Definitely had to hit the sub button! Just amazing! The one and only thing that i need to master is drawing these very simple shapes in perspective.

here are these various concepts of gesture , mannequinization, landmark and anatomy ... gesture seems fundamental to make drawing more dynamic... and not stiff..and key is to carry it through as drawing evolves... likes of Michael Hampton jump deep into anatomy .. some move from gesture to mannequin but then don't explain how the mannequin connects back to life drawing.. mannequin seems like a tool to draw from imagination... then you have life drawing... based on gesture and landmarks.. where the comparative focuses on relative position of landmarks... then shadow shapes and tone to build volume by turning form... how these concepts can be interwoven to make figure more lively and dynamic isn't always clear.. am I shifting from gesture to observation..am I using mannequin to understand form ..etc... this video tried to connect some of it.. and it seems boxes etc orients the eye to see plane changes and to train eye the boxes help sort of make it real... thank you so much.

Thanks for the tutorial, Carolin; I will begin doing this as a daily exercise. I do have a question for you in regards to placement of facial features. What I do is I will find a portrait and, in my head, will mentally draw vertical and horizontal lines from the edges of lips, nose, eyes, etc to see how the others are placed relative to them. However, when I go to check my accuracy, I will draw the lines over the actual portrait and discover that I am either way off in terms of the degree of angle, or just enough to fumble the entire drawing. This is something that I am really trying to fix. What would you suggest that I do to get better at the observation of angles and the ability to faithfully recreate those angles? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the question. I know what you mean. First off, please know that what you're experiencing is totally normal. We think we're doing our best to measure, we try to be accurate and yet despite our best efforts we're off. That's just how it goes. Similar to how your aim isn't that good when you first learn to throw a ball it takes repeated practice with full focus. Think about how long and much golfers or baseball player practice to get to full accuracy. Drawing is really the same in that regard. I recommend you make your first pass of the death, then pause and place your drawing side by side with the reference. Then without beating yourself up over it notice which areas are off and go to correct them. You'll find that even after you correct it, it won't be 100% great yet either, so you'll have to keep comparing and correcting, either until you triumph or until you give up. I sometimes like placing a photo of my drawing next to the reference image on my computer to get more emotional distance from it. This allows me usually to see the mistakes more easily. But as I said, our biggest hurdle to getting better is usually our impatience with ourselves and our expectation that we should be better by now. Trust that you'll get better with practice and attention. Portrait drawing is difficult and we have to pay our dues 😉 The more you immerse yourself into the subject the easier it will get. Keep going, Let me know how it goes and happy drawing to you! 💪✏️🎉

How do you find where are the landmarks for these boxes? More specific question I have is, most common way people draw the boxes is using collar bone as a landmark for the top of the box and bottom rib as the bottom of the box. How?? Collar bone can move independently of the rib cage and bottom of the rib has no correlating landmark on the back of the human body? (bottom rib is curved). I don't understand how do boxes help with understanding the perspective of the body when all the landmarks are apparently arbitrarily chosen.
