Great topic! Nicely done video as well. I've been looking at the way Bouguereau painted hands (and feet) as well, more of an academic style compared to Sargent of course, but still, in most of his paintings, the hands are quite gestural and expressive. In a similar way to these first mentioned by Sargent, see "Yvonne sur le pas de la porte" and "The Shepherdess" (there are a few paintings with this same name, but you'll see the one with the same hand gesture that I mean). And then so many others with beautiful hands in all kinds of positions. Then there's Frans Hals, so many of his also have wonderful expressive hands, like "Paulus van Beresteyn, 1629" and "Portrait of a Woman Standing" but then he was also amazing at capturing expressive faces as well, which is astounding compared to everyone else in his time period. I'm excited to see some more of his paintings towards the end of this year when there will be an exhibit of Dutch paintings coming to Fort Worth in TX. I absolutely love everything about Sargents work and can see and listen to anything related to his work all day, I also love that book by Ratcliff, and I just got the "Fashioned by Sargent" book about the exhibit in Boston, currently ongoing I think. We were planning a trip to go see the exhibit and then I had to have surgery right before Christmas and I'm still recovering so we couldn't go anymore, the book is wonderful!

Thank you once again for the amazing comments! I want to make videos on Bouguereau in the future. I had the privilege of seeing where one of his studios was located in Paris, right next to Sargent’s, as well as visiting Academie Julian. Frans Hals is a blind spot for me, need to dive deeper. I have 2 other Sargent catalogues from exhibitions that I need to read before buying a new one 🤣 Hope you have a speed recovery!

@@sketch-habit Thanks! That's amazing, I've only seen one Bouguereau in person (if I remember correctly) and would so love to see more examples. I believe Sargent studied and copied Frans Hals paintings. When I saw a Hals painting for the first time I could definitely see how his work would have influenced Sargent, especially brushwork. I'm trying to focus on more master studies this year with my own practice, and trying not to be afraid of ones that I would think are too difficult or impossible to copy. I paint with gouache and watercolor so it is a challenge, but it's been fun.

Yeah, it's a fun challenge :) I'd suggest going to the Clark Institute of Art if you can, or I believe the Getty in LA has some great Bouguereaus as well. I really need to go to the US. My plan is to go from Washington to Boston visiting museums and studios, like Howard Pyle's. The problem is time and money to do that haha
