+Jonathan Walsh : Thanks! About streaming video, yes, it is still planed. I'm curious ; when do you think it's the best range of hour(s) to stream for many timezone and what day? I would like to do a weekly group of 2 or 3h answer with mic to chat questions while working on Pepper&Carrot page. I think this way I can record and get work done at same time to be on schedule with the episode release.

+David Revoy I'm in Korea so my answer is probably gonna be very different from the rest of your viewers :) For me, after about 10 pm Korean time would be ideal (that's like 2~3 PM in CET I think). But that sounds way too early for a european audience.

+Jonathan Walsh :Thanks a lot for the info. I started a note txt file here and added your fav range, I'll keep asking around me, and I'll try to find the best hour range. I'll probably in the end just 'dance' from week to week in various time range to visit everyone timezone.

Hey there! I just recently found your channel through the Krita website and I really like all the videos I have seen so far! Especially the commented ones are really helpful and the visual hints you edit in make them all the more easy to understand. Your art is great, too, I will definitely check out your webcomic! Somewhere on the comments you said you are worried people won't like your accent. Don't be afraid to turn on your microphone more often! Your English is clear and your voice is very pleasant to listen to. :-) I think with a somewhat more regular upload schedule and the current quality of content you'd gain a huge viewership in no time. Keep it up, best regards!

Just watching the process alone without commentary is phenomenally inspiring and very informative to anyone who is willing to watch with a careful eye. If you have the ability, I would suggest slowing the video down to real time to explain those detailed processes you're are using. I seriously doubt that many watchers understand just how slowly and carefully you are building those lines. Great stuff. Thank you!
@DavidRevoy8 жыл бұрын
+Stephen Clark : Thank you for the feedback. True, I should probably really spend the first part in real time, even pausing with overlay to show the logic I have in mind, and the gesture I do with the stylus to anticipate the stroke. You are right: I take a lot of time on the main structure, I draw much quicker after this. Because a solid sketch or volume is easy to 'sewing' on the top less important lines. When the base volume is setup, 80% of the challenge of the drawing is done. Thanks for suggesting the good idea. I'll try to focus on developing this first part in future commented timelapses.

Excellent video. Even the small tips are very well explained and teach a lot. I was wondering how one deals with very sharp edges, where color will either bleed out if you paint it by hand or 'sip in' if you paint using G'MIC or fill tool.
@DavidRevoy8 жыл бұрын
+Crimson Sunrise : Hey, I'm familiar with your nickname from the IRC channel of Krita, thanks for passing by on KZbin. Thin/Sharp lines are always a pain to colorize. Gmic[colorize] is the most accurate method on my test ( www.davidrevoy.com/article240/gmic-line-art-colorization ) , but also it produce a really aliased effect ( on another side, it's ideal to split the are in island ). It require a little blur/aliasing to look clean. The next level for clean thin line and coloring precision can be achieved only with vector tools.

I look forward to learning more from your other videos because I am brand new to digital and just learning Krita. I find that I get distracted by all the wonderful tools and brushes. Furthermore, I would like to create Brush sets that help me focus on the job I am doing. So a brush set for sketching, one for inking and another for painting and then maybe special effects. Do you have any videos about that? I looked briefly, but find nothing. So I thought why not ask.

How do you move their body parts around? And how do you change the opacity of the sketch layer to do the line art?
@DavidRevoy6 жыл бұрын
You have an opacity slider just on the top of the "layer docker" ; To turn the sketch to blue, look at my other video about line-art (I explain the step better on it). To move the body parts, you need to first do a selection around the part you want to move, then press ctrl+T to transform ( enter when it is done to compute the result, and deselect , pick the brush again to draw)
@robbieking40706 жыл бұрын
One more question. What brushes did you sue for this drawing?
@lemoncake18118 жыл бұрын
thank you so much for this! i have a question regarding the brush docker icons... when i select a brush, the icon in the brush list doesnt highlight blue like i see in your videos.. so its as if i have not selected it ( even though i can use it and it works) how do i change a setting so it highlights?
@DavidRevoy8 жыл бұрын
+Lemon Cake : Hey! Thanks! The blue highlight is here just because I use a different theme than the default one. You can change the theme in (menu) Settings > Themes > (I use 'Krita Blender', it has blue highlight).
@lemoncake18118 жыл бұрын
+David Revoy yes! i found that out last night when i realised your setup and screen was much lighter than mine was... i had downloaded your extra themes for krita and was on the Krita-darker theme so that did not have those highlighted icons. Now i changed to just the dark theme.. ( that blue highlight means a lot to me as you can tell hahahah) had a big conversation about it in the Krita page on facebook. You should drop by! everyone there is a big fan of you =D!

