, thanks for your comment. It's definitely a big question to answer. But the Andrew loomis book 'fun with a pencil' might be a good start ( although it is quite old now admitedly). I also think something that is quite 'fun' and generalised for information might be good like the Brett Bean DRAW book (link here - kzbin.info/www/bejne/gJq8iIuLn9eiY7s ) that one will probably give you a basic understanding of most subjects in art, but without going too deep of focusing on one area in perticular. If you are hoping to be a character artist / designer, anatomy and gesture books might also be a good one for you, there's an awful lot out there to choose from. Again Andrew loomis 'figure drawing for all it's worth' is a good one and has all the info you really need, but I did find it a tough read personally. Morpho books might be an inexpensive way to start and see if you like the teaching style of the book - kzbin.info/www/bejne/bWKkaGhsnK57ZpY Also I found Tom Fox Draws book really good not only for anatomy but also for getting an understanding of shapes in space, probably the most important fundamental. here is a link, let me know what you think to them - kzbin.info/www/bejne/p4CTk32Pa95-oqs

@@tucoerquilenne6765 Very true! I love to have a record of stuff like this. It's one of the reasons I end up using sketchbooks compared to digital ( I'm more of a digital artist than traditional, but I like the satisfaction of seeing a filled sketchbook haha)

Keep in mind if you keep drawing to impress others you’ll never be happy. Instead learn the ability to draw for yourself.. you’ll be happier and realize you will improve much more and develop a solid style! Everything else will come later..The self validation bs. And sketchbooks are meant for experimentation, ideas and learning. Don’t ever, restrain yourself. For the love of god, listen.. Ive done all of the above.. and learned from those decades.. Great Anatomy sketches! Don’t knock it, you learn from every line! Try to incorporate everything you learn into a drawing!

Great advice, I couldn't agree more! Also Thank you for the kind words too. I guess the biggest issue I struggle with when it comes to 'drawing for myself and not others' is wanting to make a career from my art in the future, so the need for wanting to build a following on socials is there, to make it more of a viable option, if that makes sense? Not that you NEED to have the social following, but it could certainly help. I guess I need to find a balance though, as we all know that socials can be pretty distracting especially if you have a tendoncy to procrastinate (which unfortunately I do! haha). Thanks again for watching!

Excellent sketchbook tour! Really impressive that you did everything in here with a ballpoint pen!? I didn't even know what was a thing. The hard work is really paying off . I know you said you have a long way to go but I think you already have a pretty good understanding of structure and fundamentals. A lot of people skip past the basic skills before mastering them, so like you said in the video, these initial sketches should pay off in the long run especially if you're trying to draw from imagination eventually. Also I like that you mentioned the Proko anatomy course, the notes look really useful, I have been thinking of taking the course myself. Would love to see a Proko anatomy course review in the future or any other drawing courses you would recommend. Have you tried the Proko fundamentals course too?
@SketchedbySte
@SketchedbySte 3 ай бұрын
Thanks Natasha. Yeah i'm a bit surprised that I have started using a ballpoint pen so much myself too haha! I am more of a pencil / graphite sketch kinda guy usually when it comes to traditional art and filling sketchbooks, but I do like the contrast with ballpoint pen, plus it shows on camera much better too. I would love to do a Proko anatomy course review, that's a great idea, although I still have a long way to go through it at the moment ( currently on the last half of the course, legs anatomy ). I have the fundamentals course too yes, but I haven't really started it yet. The proko courses are probably the best I have come across - but they're very long and require an awful lot of commitment in my opinion! Thanks again for watching