Have a good time drawing and no pressure; here I'm still struggling with my line-art and I think I'll probably feel that until the end of my life. At one point, I think I accepted it was just hard; and my misconception about it was to think it would be easy if I trained enough. ^__^ But this thick&thin game, the satisfaction of getting just a little part "right" that ring well in a artwork is enough to make me want to start again.

the stabilizer makes my brush delay and even lag I think, I cant really use this program with this stabilizer, even on 50 it lags
@DavidRevoy8 жыл бұрын
+Lio Local Chibi Thief : The Stabilizer has too complex settings; and very bad default values in general. Be sure to : 1. Use a low 'Distance', on my other one tablet, I just needs something like 20, or 10 2. /!\ Uncheck 'Delay' 3. Activate Finish line 4. Active Stabilize Sensors 5. Depending the zoom size you are using ; check or uncheck the scalable Distances. With playing this way , you should find a setting that smooth your lines; the secret is to use the highest 'Distance' value while 'not feeling it at all' when you are drawing. It takes a little time. Good luck !
@user-ze7hp2jf5x8 жыл бұрын
+David Revoy the stabilizer feature is still buggy, I did as you instructed but I need to zoom in and out otherwise the lineart seems somewhat like a block, it makes it hard to make curvy lines, but thx for the tip, I will try to get use to it
@DavidRevoy8 жыл бұрын
I hope next versions of Krita will solve the buggy issue you meet. Good luck!
@user-ze7hp2jf5x8 жыл бұрын
+David Revoy I managed to fix it somehow, turns out that the highest stabilizer my pc can run is about 25 to 30 without lagging, I compared it with my other program Sai that runs on 15 and the lineart is the same. also I wanted to ask you since I didnt really find any definitive answer about it, should the lineart be 100% solid or should it have blending like yours do. I will really appreciate some of your insight on the matter if possible.
@DavidRevoy8 жыл бұрын
Lio Local Chibi Thief Hey, good to see it's going better. About the line-art, there is no rules. On my last episode of Pepper&Carrot, I tried a thin 8px width line max ( on a 300dpi A4 page, it's really thin ) with around 70% of transparency and 'multiply'. It was really , really hard to correctly paint 'inside' the zone, and for sure opaque line-art in black are way way easier. Large line width too. But I really wanted the thin line width style. So, no rules, it only depends the result you want.

Hey David, your tutorials are really great and especially helpful for someone like me who is just beginning to draw with krita. Big ups for your work! Also I have a question: What is your setup in krita when your using reference images for your drawing?
@DavidRevoy8 жыл бұрын
+SonKomischerTyp : Hey, thanks! I rarely work with references. I like to watch a lot of pictures and do documentation, but I don't need them sticky next to me while painting. This way, I learnt how to train more my memories of proportions, vocabulary of shapes , material, light , etc... ( but I still like to spend a lot of time watching and gathering documentation ) . When I need to ; (eg. doing a freelance work with the need to follow an art direction with many ref , a movie or video game with already works from other artist done ) I open a big Inkscape document, and I embed all the image inside the *.SVG vector file. This way , I do a wall of ref , I can zoom, resize , arrange, rotate, mirror and keep in a single file. I'll probably try to do a video about it later. Thanks for following the channel!
@Simrasil_8 жыл бұрын
+David Revoy Thank you for the detailed answer! I will try to learn drawing more without direct reference, but as I'm just learning it's alot easier for me to have a guideline when drawing. I can see the benefit of memorizing shapes and proportions though.

+David Revoy merci, and if I deleted a default brush from where I get it back please ?
@DavidRevoy8 жыл бұрын
This is a bit more complex: (menu) Settings > Manage resources > Open Resource Folder. The files kis_paintoppresets.blacklist should list all 'deleted' brush ( they are not deleted, just blacklisted ). You can edit or delete this files to untrash all. Krita regenerate this file.

Do you still use the stabilizer? What delay do you advise me for xp pen artist pro 16tp?
@DavidRevoy Жыл бұрын
Hi! Yes, I still use it (without the 'delay' option, with finish line and with stabilise sensor; sample count around 40 here). Hard to tell for your 16inch Artist Pro. I guess it has 1920x1080p or maybe higher pixel density... Imo, you should just try starting at 120, and then try to make quick circles, small circles; if you feel it too strong the circle will not look good, then you go -20 by -20 until you don't feel the stabilization being in your way. Then you test some curvy long hair type of S line. And adjusting this way, you'll find your ideal setting. Good luck.

Wow, you are so talented! I love FOSS and you inspired me to try to use Alchemy many years back. I even created an ebuild for Gentoo so you could install it via the package management system. I used MyPaint together with Alchemy, I think that is also what you did if I remember correctly. I've been reading some news about Krita but I've never tried it. I'm just a beginner when it comes to drawing (I liked to do it in my teens, many moons ago), but it's fun to use a Wacom. I think I saw that you use both MyPaint and Krita, what makes you switch? Are they for different kinds of drawings, or is it just to get some variation?
@DavidRevoy8 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for the feedback! (and also for contributing to packaging ) . You are right , I started my digital painting workflow on FOSS with Alchemy+Mypaint+Gimp around 2009. They are really cool project, and at this time Krita wasn't able to draw on a 1000x1000 pixel canvas without horrible lag. But with time and a lot of work from many Krita developpers/kickstarter/big bug report campaign/many Google Summer of code/ well... almost 6 years of development ; Krita became better and better as a 'all in one' digital painting software, with many option for professionals (color management, export format, etc...) . I switched somewhere around 2012 to fulltime Krita. Krita is still a bit 'heavy-weight' and needs a solid computer to benefit fully about it; but exept this ; it's a fantastic tools. That's my core tool for www.peppercarrot.com/ . Without Krita, not sure I would ever start my own open project.

Cool, thank you for the information! I'll definitely install Krita and try it out for art in my game development.

Thank you so much for this David :), I have one question for you, what is the name of the Linux distro that you used in the video? :)
@DavidRevoy8 жыл бұрын
+Carlos Suarez : Hey, I use Linux Mint 17.3 on the video ( I post on my blog often methods about installing tools, etc ; here: www.davidrevoy.com/categorie13/geek ) It's the Cinnamon D.E. with customisation of theme ( the theme is named 'gnome' ). I just put the panel on the top, with the clock centered as in the Gnome desktop design. The windows theme, Numix-frost or Numix-Arch-Blue ( a derivation of numix in blue ). The icons are the built-in 'Aqua' color. A setup really simple to reproduce, I have it on all my machine at home.

By the way, are you using the stabilizer option both when sketching and when doing the line-art, or only for the latter?
@DavidRevoy8 жыл бұрын
+Jonathan Walsh : I was used in the past to switch often between: - No stabilizer ( Basic Smoothing) : when sketching / painting - Stabilizer : for line-art. Nowaday, I prefer to use a low stabilizer almost for all. To find a good setting when I change hardware ( tablet size/ screen size, etc ) , I often start with a big Stabilizer value ( around 150 or even 200) then I try to draw small square on canvas ; if it fails I reduce progressively 10 by 10 the slider, when I have a value that is not 'on my way' and I can draw with it ; it's the right one. That's my way to find a good stabilizer for almost all possible task I'm doing with Krita.

Pour protéger le vol d'idées, aucune idée. Je suppose que le fait de poster le dessin/les pages sur un site public horodaté ( genre , sur deviant Art ) assure déjà la preuve en cas de litige d'une date de la paternité de l'idée.

hi David what tablet do you use to draw on? a surface pro, Wacom, or, intuous?
@DavidRevoy8 жыл бұрын
Hey @Abc 123; For this video , it was on a Wacom Intuos3 Large.
@Abc-qs8ir8 жыл бұрын
Gosh you must have excellent hand eye coordination, Have you ever tried drawing on a Surface Pro 3 or 4, or a Wacom Cintiq or a Ugee tablet (Ugee tablet can be gotten up to 22" and are about 300 to 600usd :)
@Abc-qs8ir8 жыл бұрын
Surface Pro 3 are just 300usd second hand :)
@DavidRevoy8 жыл бұрын
Yes, I had Cintiq 12wx ( sold back, I didn't like the dark screen ) , the Cintiq21UX ( used as a second monitor 99% of time, because too heavy and to big on desk ) , the Cintiq 22HD ( sold back because too big and pixels+parralax too big )... Only recently I ran test on the Cintiq13HD ( since first January, still early test ) but I really like it. Mainly because on Linux I managed to script something to also use it as a normal tablet mapped on my screen. But yes, I have more than 15 year of painting daily on normal table, so my coordination is OK. The problems in non-wacom is you'll run in software issue, non maintained or non existant drivers, update breaking them...etc... I heard Huion on Windows are doing great compare to other brand. Ugee, not a lot. If you purchase a surfacePro type of hardware, you'll probably run a hardware with low performance. Krita needs 2,5Ghzx2 core+4GB of Ram and a Graphic Card to start drawing. Low performance will limit you to draw with lags, and small resolution not for print , without a lot of layers. That's something to consider.
@Abc-qs8ir8 жыл бұрын
Thanks a million for the response David, You really have a unique style for line art and colour depth :) You should do graphic novels :)! If I was looking at purchasing either a Wacom 13" HD touchscreen cintiq or a Surface Pro 3, Which would be best for professional art? :) How do you find the 1/2 cm gap between the Wacom Cintiq glass and screen? And that Wacom find it difficult to register the Pen near the edges of the cintiq screen? Is it still more workable that a Surface Pro 3? :)

@DavidRevoy8 жыл бұрын
+Baylee Weeks : A Wacom Intuos 3 A4 , you can see it at 1:56 , I use it with a 1080p 21inch Philips monitor ( I prefer smaller monitor with higher density , to get the movement on the tablet the most near to 1:1 the movement on the screen. )
